My poor damaged car

Ouch!
This time, it wasn't my fault. I was on my way to yoga this morning, when I stopped to allow a woman and her daughter cross at a pedestrian crosswalk in a roundabout, right in front of a bus stop. Little did I know that I would be crashed into by a—wait for it—a tow truck! Here's how it happened. Take a look at the roundabout.
Roundabout on the way to Fairhaven
I was traveling on the road in the upper right-hand area and was past Wharf Street, when I saw a mother and her daughter waiting at the crosswalk as you enter Boulevard. I stopped to let her cross just at the same time a big tow truck came up Wharf Street and didn't see me. I have a very low profile in my little Honda Civic, and he was high up in the cab. When he hit me, we both pulled over into the bus pullout (just above the Boulevard lettering) and assessed the damage. He was very apologetic and we both exchanged insurance and contact information. I was able to drive the car, and all the taillights seem to be working.

Once I got home and talked to SG, we called the tow truck company, and they asked if I would be willing to deal with it privately and not involve the insurance companies. We agreed after they said they will pay for everything AND pay for me to rent a car for my trip to Vashon Island next week. The only fly in the ointment would be if they don't hold up their end of the bargain, but I think they will.

The next problem was trying to make sure the damaged fender doesn't fall off. I took it to my fisherman friend Gene, who for no reason other than he's a great guy, put screws in the front and back of the damaged fender to keep it in place until it can be fixed.

When I called to get an estimate on the damage, it will be October 11!! Work on the car won't happen until December, unless I decide to take it elsewhere. In any event, it's driveable until then, and I will get to drive a cool rental to Vashon Island for my five-day writing retreat. So all is working out just fine, I'd say.

  1. Ack. Something which definitely wasn't on your to-do list for the day.
I am very, very thankful that the only damage is to property.

  3. Fender benders are extremely aggravating. You've had a rotten day.

  4. Sorry about that, but glad it wasn't serious.

  5. Almost forgot, Mrs. FG had to have her car towed home the other day (when I was out of town of course). She's now on a first name basis with our local tow truck driver!

  6. Ouch. We don't like to have our cars hurt.
Sounds like you have worked out a good agreement.

  7. Just when you thought you were going to have a routine day, you didn't!

  8. A damaged car is not a happy car. The owner of a damaged car is not a happy car owner.
I hope things go well while you are waiting for the repairs!

  10. My advice--always call your insurance company. This was not your fault, but rather the tow-truck company's. Your insurance would work out all the details that are now being left to you. Plus, they too would get you a rental car.

  11. It all worked out well! I'm sure the tow truck company will make good on the deal. Glad you weren't hurt.

  13. Bummer about your car! But at least it is still driveable and the tow company offered to pay to fix the damage.

  14. I hope it all works out. Could have been worse, for sure, being hit by such a big vehicle! As long as you already exchanged insurance information I would think they would stick to their word. :)

  15. Ouch. So glad it was only the car hurt but sorry it will take so long to get it fixed. At least if they hold up their end, it should work out OK.

  16. Glad you are ok.
    That's very kind of you.
The tow truck driver avoids the points on his driver license, and traffics point on car insurance, and insurance premium hikes.

    1. ps...D J....I'm hoping it's just 'cause you stopped by before I finished writing the html script for my blog design. If you have time, stop by again, and see if you can read it now.

  18. Glad it was just the car. I'm sure the company will come through for you - they don't want their insurance to go up if you have to file a claim.

  20. Scary - glad you weren't pushed into the peds! Those roundabouts can be tricky. We have several in town, and you've got to really watch not only for other cars in the roundabout but also the pedestrians. Glad nobody (but the car) was hurt. I hope the company makes good on their promises. I hope you took photos at the scene.

  22. The first roundabout I ever saw was around the Eiffel Tower. We finally have a few now here in Minnesota.... I'm still afraid of them mostly not understanding how they work...:)

  23. That's a bummer. You did the right thing, and then you got hit. I have to wonder just why those big trucks are allowed on the street if they can see everything in front of them. Would they have seen the pedestrians? I hope they come through with the promises.

  24. How annoying. Hope it works out for you. I had a small bump in the car a year ago. Both of us reversed at the same time and couldn't see one another as huge hedge separated us. Both agreed it was nobody's fault just one of those things. My ins co sorted out my car straight away. His ins co have decided to pursue me through the courts for the damage to his car!!! Although my ins co will pay all legal costs plus damages if necessary. I will still have to appear in court in another part of the country. Such a waste of money.

  25. Oh my gosh! Thank goodness you're OK. When we were hit the last time they asked not to go through our insurance companies too and they paid for it privately. Luckily we have cousins who own a body shop and gave the older gentleman a good deal.
