Corn on the cob |
Many of us enjoy corn on the cob during the summer, especially now when it is fresh out of the garden. A couple of days ago my friend John gave me a bonanza of it from his garden, and I shared it with my neighbors and then came home with the rest.
I am not a huge fan of corn at any time, but this way is probably my favorite way to eat it. As SG and I sat down to dinner to enjoy our lovely feast, we noticed immediately that we don't eat it the same way at all! I like to start from the middle, eat a nice little section around, and then start eating the rest from right to left, on one side only, then the other.
He, on the other hand, eats it like it is a typewriter, starting on the right end and eating the entire row, does a carriage return and goes to the top and eats the next row, right to left.
Well, this morning it was the topic of conversation at the coffee shop. It turns out that all my buddies are typewriter eaters, sometimes left to right, other times right to left. I have never eaten an ear of corn that way. I think the best corn is in the middle of the ear, and so I get that and then eat the rest in an orderly fashion. I don't always finish an entire ear.
I got online and found this interesting article from the LA Times, titled "Kernels of Truth Come Out When You Eat Corn." So I decided to find out what my readers do. Nowhere have I found anybody who eats it like I do. What about you?
:-)
Haha. I avoid eating corn on the cob because it gets lodged between my teeth. Give me plain kernels, please. No cob.
ReplyDeleteI usually eat it left to right, a few rows at a time, but I turn it around, depending on where the butter has dripped and how the cob has laid in the dish. I have corn dishes for each ear.
ReplyDeletehmmmm. it's been so long since i've had corn on the cob... i think i start a 'belt' in the middle and work out from there. not sure...
ReplyDeleteNot my favourite way to eat it. Like gigihawaii it gets stuck in my teeth. From memory, I eat around the middle - and usually stop.
ReplyDeleteTypewriter....
ReplyDelete:)
Typewriter here too. Interesting survey. The corn looks delicious!
ReplyDeleteI tend to cut my corn off the cob, since I don't like to have it stuck between my teeth. I've not eaten any corn all summer long, other than frozen....oh dear.
ReplyDeleteLooks delicious !

What a topic! Who'd have ever thought that there were different ways to eat a cob of corn. I'm eating corn from my garden and it's the best.
ReplyDeleteThe survey is in, we both are typewrites left to right and repeat until we are done...with corn juice dripping down our chins:) Chance does it your way...he loves corn on the cob:)
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to say I'm very haphazard in the way I eat corn of the cob. And when I'm done, the cob looks like a very disorganized person ate it. Art, on the other hand eats his so carefully that the cob looks clean at the end. Hmmmm... Now I'm feeling like having some corn on the cob, but I haven't had very good ones in Hawaii.
ReplyDeleteWe are both typewriter corn eaters. I actually like the delicate kernels on the top end the best and I start there, which I hold to the left.
ReplyDeleteOnly way I like corn is popcorn, and corn chowder. However, when I used to eat it on the cob, it was left to right, typewriter-wise. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I love sweet corn. Just plain, no butter, no salt. After I steam it in my microwave, I cut it off the cob before eating. Soon good.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, I ate it going round and round, just like you. My dentist tells me that our front teeth are for smiling and talking not eating; that is what convinced me to change my corn eating ways.
Well aren't you unique! Typewriter here, but I do love it.
ReplyDeleteMiddle, always.
ReplyDeleteTypewriter style, of course. I've never seen anyone eat from the middle out to the sides, but I have seen haphazard style where people take out bites willy-nilly--LOL! Had a dog once who held the corn cob down with both feet and started in the middle and rolled the cob slowly while delicately biting off the kernels. Doesn't matter how anyone eats it, good old fashioned (not genetically altered) corn from the garden is delicious! ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm a typewriter style corn eater. You know the funny thing - the young generation probably doesn't know what "typewriter style" is.
ReplyDeleteWe both love corn, esp. on the cob. I'm a typewriter. B is not. You see, opposites attract!
ReplyDeleteI would have to stop eating to watch you. You are an original in my experience. Left to right typewriter here. Just had some yesterday though not fresh picked like yours.
ReplyDeleteHmmmm, I'm trying to think...I know I don't eat it your way so I either eat it haphazardly or like a typewriter - I'll have to make a mental note next time we have corn.
ReplyDeleteAs a side note, my husband has recently started grilling the corn - OH MY, I don't think I'll ever be able to eat corn on the cob any other way....so, so good!
DH and I love fresh corn on the cob. Actually it's the only way I like corn... except maybe in corn bread. And we eat it almost every week when it's available. We don't eat a lot... actually share a cob usually. But as to how we eat it, I don't know. Probably haphazardly? And I like the corn that has mixed white and yellow kernels best.
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I always think of my mother when I see corn on the cob. She could never turn away from a hot/steamy/heavily buttered cob. I have a picture of her from long ago with butter oozing from her mouth and going down her chin, she loved it that much!!
ReplyDeleteOkay, so now you ask....how do we eat fresh corn? I'd prefer to CUT the kernels from the cob onto my plate and slather butter on it. No salt, no pepper...just sweet corn. I don't like to have the kernel 'papery' stuff stuck between my teeth. LOL ....Ya, I know. I'm weird.
This proves how boring I am. Left to right always. I need a life....:)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a typewriter corn on the cob eater - left to right. I haven't had any yet this summer. I love watching little kids eat corn on the cob!
ReplyDeleteLeft to right. But sometimes instead of a carriage return I eat my way back, right to left.
