Farewell dear friend

Rob decapitating the cake
Sunday we had a goodbye party for Rob, who is moving out of the complex by the end of the month. Our friends Hedi and Dan hosted a really nice gathering for him at their place. Hedi bought this lovely cake, and here is Rob getting ready to cut it into pieces for everyone to enjoy.

Frankly, as much as I enjoyed the cake, I'm finding that I can no longer eat that sort of food without paying a very high price for it. I had an upset stomach all the rest of the night and into the morning. Now that I'm back to eating healthy food, I'm feeling much better. And I had a great yoga class this afternoon and that was all I needed to put myself back into the plus column. The older I get, the more I find that indiscretions like rich cake or too much wine leave me wishing I'd been more circumspect.

I just saw the long-term weather and discovered that winter is not over yet, not by a long shot. By the end of the month, almost everybody in the US (except my sister in Florida) will be in the deep freeze. I read about an Amtrak train from Seattle to Los Angeles that was stopped by deep snow and a fallen tree on the tracks. Here's the whole story, if you're interested. It started out on Sunday morning and was stuck for 37 hours, with 183 passengers and crew on board. Since the nearest town was without power, they were forced to stay on board the whole time. It sounds like it wasn't too bad, since they had power and food.
Some passengers took to social media, posting pictures and video of their fellow passengers passing the time by playing cards, talking or sleeping wherever they could find space. “We have accepted our new life on the train,” a Twitter user identified as Tracy27 posted on Monday night. “Tribes are forming.”
I wonder if there will be any babies born in nine months. It could happen!
:-)

  1. You're right that winter isn't over. It was minus 33 C here last night. There is moderation this week but not much. We'll just have to tough it out.

  2. It's cold here tonight. Winter isn't done yet.

Fortunately you were able to get together and wish your friend well.

  3. Sounds like he will be missed. Nice that he got a farewell party. :)
I just heard about the train today. Wouldn't be bad with food and electricity and heat, but I heard students professors at college didn't believe their excuse why they weren't in school. And people were missing work, etc. But it will all sort out eventually and people took it well.
It's -1 degrees right now in Fargo. We are far from spring and don't expect it to start showing up till April or May, regardless. Stay warm...and don't eat any more cake--LOL! ;)

  4. I read about the train and how people gathered together to make the best of the situation. Rather heartwarming in today's world.

Sorry your friend is leaving. I know what you mean about adding a host of sugars into your diet. Messes me up as well. As does the wine, although I hate to have the be true.

    Good luck to your friend!

  7. I heard that story and wondered how bad the bathrooms smelled after that long. I have been on a delayed train and after just a few hours past their convience stop and they smell but that was years ago so maybe they are better now. So idiots here got stuck out on the big lakes...one had a four month old baby...that Mom had no business out on the ice in a blizzard. I bet you will miss your friend but perhaps your new neighbor will be fabulous:)

  8. As I, apparently live under a rock, hadn't heard this story. How nice that everyone took it stride - that usually doesn't happen. Thanks for sharing.

I know your friend will be missed but I suspect we will soon hear about a new friend in your new neighbor.

  9. That looks like a Chantilly Cake which my granddaughter requested from Whole Foods for her recent 16th birthday. Unfortunately, if I overindulge in food, I pay for it by feeling very sluggish and not being able to sleep. I hadn't heard about the train. I was on Amtrak for a day, and it was enough for me...

  10. I shouldn't but I do like to eat food like that cake. I do use more moderation than I used to, wee, usually.
We heard about that train, of course. I guess they finally returned to Seattle, which was not where they were heading.

  11. It's always sad when good friends move away! Wha a nice gesture, though, with the cake and party!

  12. Yeah, I read about that train. I am sorry you could not "stomach" that cake. Perhaps, you should have scraped off the frosting before eating it.

  13. I must still be young! I could eat ice cream, cake and cookies all day long, no problem. (I could, but B won't let me.) I do find, like you, I can no longer handle alcohol, and spicy foods give me a hard time. So it's lots of chicken and fish and broccoli. But key lime pie ... that's a fruit, right?

  14. I don't know where the cake came from, but I cannot eat any bakery product from Costco b/c their bakeries use a preservative in their flour. Lots of bakeries do this. The preservative makes me very sick.

  15. I find that as I grow older, I'm healing more slowly and digesting differently too. I do feel better when I eat more healthily, but every so often I can't help but indulge. Sigh...
