The Blind Side

Yes, I'm definitely going to see a LOT of movies these days. I saw "The Blind Side" with two girlfriends on Monday, the day before "Avatar." It was a really inspiring feel-good movie, but I hadn't gotten around to writing a post about it before I saw Avatar, which knocked my socks off.

The Blind Side received a 70% freshness rating from Rotten Tomatoes. (As usual, the link takes you to the reviews over there. I like to give people a chance to see what all the positive and negative reviews have to say.) The film is another one of those movies that made me smile when I walked out of it, which is one of the things I hope for, rather than all down and depressed, like I felt after "Up In the Air," which is a fabulous movie, but I know way too many people who have been displaced and ruined in this economy for me to appreciate how good the movie actually is.

The story of Michael Oher, an NSF football player, is a true story, based partly on a book named "The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game" by Michael Lewis. The book is mostly about football and only partly about Oher, but the movie is completely about Michael Oher and how he was rescued from his impoverished childhood by Leigh Ann Tuohy, the wealthy mother who ends up adopting him. The actor who plays Oher was an unknown before this movie and does a great job. Leigh Ann is played by Sandra Bullock. Michael Medved gave The Blind Side four stars out of four, calling the film "funny, touching, [and] enormously satisfying." Medved added that, "Sandra Bullock's Oscar worthy performance is without question the best work of her career."

Not being much of a Sandra Bullock fan, I can't speak to that comment, but I do have to say if you want to see how a high-class Southern Christian mother became involved with this unlikely young man, and the wonderful things that came from her efforts, this is a movie you will enjoy.  Next week we are going to see another movie, not sure right now which one, but I'll definitely give you a review!

  3. I want to see this one too, but will probably wait until the DVD comes out..we usually just go to the theatre for the ones that must be seen on a big screen or for the 3-D ones.
    Avatar was FABULOUS...I loved it!

  4. Thanks for the review. This hadn't been on my list, but now I think i should be. We went to see "It's Complicated" today and really enjoyed it. It is such a pleasure to see a smart, sexy, woman with wrinkles. Yay! I love Meryl Streep! And Alex wasn't too shabby, either. It was a movie about real people. We left with a smile.

  5. I'm looking forward to seeing "Blind Side." I do like Sandra Bullock and saw an interview with the young man playing Oher. I was favorably impressed.

Hubby saw "Blind Side" while I was under the influence of the blue pill while getting an abscessed root canal reworked at the endodontist. lol

  6. It's on my list. I've heard nothing but good. And I am a Sandra Bullock fan. I find her movies, though not necessarily oscar winners, are clean, fun, and feel-good.

  7. While the storyline on this one is really good I'll probably wait for the dvd and a day when I have nothing better to do to see it. Having met Sandra unfortunately I am now even less of a fan so this one is not high on my list.

  8. I am so envious of all the movies you get to see! A movie night turns into a $100 evening when you add in the babysitter :) Fortunately my mother is a journalist and the paper's movie reviewer gets all the new movies sent to him on DVD, and he lends them out to the staff. So if I'm lucky I get to go to her house to watch them on her big flat screen! For free!

  9. I thought "movies" would have died and been gone by now but the likes of the DVD seems to keep them afloat. I would think that movies would be a critical investment these days but AVATAR proved that wrong.

  10. It's very nice to read your reviews and hear your opinions D-Jan. I had not heard of this film but the bit about the high class Southern Christian mother is intriguing. I know a little about southern culture now and would find that part of the film absorbing. The football? no, I'd not like that.
    Blessings, Star

  11. Argh, this one doesn't even have a release date yet for SPain! Although I'm not overly fond of Sandra Bullock, and no football (american) fan, I am very curious about a film that would get Sandy an oscar over Meryl Streep... Will definitely be keeping my eyes open for this one!
