Sunrise Autumn 2014

Mt. Baker casting a shadow
When I walked out of the front door this morning, this amazing sight greeted me. The sun is rising directly to the east (I said west, what was I thinking?) on this date, and I figure that Mt. Baker, which is right there in that spot where the cone is, cast a shadow on the sunrise from my vantage point that would only happen today (or maybe a day or two each side of the equinox), but I've never seen anything like this on any other day. Of course, the clouds also had to be just right, too. Cool, huh?

My friend Judy asked me if I had been watching the PBS documentary on the Roosevelt dynasty (seven parts, all available on line or for purchase). I had not, but they are also On Demand for me (since I have Comcast cable), so I went over to watch the first of them this afternoon. I am hooked, and I also learned some historical facts that I didn't know. I'm looking forward to watching the next six. They don't lend themselves to binge-watching, however, so I'll take my time. Eleanor Roosevelt is one of my favorite people; I didn't know she was the daughter of Teddy Roosevelt's younger brother.

I do hope you have a good first day of fall. It's also my sister Markee's 53rd birthday. Happy birthday, sister. When did you ever get that old? Oh wait: I'm nineteen years older than that, so never mind.
:-)

  1. That's an amazing pic.. the shadow could almost be seen as a funnel cloud. I'm just confused (no suprise there) about a westerly sunrise..

  2. Ok, so was it really a sunrise, or was it a sunset? Just kidding... it was a beautiful shot, and I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.

  5. Ooops, I meant to say EAST, not west. It's really a sunrise, not a sunset. :-)

  9. What a great show for the autumnal equinox!
We recorded The Roosevelts and are watching them in the evenings as we have time. Unfortunately I keep falling asleep. I guess it's because I'm still recovering from this cold.

  13. That shadow cast against the sunrise is fantastic!
It made me think of our visit years ago to Chichen Itza.. the equinox effects and Mayan calendar.. timing of the sun.
Pretty special to look to the sky and see that. :)

  15. Happy Birthday Markee. What a truly lovely shot you had before you this morning DJan. Everything was indeed perfect,; it's one of the neatest shots I've seen - actually kinda reminds me of one of those Alien movies, when the ship's lights light up the other side of the Mountain. Cool.

  16. Beautiful photo! I take pictures of sunsets, not sunrises (if you get my drift ... I'm lazy!) We wanted to see the PBS Roosevelt series -- think it'll be repeated, or else on Netflix?

  17. What a stunning sunrise! I've never seen a mountain shadow across the sky like that.

I recorded all the Roosevelt series but I haven't started watching them yet. I hope they were all recorded well (I use an antenna...old style). Have heard a lot of positives about the program. I do love anything Ken Burns produces!

Have a marvelous day and happy birthday to your little sis. ;)

  21. That is an incredible photo! Wowwww! Art and I went through Roosevelt withdrawal when the series ended. There was so much I didn't know. What an amazing family! We loved it!

  22. Yes, it is very cool! I'm watching a series as well but it's Anne of Green Gables which I picked up in Prince Edward Island in August. History of another kind.

  23. That photo is amazing. Also the Roosevelt series as most of Ken Burn stuff was very well done. Of course my eldest son was name after TR and my father and I shared his name as well. I'm still ticked at the fact that the students voted to name their new high school in Rochester, MN after Eleanor and the school board overturned that choice and name the school "Century" The other two high schools in town are John Marshall and Mayo....

I saw the Roosevelt series just the other day while on my Roku, I'll have to go back and find it.

    Happy Birthday to your sis!
