Entertaining selfies

Not easy taking this selfie
I tried to get a picture of my poor index finger, but it wasn't easy to focus on it while holding the camera, and trying to find the button on the camera that would actually take the picture. See that red around my nail? That's the final stages of what I learned is called paronychia. Last Wednesday, almost a week ago, it started: it felt like a hangnail had gotten inflamed, but by that evening I wasn't able to sleep without taking some ibuprofen for the pain. I also hoped that the inflammation would be reduced by it as well, and it did help, I think. When I woke in the morning there was a small pustule on the right side of my nail. For the next three days, I was in pretty much constant discomfort, but after researching the problem, I found that unless it begins to get worse, it should clear up by itself, and it's definitely better.

I think I caused this by incessant hand washing after I got that cold and didn't want to give it to Smart Guy. It might have been caused by something else, I have no idea what, but now it's no longer painful except right where it is reddest, and there is no more swelling or throbbing. I think by tomorrow or the next day it should be completely gone. I'd never had this before, but if you look at the link, you'll find it is a very common infection of the hand.
My new glasses
Yesterday I picked up my new glasses. I'm getting more and more nearsighted in my left eye, mostly because of a hefty cataract in there, and a much smaller one in the other eye. By this time next year, I'll be getting cataract surgery, I suspect, but for right now my vision can be corrected to nearly 20/20 with glasses. The lens on the left is much stronger, as you can see from the refraction on the outside of my left lens. It looks like my head is caved it, but it's an illusion, I promise.

I was surprised when I put on the new glasses at how much older I look: I can see ALL my wrinkles now in chilling detail. I thought about touching up the picture before I published it, but heck, by the time you are 71, you are entitled to these marks of distinction, right? That's my story and I'm sticking to it!
:-)

  3. I have earned my wrinkles and my grey hair. As you have. And you are a vibrant beauty.
    Ouch on the finger front.

  4. Your poor finger! Washing too much is a problem for Americans, I think. I keep reading about various problems that are caused by the daily removal of protective oil from our skin.
And I think you're beautiful just as you are. Unwrinkled faces are overrated and, to a great extent, uninteresting.

  5. Funny, with my new contacts I can't see myself as well - because now I can't see up close as well since the contacts are correcting nearsightedness.

But, wrinkles are not,you are beautiful!

Hope your finger feels better soon.

  6. A friend of mine just recovered from cataract surgery. She thinks it is remarkable how much her husband has aged :-)

  7. Ouch! That finger looks painful. I hope it clears up soon.

I like your new glasses DJan. And I think you are as beautiful as ever. My theory is we earn each and every wrinkle and gray hair and should wear them proudly.

  8. In my younger years, I used to suffer terribly with chilblains in winter. On occasion, I would also get what my Mum referred to as whitlows, but after checking out your link, I realise it was actually paronychia. VERY painful!

My Dad had cataract surgery and the difference to his vision was remarkable. He could see better than me. LOL

    Btw, you look beautiful!

    Have a great day! :)

  9. I should have an eye exam soon, as my vision has definitely changed. It's been over a year, but I am so lazy about having it done.

  10. Absolutely, you are entitled. We have earned our gray hair and wrinkles.
I got new glasses just before my surgery, and I have had so much blurry vision from different meds and lack of sleep that I have had trouble seeing through them. I do think I need to go back and have them adjusted.I keep trying to find the best focal point. Aggravating.
I am a hand washer but I have never had that condition. Glad it is healing up..

  11. Touch ups! Why on Earth would you even think about it. Not necessary because you look wonderful.
I'm so happy that your finger is feeling better.
I hope that you have a great remainder of the week!

  12. Our bodies certainly do deteriorate both inside and outside. However , we keep on going and enjoying life with the brain. It also helps for the brain to tell us we're okay!

  13. OUCH, DJan! That looks very painful indeed. I'm glad it's feeling better now.

I love your new glasses. You are very beautiful, my friend, and I've always loved your hair especially. As for wrinkles, you have very few. You must take very good care of your skin with all the outdoor activities that you do.

  14. Hey, I like those glasses! I think they make you look younger, not older, like you're expectant, ready to embrace the next beautiful surprise.

  15. Ha ha, I look my best in the morning mirror without glasses on. Really smooths out the wrinkles. Much better selfie than I took. Could be the model.
So glad the finger is healing. Bet you banged that sucker a million times.

  16. I remember the first time I got bifocals and walked outside and fell off the curb. It looked like a close up of the curb I was stepping off of...

  17. We called them "handnails."

  18. that redness makes it look to me to be very painful...or at least at one time painful.

And DJ....I LOVE your selfie. AND your new glasses...smiling beautifully for us.

  20. So glad that your finger is better and that you like your new glasses.

I'm also supposed to have cataract surgery in the next year or so... not because I have cataracts, but supposed to fix the problem with my borderline narrow angle gloucoma.

Last time I was at the eye doctor's (to put the pin back in DH's glasses), I was trying on frames to pass the time and decided that next time I think I'll go for the BIG ones. I mean... if I have to wear glasses, then why not go all out??

  21. I've never heard of that finger condition but thanks for the info. If it is really common, I will hope it ever happens to me. It is always amazing that in trying to solve one problem, another is created. Can't win. New glasses are nice and you always look good--your spirit shines through.

  22. Ouch, that finger had to hurt!
I can just imagine the throbbing, and I bet the slightest bump sent it into unbearable pain. I'm reminded of this fall, when one of our teen boys acquired a staff infection in a small knick in his elbow. The swelling, heat & pain from something so small can be immense.
I'm glad to hear it's almost healed, and I can only dream of looking as good as you do at 71, DJan!! You look fantastic.

  23. Ouch.. that finger looks nasty. That must be where you're hiding those wrinkles of which you speak because I don't see them. You look great.

  24. You look very nice with your glasses.
Until a week ago I had never heard of paronychia. My husband got a very infected big toe then and our primary care doctor said that was what he had. He sent us to a podiatrist who surgically removed my husband’s toe nail – it hurt he said, it still does. He had to take massive antibiotic which brought some drug reaction. In addition he was supposed to have a new cancerous bladder tumor removed and it had to be delayed for another two weeks – because of paronychia. I think your case is not that serious, but make sure you take good care of it.

  25. Lady, you do not look 71!! I like your new glasses. Cataracts run in my family, so I am pretty sure I will be dealing with them one day, too.

I have gotten those infections a couple of times in my life. I would soak the finger in hydrogen peroxide or salt water--over and over--and wait it out. Always went away after while. Never was sure why I got them, either.

  26. Yes those cataracts are miserable, but I am glad they can correct your vision to 20/20. After awhile that won't happen. I had the worst time driving at night the headlights all looked funny..like stars.
Good to hear your finger is better..and I like your photo! :)

  27. I wonder if that is why I keep putting off getting new glasses? Not wanting to see all of my wrinkles...LOL! I think you look marvelous-and ouchie on the sore finger. I'm getting a taste of arthritis, and not liking it one dang bit!

  28. Your poor hand! Could it be something to do with the nail varnish you had on recently for the superbowl? I've heard about people getting infected hands after having their nails done.
Your new glasses are lovely. I really like the shape and they suit you just fine. A good choice D-Jan. I'm going myself at the end of the month. I'm afraid the current fashion for small lensed rectangular frames don't suit me at all. If I could get some like yours, I would be very happy.

  29. You look very good for any age. I gather you have no makeup on in this picture? Some bright red lipstick might just be the right addition.

  30. Ouch! That looks painful. I'm glad to know from your later post that you had it taken care of and it's getting better.

  31. How interesting that we now have a new term in photography, selfies. Twitter is hugely pushing this not so new idea.
    Finger looks sore.

  32. sore fingers are a bother. i've dealt with such before. yours does look sore and angry. hope it is a thing of the past by now.

i love new glasses. i get to "see" new things! your new glasses look nice.
