Last day in Florida

Norma Jean swimming laps
I enjoyed today's swim very much, since the intense heat is almost back to normal Florida temperatures. Which is still WAY too warm for me. I looked this morning at Bellingham's temperature, and was surprised to see that it got down to freezing level! Forty degrees cooler than the Sunshine State. Tomorrow will be a travel day, and then I'll go out on my Thursday hike in what looks to be weather a little on the cool and wet side. No problem for me.

This morning after our swim, Norma Jean realized that she couldn't find her wallet. She didn't worry too much, thinking it had been misplaced. It wasn't. She didn't lock her car last night after we returned from the movies, and it was stolen out of her console. Fortunately there was nothing else of any value except, of course, her credit cards and driver's license. When we realized that it was indeed gone, she called the security police in her retirement community and the police.

After the police arrived, other neighbors saw his squad car and came over to say that their unlocked cars had been burgled as well. Although it meant canceling her cards and spending part of the day getting a new driver's license, she had not left anything else of value inside. A nearby neighbor was not so lucky. He lost his camera, binoculars, CDs, and other stuff I can't remember right now. Everyone around here usually feels pretty safe from thieves, but no more. You can be sure that everyone around here will be locking their cars and homes after this.

We know about when it happened, because Peter's dog Zen kept going in and out the doggy door and whining around 3-3:30am, but Peter didn't think much about it. Norma Jean said that her dog also whined and woke her about that time. The dogs knew someone was out there who didn't belong.

It wasn't the way I expected to spend my last day in Florida. The kids and Allison will be here for dinner tonight, and I'm busy packing up and getting ready for my day of travel tomorrow. Other than a few wrinkles here and there, it's been a wonderful visit, if a bit on the scorcher side. This fragile wilted Pacific Northwestern senior won't be visiting in November again any time soon!

  1. That's a sad way to end your visit and unfortunately a lesson in not trusting anyone. Have a safe journey home.

  2. The buggers anyway. It is a pain to cancel everything and wait for them to be reissued. Dogs are pretty smart they can hear and smell things that we cannot.
Travel safely back to your cool home:)

  3. a loss from your vehicle is petty devastating. Vehicles are locked here . We have very little crime but lock those vehicles.

  6. It is fun to travel, and especially spend time with family, but always good to get home again. Especially when escaping Florida heat!

  7. Safe travels for you, Jan....
I'm so sorry to hear about the break in(s) in your sister's neighborhood. Maddening to me that people take things that don't belong to them.
    Sending you another hug,
    Jackie

  8. I am so sorry to hear that - and relieved it was only property. Inconvenient, distressing, but not as bad as it could be.
Travel safely. And enjoy leaving the sweaty season behind.

  9. It's getting decidedly colder here. Be ready to bundle up on your hike on Thursday.
Thievery like having your wallet stolen is so invasive, not to mention so disruptive. Not fun. On the other hand, no place is safe enough not to lock things up.

  11. So sorry you all experienced the violation and senseless greed of burglary.
Happy travels as you return home to the opposite corner of the country!

  14. A shame; but at least no one was hurt or threatened. When my son comes to visit he locks his car even when it's in our driveway -- even when it's in our garage! But then, he lives in New York City. Anyway, glad you got some swimming in, even if I'm betting you'd rather be walking.

  15. So sorry for your friend and your last day in Florida, DJan. Gates don't seem to stop the thieves even in retirement communities with gates, as people give the gate codes out. The one we lived in sent a new gate code out to all the contractors in the area each month. But who works for them????.

  16. I'm sure they'll pay attention to the dogs whining in the middle of the night next time, too. Norma Jean is lucky that is all they took, I guess. Have a safe trip home. :)

  17. Too bad about the wallet, but thank goodness the thief did not steal her house and car keys! That would have been terrible.

  18. Sorry about the thief, but even in our tiny community, we lock doors at nite - I left my car unlocked one nite about 6 years ago and the thief was very neat. He NEATLY arranged what he felt wasn't worth stealing on the passenger seat and actually I didn't have much in the car. I certainly do not leave anything of value locked anywhere in a car overnight. I have a police friend who showed me how easy it is to EASILY break into a car, unlock the dash and open the trunk without a key....so, keep valued things in the house. The items I use daily in the car are in a small back pack, which I take with me when needed and returned when not. Enjoy your last day in the heat of Florida and have a safe journey home.

  19. Oh nuts! What an awful thing to happen at the end of your trip, but as you say it's a good thing she didn't lose too much like her neighbors. We have so many robberies here in Hawaii these days that we have to lock everything up all the time.
