Looking back in time

June 2018

Sometimes when it's dark and windy outside, I like to browse through old pictures in my photo library. I saw this one and it brightened my spirits, so I figured it would be just right for today. It's my front porch garden, which I plant anew every springtime. This year was especially nice, reminding me that pink petunias never fail to bring a smile to my face.

I am so glad that we are finally through the worst of the holiday snow- and windstorms. There may be more to come, but they too shall pass, just like summer's long days and winter's freezing weather. I went outdoors this morning to walk to the bus, hoping that the warm wind had melted much of the impassable sidewalks, and sure enough, it is almost all gone. Except in those places where nobody cleared their walks and people's heavy feet smashed it down. Those spots were icy but easily navigated around. By tomorrow it should mostly be gone.

Of course, there is another snow event coming to us around Thursday. Typical! Just in time for a possible hike. In any event, we did make it through the unusual deep freeze we experienced for more than a week. Other than not looking forward to the electric bill, we're doing very well indeed. It feels almost balmy out there and we are just above freezing. It's all a matter of perspective, eh?

Hope you all had a safe and lovely holiday season. Now it's time to get back to a more normal existence. Fortunately for me, I'm long retired and have no place I simply must be, thanks to Zoom yoga and some good friends who take me out to play on a regular basis.

:-)

  1. We have yet to experience really cold weather this winter but apparently it's on its way. Energy bills are horrendous here in the UK. They have tripled in a year and our due to increase again in April!

  2. It is hot here, but not yet unbearably so. This too will pass indeed.
Thank you for the very cheery garden photos. And hooray for good friends.

  3. That certainly is a photo to brighten our day. So glad you got a break and could at least get out a bit. The blessing is that you really had no place you had to be. I am grateful for that everyday. Sure feel for those still working. That must have been brutal. We are finally cold but still no snow.

  4. The flowers are a nice reminder of the change of seasons that will come again...eventually. ;)

  7. Yes, our electric bill was a whopper, and that covered only part of the really cold weather. I'm just grateful that we can afford to be warm.
Some shelves got filled today after I spend three hours getting a Covid test and then more time on a pre-procedure check in call. Tomorrow we'll back up the two Christmas trees, and then Christmas should all be put away, once we stuff it all back in the attic.

  8. We had snow overnight after a green holiday season. The temperature dropped but we are staying in as much as possible.

    Take care out there, Jan.

  9. Since you are long retired, you don't have holidays to enjoy. You're retired all the time. No special days! We are still in a deep freeze . It's minus 26 C out there right now.

  10. We are getting a snow event tomorrow. Enjoy your warm spell. Far Guy is in the hospital, doing better there than at home. He had a turn for the worse in the night and this early morning. But he is ok for now:)

  11. Retirement IS wonderful - with the freedom to choose what to do, or not do.

I do hope your cold winter is short and the worst is over. Here in Honolulu we have been drenched in rain, rain, and more rain. Grass and weeds are loving it.

  14. Very pretty!

My heat is included with rent. My hydro I pay, but my monthly rate is very reasonable.

  15. With company & all the lights on for days...yep, electric bill. Sigh.

I'm back from my blogging break and posting again. Happy 2022!

  16. I am glad that the sun has melted most of the snow. Bummers that more is on its way. Those flowers are so pretty. Soon, you will be able to plant them again.

  17. I'm glad I'm retired too because it would sure be difficult to teach during these COVID days. Sigh... I would sure love to be back to a normal existence. Fingers crossed for 2022!
