Summertime

Front porch flowers
Yesterday was the first full day of summer here in the Northern Hemisphere. That means that one of my favorite blogging friends who lives in Canberra is experiencing her first full day of winter. It is very curious to me to realize that our beautiful planet has such lovely seasons, and that they are opposite on either side of the equator.

We still haven't had any real heat, but that will be coming in future weeks and months: our warmest days are usually in August, and even then it's usually not all that hot for long. My front porch faces east, and the bright sunlight poured in this morning. At this time of the year I get full shade on the porch from noon on. It makes for such a pleasant place to hang out when the lawn mowers and leaf blowers are quiet.

The long-term forecast for the summer is for the US to be warmer than normal. But that's an  increasing trend as the global climate warms. I just saw on the news that it's even warm right now in Russia:
A heat wave in Russia on Saturday sent temperatures in the Siberian town of Verkhoyansk soaring to 38°Celsius (104 Fahrenheit). Meteorologists say that would be the highest number ever recorded north of the Arctic Circle. (from VoA)
Yikes! And it's just now summer. Hopefully it's an anomaly and it will cool down a little once the heat wave breaks. The entire article is fascinating (linked above). I will be spending my days on my shady front porch admiring my petunias and giving thanks that I'm not in blistering hot Siberia!
:-)

  1. It has been very hot and humid here. We are presently experiencing a storm. I am not sure how long it will last. The heat wave will not break until Wednesday, apparently.

  2. Thank you. You are right - we are in winter (yay) though we mark the start of winter as the 1st of June.
That article was frightening. I do hope that it is an aberration rather than a portent of what is to come.
Your shady porch sounds blissful (and I am very fond of petunias too).

  3. Here in the UK they are forecasting hot weather for this week, up to about 32 C in some areas …
    Love your porch flowers.

    All the best Jan

  4. How nice to sit on your porch and enjoy those flowers, and in the cool of the day, no less.

  6. We move around the house away from the sun these days as it’s hot and humid. A bit of shade is essential as it a breeze.

  7. The sky was incredibly blue this morning. Now at almost 5:00 it is 81, but sitting in the shade of the umbrella on the patio it was just perfect.
With housework and laundry accomplished this afternoon I did a little gardening in the shade this afternoon before settling down to read. Things are happening medically and I'll be posting about that in the near future. Since we can't really do much anyway this summer, I might as well be stuck at home recovering.

  8. I don't like heat and we don't get much. So enjoy your view to the east with afternoon shade.

  9. I am spoiled with our air conditioners - though I really don't need it all the time. Weather in Hawaii is quite nice because we have trade winds blowing. It will get hotter as the summer progresses and I have to water the plants sometimes twice a day, but I love it.

  12. I remember when we went to New Zealand in spring only to find they were having Autumn. That was such a weird feeling. Their leaves were changing colors and apples were in season. I hope it will be cooler for all of us because wearing a mask could be a bit more uncomfortable when it’s hot. (I’m sorry I had to delete that previous comment. I got distracted and my sentence was really weird.)

  15. So glad you have a shady porch to relax on. We have talked about extending the small doorway front porch across the front of our house (the area is covered and we could add a ceiling fan) so that we could sit out there in the evenings. It faces east. This way when we're really old (only 75 in July) and can't walk the neighborhood anymore, we could sit out there and watch others walk...

  16. That's funny about the soaring heat in Siberia. Wonder what the winter is like over there.

  17. I saw that about the hundred degrees in Siberia. Yikes, sure hope that isn't a sign of things to come. Colder than Siberia has been a saying for years.

  22. We have such beautiful weather in the PacNW. Moderate, even in summertime. Those are lovely petunias; I have some too, although different colors. I have a weakness for the multi-colored ones.

  23. Yes temps are warmer but though UK London area currently has a heat wave if 31 here in My area for the second year we are having cooler temps all spring and now summer too. We usually have high humid weather but not currently. Really unusual. It does make going on walks pleasant.
We have potted herbs and tomatoes growing, might see some harvest by late July. I miss hearing from you as my blog is rare now but I try to keep up visiting you when eyes can manage.. Dee has stopped Asher eyes got top weak and I fear it may happen to me too. Buddy is doing fine but misses travelling and hubby”
K’s med seem to have made me Ort issues a bit more manageable so his moods are more up. Life in lockdown has been a lot of movies and games . Stay safe and keep well .
