Independence Day 2017

Bridge over dried stream
Fifteen of the regular Saturday walkers, all ladies, joined our leader this morning for a special Fourth of July walk, heading out to the Chuckanuts and onto the Interurban Trail. It was a very fine 7-mile walk before going back to the Village Green and sitting in the sunshine to drink coffee together. In the shade it was a bit cool, but in the sun it was bordering on hot. Right now, at almost 1:00pm, it's 69°F with a light breeze. If you ask me, it could hardly be more perfect weather.

Now I'm home with no plans for the rest of the day, except to enjoy a nice light salad for dinner later on, with the requisite wine of course, and then trying to deal with the sound of the fireworks this evening. I can see the ones in Bellingham Bay from my back porch, if I want to see them as well as hear them. Although they are not supposed to be firing off those screamers and boomers inside the city limits, it doesn't seem to matter to the enthusiasts. I just hope nobody gets hurt this year.

My friend Ronni got the results from the pathology from the Whipple procedure she had done: the margins were clear around the diseased part of the pancreas they removed, no sign of it spreading in the surrounding tissues, but two of seventeen lymph nodes that were removed were positive for cancer cells. She's trying to deal with it and figure out her next options, while she recovers from that massive surgery. I just wish there were something I could do, other than commiserate and hope for the best. She's blogging about it all over at Time Goes By.

My raspberries are abundant and needing to be picked every day now. I was glad to find that a cup of raspberries only has around 70 calories. I've been eating quite a few while I'm picking. Every once in awhile I'll find one a little overripe, and the sweetness just melts in my mouth. Yum! I'll be spending some more time today out there weeding and enjoying my garden. And thinking about my country's Independence Day. I hope you have a great day!

  1. We had a fun morning with friends at a picnic brunch along the route of the Normandy Park Parade. Our kids were in the parade and then we met up with them at The Cove for some ice cream, visiting, and a stroll out to the beach. We are back home now. I put some patriotic music on the sound system. We'll rest and putter and water some plants and I'll pick a new bouquet of roses for the kitchen table About 4:00 we'll drive south to Gig Harbor for our evening festivities. I do love the 4th of July, seeing all the folks in red, white, and blue, and all of the flags, and people having fun. So many of us enjoy such wonderful and precious freedom. I hope the rest of your day is just what you want it to be.

And wishing you a happy remainder to the day. Mmmm raspberries. I am a fan of all berries, but they are my favourites I think.

  5. I'd say a seven mile walk on July fourth is a good way to celebrate.

  9. 69 degrees is a bit cold for me here in Hawaii. Time for a sweater.

  10. Sounds like a great way to spend the day. I got to hear my neighbors celebrate which distressed Callie a lot. She doesn't like loud noises at all. Not sure how they managed since we got 5 inches of rain. That is determination.

  11. We have three huge patches of raspberries. I love them. But picking, not so much. It can be overwhelming. We've been eating them for breakfast and dessert. Unfortunately, when I'm through doctoring them, they have more than 70 calories. But I do love them naked too, warm right off the vine. Thanks for letting me know you liked my book cover! And your last comment was sweet over at my travel blog too.

  12. Sitting in the sun..a bit hot! Sorry, I had to literally laugh out loud on that one. You don't know what hot is. Okay, so it's hot in Washington, then it's boiling in So. Texas.

Pretty photo of the Bridge over NO Water [couldn't say 'troubled']

Hope you had a good holiday dear one.
