Next to last Saturday of Summer 2014

We used to talk to each other: Gene, me, John
I asked a young man at the table behind us to take this picture. He kept smiling at us as I was explaining to John how to do things on his new tablet. The guy said it's the same thing with his mom: he had to teach her how to text so that they could talk to each other. Gene doesn't have wifi in his home, so he brings his tablet to the coffee shop to use their connection, check his email and Facebook. John wanted to know how to get onto Craigslist. He's catching on fast.
Leo and his dad
I was also very pleased to see Leo at the coffee shop; he said his dad brought him in before school and would be taking him after his breakfast (and after Robert's espresso). Leo goes to a Montessori school, and I was going to link to it, but I just discovered that Bellingham has FOUR of them. Although Leo told me the name of his school, I can't remember which one it is. Anyway, he's growing up so fast, it's wonderful to see him now and then. He'll soon be six years old!
Pricey but beautiful
After my morning walk with the ladies, I stopped by the Farmers' Market to pick up some veggies, and I saw these beautiful heirloom tomatoes calling my name. I grimaced when I priced a few of them and decided to be happy with the regular ones from my own garden. Maybe next week.

And yes, summer is quickly coming to a close. A week from Monday, September 22, marks the Autumnal Equinox, and after that day, the nights will get gradually longer than the days, until we descend into winter. But you sure wouldn't know it today: it's sunny (again!) and has already warmed into the 70s, with tomorrow forecast to be even warmer. Oh, all right, I'll take it! Happily.
:-)

  1. Reading your post, I realized how grateful I am for the internet service I get at home.
Well, summer may be almost over in Washington, but we are hot and sticky in humid Hawaii. Normally, there is a breeze to cool things off, but not this weekend. Thank goodness for a/c.

  5. Give John credit to get a tablet with no home service. Good of you to show him the ropes.
Leo is so cute. It would be hard not to tousle that hair.

  9. Leo is getting to be a big boy. I remember when you first introduced him to us and it doesn't seem that long ago. Time has flown.

We have been getting cooler nights and I'm starting to see a few years turning. I'm looking forward to cooler days after our hot summer.

To answer your question, we now have five inside cats not counting any fosters. Yes, I could be turning into a "crazy" cat lady. :)

  10. It's good to see Leo again. And yes, there you are, all you old people, with your faces glued to your screens. I have to laugh. Even at our Friday morning breakfasts now the phones come out to share photos or to Google questions that come up. I love it!

  11. South Florida's equinox is tricky. Today it's 84 after weeks upon weeks of temps at 99 and higher. A regular cold front. Ha.

  12. You're good to help others navigate technology, DJan. I am so grateful for technology since it keeps us in touch with all our loved ones.

It is HOT over here and hardly any trade winds.

$4.00 a pound for the tomatoes? Yikes! And here I thought the sugar kiss melons were expensive.

  13. I recently had a trip to my friend's cottage. I did not know that her hubby had put in wifi and so only took my ipad to read books. I am sitting there and noticed I had 5 bars for connection and asked where the signal was coming from. My surprise that Newfie Hubby got wifi installed - never thought outdoorsy guy...always busy building n sailing would even want it at the cottage. It was funny as we sat around after supper. My girlfriend simply had to show me something she had found on the internet and later we were sitting around the fire on the beach n the kids n "older folks" all had smartphones, ipads, etc. How times have changed; however; we still talked a bunch, watched the stars come out and had snacks round the fire.....then someone said "Hey Bill, go get your guitar"! I am enjoying our waning days of summer n early fall as well, right up to the end. Leo has grown and nice photo of you n buddies, Eh :)

  14. I love getting a glimpse into your life at the coffee shop with your pictures. Most of the people in my regular coffee klatch bring tablets or smartphones everyday, but there's kind of an unwritten rule that we don't use them while we're all together. One of the group always reads the news on his tablet but is usually done before the rest show up.

I love that we still are share copies of a couple of local daily papers, reading, swapping sections and discussing stories with each other. Once in a great while we use an electronic device to look something up that's being debated, or maybe to share a funny video, but those times are rare.

Did I see $4 a pound on the heirloom tomatoes? Wow! I would be satisfied with my home grown tomatoes instead too.

  18. $4.99 a pound for heirloom tomatoes? That's pretty good. Whole Foods has them for $5.99 pound.

Temps were 103 and 105 here over the weekend. Terry and I did go downtown to an art exhibit and walked about 2 miles on Saturday. It was hot.

  19. Reminds me of the local farmer's wives who bring their yummy tomatoes to the market and sell them by the bagful for 2 euro, and 1 euro when we're inundated with tons of ripe tomatoes. They taste of the sun and earth. Thanks for your little retired life vignette. Isn't it wonderful?

  20. It's quite fun to start recognizing faces in posts. That Leo is as adorable as ever. So sweet that his dad brings him in for brekkie. A good opportunity for you to seem him. Those tomatoes look yummy but yes, quite pricey. Thanks for sharing your morning.

  21. 'warmed into the 70s'....I wish!! That'd be a cold snap for us here these days. lol

In a way, I'm glad you didn't link Leo's school...that helps protect him...y'never know these days.

  22. Yes it almost over just a few hours to go. OIlove how allure sitting with tablets and they are not the youth but seniors. We now make up a huge group that the market is enjoying. And we are catching on faster now than before. I think it's so cool!
