Becoming proficient at yoga

Yoga props and challenge sheet
I think one of the best parts about having a blog is being able to go back in time and see when I started different activities. It will be three years in January since I started attending yoga classes at Yoga Northwest. It's not the first time I have gotten involved with yoga, but getting older and stiff and unable to bend and twist in ways I did without thinking in my youth, well, it was time to return.

I started out with what they call "gentle" yoga, meaning that there would be no inverted postures and the class would be geared to those of us older folks. Iyengar Yoga makes plenty of use of props, like blocks and bolsters and blankets. So when I decided I needed to start a home practice, I went to Amazon and got everything online.

Plenty of time went by with the stuff just gathering dust, but I did move from taking one class a week to two, and then this year the studio organizers decided to make a "100 Day Challenge," to celebrate B.K.S. Iyengar's 100th birthday in December (he died at 95, but his birthday will  be a good excuse for parties all around the world). I decided to try to do it, having moved up to harder poses.

It started on September 5th, and I've managed so far to do at least fifteen minutes of yoga every day, and now I make plenty use of those props. Once the weather is too cold for the front porch, I'll move into the living room, but I am amazed that I've made it this far without missing a day! Wish me luck.

  1. Yoga seems quite popular here. There are a good many gyms set aside for it, and during the warm weather, there's a weekly lunch hour session of it on the lawn at Parliament Hill.

  2. You have reminded me (yet again) that I really, really need to go back to yoga. I will wish you luck, but with your determination I doubt it is needed.

  3. I have no doubt that you will complete the challenge!

  4. I have never tried yoga, but I am diligently spending nearly an hour on my physical therapy exercises each day. Since Sept 21st I am on a new plan, to try to fix myself. An MRI next Saturday will tell my Dr, PT and me if we are doing the right stuff. Good luck to you and me!

  5. Yes keep active. You are an excellent example of what people should do...particularly elder people!

  6. My son really believed in it and bought me lessons to introduce the skill to me. However, it was too expensive to continue so I had to give it up. A lot of people are trying it out here, but I'm afraid I haven't done it. Good for you for doing this.

I just read Linda Reeder's comment. She and I are almost in the same boat. Just saw my orthopedic surgeon today and I'm supposed to start up my PT again soon.

  8. I'm personally not into yoga, but I think I'm going to take up tai jai (or however it's spelled) in retirement. :)

  9. That’s a great goal and long enough to become a habit as well. You can do it!

  10. Greetings from Estonia! Maybe it's interesting for you that I am also doing this yoga-challenge (with you, after reading your blog about this) from September 5th and also without missing a day :)

  11. I'm trying yoga again but at home. I have an older DVD of Lilias Folan that I ordered in the from PBS while her programs were playing years ago. Still good. Keep up the good work.

  13. Wow! After 100 days you will probably not want to give up those 15 minutes every day. Kudos! :)

  14. I think Yoga is a great way to stay in shape and agile. Years ago I took it faithfully, but now I do only the combination Yoga and Aerobics offered 'free' through the emeritus program for Seniors at the local college. It's a good program - with 'free' being the key word. Congrats on your home program!

  15. Dear DJan, congratulations and lots of luck! I suspect that you're not going to need luck, however, but you seem highly motivated, and when that happens for you, I've seen from your blog throughout the years that you forge ahead and achieve your goals. Peace.

  17. You go girl. I really need to find a yoga class-gentle-to see if I can work on my flexibility and balance. You do inspire us. Thanks.

  19. That's fabulous DJan! I did yoga for a few years when I lived in Belgium, and really enjoyed it. I've considered trying again every once in a while, when people I know bring it up and say how much they enjoy it. I realize they're usually doing a more "real" course than I probably did (40 university students in a gym... definitely no names of poses or anything, more like a stretching session, but was still good!). Time and money remain the factor... signing up for something like that here in Alicante is crazy expensive if you want to do it properly (as in not part of a gym membership where the instructors are usually barely trained themselves). Some day! First I need to make up my mind between Yoga and Pilates, then find the time! ;)
