Then my friend Judy and I headed over to the Pickford to see Phantom Thread, which has been nominated for several awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Daniel Day-Lewis. We left the theater a little confused by the story line, which is best understood by the rating difference between the critics and the audience on Rotten Tomatoes (92% for the critics and 70% for the audience). Apparently this is typical for the director, Paul Thomas Anderson, judging from the reviews I read. In any event, the movie is beautiful, and although the story line is a little... strange, it was the performances by Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps that made the movie for me. If you saw it, please let me know what you think.
Only a few more movies before I'll have seen all the Oscar-nominated movies. I downloaded Mudbound on my iPad so I can watch it while I'm traveling. The day after tomorrow I'll be out of the incessant rain and in Florida!
:-)
I felt similarly. I realized that he, for one reason or another (probably mommy issues) was so completely driven and unyeilding that he recognized the only way him to rest was to allow her to do what she did. Lovely to look at but perplexing at best.
ReplyDeleteYou're gonna like some warmth and sun for a while!
ReplyDeleteI’m glad you are feeling better. I’ve been wondering about that movie. I want to see it. Enjoy your trip.
ReplyDeleteThe rain again today is making me wish I could escape to Arizona or New Mexico. But I'll hang in there. We have the Northwest flower and Garden Show next week, and it will be spring in the convention center.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't get to any more movies this week. I'll have to start prioritizing my list.
I want to see that movie after reading your review.
ReplyDeleteI hope you have lots of sun, a break from the rain at least. Whatever the weather, you’ll be with your sister. All will be well regardless!
Fun to read about your movie experiences, I hope your respiratory bug is gone for good!
ReplyDeleteRain here today also, and show showers mixed in...brrr.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to read you are recovering nicely, and looking forward to your Florida trip !
Have a safe journey, and enjoy your sunshine.
Hugs,
~Jo
I am so glad you are healing up in time for your trip. That Florida vitamin D ought to seal the deal.
ReplyDeleteWith all the movies you have seen, the Oscars will be meaningful for you as you get to cheer on your favorites.
Enjoy your trip!
ReplyDeleteI know I will see the movie when it comes out on Netflix. You have seen so many of the nominees!
Stay well. Have fun! :)
I'm glad you are feeling better. I hope your travels are smooth and uneventful and I know you will enjoy your time with your sister and the warm Florida weather! Be safe and have fun!
ReplyDeleteI saw the trailer for Phantom Thread and from what I saw, it didn't appeal to me. The one I want to see is the one with Frances McD...looks good.
ReplyDeleteHave a safe trip.
Dear DJan, I seldom get to movies, but I did see the one about Ebbing, Missouri, that you recommended with Frances McDormand (is that her name?). Your review of it made me make a real effort to find someone with whom to attend. That movie was really thought-provoking.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds as if the movie you mentioned today would also provoke thought. I read that it's the male actor's final film. I doubt that I'll find anyone who'll want to go, but the wonder is that I can get all the movies that are popular from the library as DVDs once the movie is out of the theater. So I'm so lucky with this library here in Independence!
Enjoy your trip! Peace.
I do love Daniel Day Lewis. Gosh! I don't think I've seen any of the Oscar nominated movies.
