A soaker of a Saturday

Beautiful pink and wet flowers
This morning fifteen ladies walked around five miles or so in, you guessed it, rain. After an entire week of wonderful sunshine, we returned to our usual springtime condition. And of course it was just as the weekend began, with rain forecasted right up to Monday. We set a temperature record here on Thursday, and then yesterday it began to cool down, and today is giving us a fair amount of rain.

Last week after the visit to the retina specialist, I had gone to the optical shop and bought myself a pair of fancy sunglasses and some over-the-glasses type sunglasses that I knew I would wear, instead of the rather geeky ones I received from the cataract surgeon's office. I also bought myself a couple of cool wide-brimmed hats. I must say that my eyes were a whole lot less tired after being in the strong sunlight using these techniques. Hopefully I'll be able to slow down the inexorable progression of the AMD.

In any event, it was sure nice to leave all the sunscreen, sun hats, and sunglasses behind as I joined the ladies this morning. I did need a rain hat and raincoat, but I know how to do that without any effort.

  3. Having inherited migraines from the paternal side (then known as "sick headaches" I learned as a teenager the wisdom of sunglasses and broad brimmed hats. It's stood me in good stead ever since. And rainy days work fine too...:)

  6. I have got to get serious about sunglasses and hats. I'm terrible. I don't wear them.

  7. We were out garden touring in north Seattle this morning, and it rained ever so lightly, not spoiling our fun at all.
I use over-my-glasses polarized clip ons because the polarization really cuts the glare. And of course, visors to keep the sun from coming over the top. Glad your new efforts are working for you.

  8. Since I had the cataract surgery and got these new ocular migraines I know sunglasses help a lot! As soon as I get that flittery feeling in my eyes on a sunny day and put on the sunglasses I can almost feel my eyes go--ahhh! And I am indoors--LOL! They usually help keep the migraine away. So, I can bet that the hat and shades will really help with the eyestrain. We will want pictures, of course. ;)

  13. I don't mind the rain too much but it does become a nuisance after a while. Pleased you have sorted out some alternative ways to ease your eye problems.

  14. Hats and sunglasses, a good combo. I finally got my favorite frames turned into sunglasses with prescription lenses and uv coating. It really was worth it.

  15. Dear DJan, because of the deterioration of my optic nerves due to the extremely high pressure back in December 2015, I have compromised vision now. That means many drops a day, but it also means always--always--wearing sunglasses when I go outside on a sunny day. One of my eyes is permanently dilated and the glasses make all the difference.

I am so relieved to know that you are taking such good care of your eyes. That will make all the difference for you too. Shading your eyes with the hat is a really good idea. I haven't tried that, but now, I will. Thank you for the suggestion. Peace.

  16. Because of you, I too have become aware of the damaging effect of the sun on my eyes. I must remember to use my dark glasses every time I step outside.

  17. I always wear a hat and my optometrist told me I still need to wear glasses to shield my eyes from reflected UV rays. Now, I just have to make a conscious effort to remember.
