Partly sunny iPhone

Mt Baker from my front porch
This morning, on my walk to the bus stop in the dark, the fog and temperature in the mid-30s (1.6C) made me glad to have on my heavier coat. I realize that for some of my readers, this sounds downright balmy, as I read about schools being closed because of wind chills in the -30s. Yikes! Well, I live in the Pacific Northwest and endure (enjoy) plenty of rain in the winter months, but rather mild temperatures, for the most part. It's gotten down well below freezing now and then, but it warms up again.

Today, once the sun came out and the fog lifted, I smiled at the blue skies beginning to peek through and now, in the early afternoon, it's very pleasant out there. I just went to the library and picked up some books I had on hold, and now I can settle down in my favorite chair and get started on them.

I dropped my new iPhone 6 last Thursday, right on the gravel in the parking lot at the beginning of our hike. Although I have a phone case, the glass is exposed, and I managed to get the tiniest little chip in the glass. That did NOT make me happy, so I did a bit of research and decided to order the Tech Armor Ballistic Glass Screen Protector from Amazon. If you don't know already, one of the problems for screen protectors with the new iPhones are that their edges curve downwards. This makes it difficult for screen protectors to fit all the way to the edges.

I thought I'd show you how incredibly tight the tolerances are for the screen protector. (The blue plastic on the outer edges show my Otter Box case.) After reading all the reviews, watching the installation video, and enlisting the help of Smart Guy, I attempted to get it onto my screen. This took some doing, but it wasn't terribly awful. There are no bubbles or other annoying things in the viewing area, but on the right-hand side you can see that there is an area of lighter coloring, which shows that the screen protector is not sealed completely on that side. The reason for that is evident, if you study the picture carefully: on the bottom lower left you can see that I didn't get it exactly right; there is just the tiniest bit of difference between the placement on the left and right sides.

The good part is that it is easy to use the touch screen, no difference really with and without the screen protector. But one of the reasons that people didn't give this protector the highest rating is that it began to peel away after a few months. I suspect this one will do the same. But it's SO MUCH BETTER than walking around with a naked screen with someone as klutzy as me.

Does anybody have a recommendation for either a screen protector or cover that is better than this? If so, I might just go ahead and order it. I love my iPhone and want to give it the best care I can.

  5. I worry about accidents with my ipad. I should look into some protection for the screen. It seems that no matter where people are they can complain about the weather.

  6. My daughter something on her screen that supposedly protects it against anything short of a nuclear blast! I'll ask her.

  7. I have a sheet thing on my iPhone 5c that doesn't go all the way to the edges, just the touch part, so therefore no improvement over what you have.

  8. I just got a Samsung galaxy s5 and right away I bought the Tech Armor screen protector. It leaves a very tiny gap between the screen protector and my case. Maybe that's how they all work?

  9. I have some sort of plastic sheet covering on my iPhone that Verizon put on for me. I would never have been able to put it on myself. The Otter Box is supposed to be a good case. I don't know much about the Tech Armor screen protector. I'll have to ask my husband.

I broke my iPad mini. I shattered the screen when I dropped it. Thankfully, my husband had Applecare on it. I think with these expensive phones and such, we just have to bite the bullet and buy the protection. I got brand new device for $50 because of the Applecare. It was worth the expense.

  11. I got the fellow at the phone shop to put my screen protector on and its perfect. I tried that once and it was a nightmare. Unfortunately I did have bubbles and went back to the shop and bought another and got him to put it on. Took him like 4 seconds. I have a really nice roots cover on my phone, have dropped it and no damage. Before I purchase my new phone, I investigate the covers, cause if I'm spending that much money, I want it unbreakable, eh.

  14. DJan, I still have the iPhone 4, but I find the Otterbox a great protector as I've dropped my phone on numerous occasions and its never had a problem. But my kids have the iPhone 6 and were recently telling me about the new screen protector that I believe they said was made of some sort of glass that was very unbreakable? Hope this is true as my youngest son has smashed his screen several times... and once it went through the washing machine. He needs protection.

  15. I would recommend you go see your Apple store genius and get their recommendation. They know all the gadgets out there. Terry has a case for his that he got at the Apple store and he loves it.

  17. I smiled at your mention of schools closed due to -30 wind chills.
We shake our heads here, where we had -45 wind chills last week and no school delays or closings at all.
South in the state where it was quite a bit warmer, schools were closed. The buses have a hard time running in that cold, and if they get behind schedule, which they did, that leaves children out in those cold temps in the early morning, dangerous.
Luckily everyone is safe and sound, and we're expected to have a warm up.
I'm a phone dropper, too, and have a mid-priced case on my Galaxy called the Body Glove Shocksuit. (I see they're much lower priced now on Amazon) It has protected my phone very well in many crashes to asphalt or our slate floor. :)

  19. I have a Samsung Galaxy with a screen protector. Leah makes sure I have one right away and puts it on for me, so I know nothing about them--LOL! But I know they are supposed to help to prevent damage to the screen. I hope you find a perfect fit for yours. :)

  20. Sorry but I am clueless. I am still working with a dumb phone. Hope you find just what you need.

  21. I have a screen protector on my Samsung Galaxy 4 -- it works fine. But of course, that's on a different planet from the iPhone world. P. S. You should come East where the weather is beautiful spring, summer and fall ... and you go to Florida in the winter. (But I know there's a West Coast version of that, too, which involves Arizona if you so choose.)

  22. I seriously considering getting an iPhone6 and am wondering if it's larger size makes it more prone to being dropped. Aside from that, do you recommend it as a phone/camera.. etc?

  23. Art bought a screen protector from Amazon for my iPhone 4s, but then found that the Otter Box cover (replacement for our overpriced Lifeproof case) already came with a screen protector. Are you sure your Otter Box didn't come with a cover already?

I'm salivating over your iPhone 6, but Art is insisting on waiting a bit longer since my 4s in working perfectly fine.

  24. Accidents are scary, even for small things like phones. It can still give you a terrible feeling. It was a relief that your phone didn’t receive any damage. Also, it’s a wise move to cover it. Tthis will help to protect your phone from scratches, should it ever fall, or even from the simple wear and tear of everyday life. Cheers!

  25. I'm glad that your iPhone is still in good shape after it fell. It's true that we should always keep them protected by using different cases which are now available in almost all mobile phone stores. After all, it will also make our phones stylish! Haha! Thanks for sharing this, Djan! All the best to you!
