What's that wet stuff?

Our lovely Saturday morning walk
Finally! Yesterday we got a little rain, the first in ages, and then this morning, we woke to cloudy skies, and before we even began our walk at Whatcom Falls Park, it began to sprinkle. It's kept up for hours now, and it sure looks like it will keep up for most of the day. None of us minded; it's been too long since we got any rain, and it has cleared the last of the smoke out of the air. I can hear the rain still hitting our rooftop as I write this.
Teddy Bear sunflowers
Afterwards, I walked over to the Farmers' Market to take a look around, and I saw these really beautiful sunflowers, nothing like I'd ever seen before. Regular ones are in the background, but these are called "teddy bear" sunflowers.

I feel sorry for our neighbors, who are having an outdoor wedding today. It should stop raining before their hired band plays at 8:00pm tonight, but I have to say the rain will make for some fun stories for them to tell their children many years from now.

My sister Norma Jean is hunkering down in her daughter's rented house in Tampa. And now, the forecasters are saying that the hurricane has moved from the middle of the Florida coast to the west, where she is. She had to leave her mobile home because of mandatory evacuations, but now I'm worried that she has not yet reached a safe place. At least this area is not under evacuation orders. At least not yet.

  1. I will keep Norma Jean and her daughter in my prayers, together will all of the residents in Irma's path.
Isn't rain a welcoming sight after weeks of dry weather.

  2. I await Irma as well and plan to go to my SIL's. Scary stuff given the size of this hurricane. I hope Norma is safe. Rain must feel like a returning friend.

  3. My sister-in-law lives in Tampa and are staying (at this point it would be senseless to leave as they could be stuck on the road when it hits). Unfortunately, they really aren't prepared - no plywood, etc. I will keep your family in my prayers. Let's hope this one fools us all and heads back out to sea.

  6. I will add Norma Jean to those in Irma's way I am holding in my heart. I hope she and her daughter are fine.
Rain? Send some this way. Please.

  7. Oh, dear, a mobile home wouldn't be a safe place during a hurricane. I am heartbroken for those who cannot make it out of Florida for this storm.

  10. Almost no rain here, just sprinkles for a short time this afternoon.
Tampa may now be in the eye of the storm. I sure hope your family stays safe and makes it through. Property damage is a certainty.

  11. Keeping your sister, Norma, in my thoughts and prayers D J....I know just how concerned you are.

Those sunflowers, such an appropriate name for them, they DO look soft and cuddly, don't they?

  13. Am surprised by the number of brown leaves that have already fallen. Autumn is definitely on its way. I have never heard of or seen sunflowers like that. They are beautiful. Will be thinking of everyone in Florida over the next 48 hours.

  15. Sure hope Norma Jean has found a safe place. It was a surprise to the west coast on the sudden turn. I have family on both coasts and am watching the storm closely. My sister in West Palm was terrified, now not so much but my nephew in Bonita Springs is on the move. Such a nasty girl Irma is. Prayers for both our families.

  16. I've never seen those either. I can see how they get their name with their tight fluffy heads. And I see you caught some real bears below too!

  17. Hope your sister and her daughter are okay. I was in Miami for 3 days in 2013 and had a great time.
