Lions and iCloud

From WSR Photography
Well, we finally did it! Halfway, anyway. Yesterday Smart Guy uploaded Lion OS 10.7.2 onto my iMac, which I'm using right now, and onto his laptop. That way we can use it and still slip back into our comfort zone with my laptop and his iMac still on Snow Leopard. We resisted getting the new operating system because we were both pretty happy with the old one, and as anybody who has been following the drama of this new system knows, it's not exactly seamless. It's a pretty big change.

However, now that it's on here, the only thing I have to remember is that the scroll button on my mouse now works backwards. Everything seems quite a bit zippier, which is good, and I see I have two new icons in my dock: Launch Pad and Mission Control. They just seem to duplicate other things I use occasionally. Everything I need still seems to be working just fine, so I'm beginning to breathe a sign of relief. So far, so good. I haven't tried some of my apps that I use a lot, such as iPhoto and Flickr, but I can't help but think they've worked out quite a few of those bugs. My sister hasn't converted to Lion yet, because she really likes Quicken and it won't work on Lion. Smart Guy really likes his multiple desktops and thought they would be gone, from what he read, but apparently it's not true. And the brouhaha about the scroll bars missing? They are there on my iMac, so I don't see what the problem is.

But what the whole new operating system is supposed to do is give you the option to put your stuff into the iCloud. It sure sounds airy-fairy, doesn't it? The world of computers is moving so fast these days, I was afraid that if I didn't try to learn about cloud computing, I'd be hopelessly left behind. But the iCloud doesn't sound so wonderful to me. I have learned that the whole idea is to allow me to store data such as music, photos, applications, documents, bookmarks, reminders, notes, books and such and to synch email and calendars on all my devices. Since I currently have three devices (or four, if I count my unused iPod), it sounds pretty cool. The only problem is that I have to LEARN a whole bunch to use it. I'm not exactly sure I want all my pictures to show up on my iPad or laptop, and I don't yet know if I even get to choose. That would take up an awful lot of space, and it sounds a bit like a way to get Apple users to buy more powerful and more expensive machines.

But other than that, I'm pretty pleased that we are stepping into the new era of ubiquitous connectivity and computer power. Way cool!
:-)

  2. Bless you my child. I've let several things related to computers get away from me lately. I've worked all day trying to get up to speed again and it's been a frustrating day.

I know nothing about Cloud except I like the feature of having everything updated on my iPhone, iPad and computer. That's nice. I'm clueless about the rest.

  3. Yay for you. I got my computer just before Snow Leopard came out. So close that I was able to buy the Snow Leopard for just $12 to ease me over. To this date, I've never installed it. So I'm waaaay behind that curve. I guess I ought to, eh?

  4. wow... I just got my MacBook Pro this past May and I'm still learning all the stuff after having been a Windows user since it's inception!

I've seen the iCloud and was curious but dunno if I would change what I already don't know ... ha?

My iPhone is a 3G and I'm about to upgrade to 4G. My videos are acting weird. I've been traveling for over a month and am heading back home. I intend to go see Apple ... They're supposed to be very helpful... we'll see ;)

Glad to read this... hope you post things you learn!

  5. I've waited as well....My fear is more that I'll run into problems because my MacBook was made for Snow Leopard, not Lion. As for iCloud, it sounded great until I started looking into it. I don't really want all of my pictures on my husband's iPad or his stuff on my laptop. Plus, it seems that it would take quite a bit of space which would have to be purchased. For now I'll stick with old fashioned transfer.
And yes, here I am, out of the blue! Still doing well, just busy, but I haven't forgotten you:)

  6. Good for you for stepping out and trying something new. You move forward that way and I'm afraid we can't sit still or we will be left behind.

  7. The Mac users have their own worlds! I already have one phone too many so I am sure the only cloud I would be on is a storm cloud. I am glad you are keeping up..my brother just explained blue tooth to me last week..Far Guys Phone has that but we disabled the Internet from the phone..as we only wanted the phone to get phone calls..and that is complicated enough for me:)

  8. My husband has installed this on his Mac, but I have chosen not to because I like to use my Quicken and can't with Lion.

I have had problems with sharing things with him since his install. I am waiting a bit longer before I decide to make the change if I do change.

  9. I haven't upgraded to Lion yet, either, but I have read that Whitney Lee needn't worry about mixing her pictures and stuff with her husband's. All you need is to have separate "Apple ID"s, which are free. You can even have separate ID's for stuff to keep separate (work items, pictures) and a third family ID for things to share (music?, address books) if you like.

  10. Congrats on your new OS DJan. It's always "exciting" to get a new one since things get changed around. If Apple would let me build my own I would give it a try.

I've been following the development of cloud computing for quite awhile now and find it exciting. Actually it should free up space on your devices as the cloud is elsewhere. I am currently moving my photos to my ISP's cloud.

  11. Oh dear. You lost me quite early here. I am a dinosaur. One who badly needs to get up to speed.

  12. Leopards. lions, iclouds??? I am lost! My MacBookPro has Safari but no clue what the rest of those things are. I always feel like I am trying to find my way around blindfolded in the techie world. *sigh* Most of it sounds like Greek to me. ;)

    Glad you're happy, though. :)

  13. I've tried the i cloud on my ipad, but, uh, haven't learned how to retrieve whatever is there. Am thinking it may require wings. Thanks for the informative post!

  14. Good for you, DJan. You are staying up with the latest technology. After the adjustment period, you will a pro.

  15. How exciting :)

I just got an iPad2 from my dad. I think I'm slowly getting used to it. All these new computer type things are so neat ;)

  16. That sounds very interesting and very techie. I've never had an Apple product so I seem to be stuck in 2000. I used to try to stay on the cutting edge but I am now a dinosaur. Congrats on staying on top of all those expensive innovations.

Last week, we filled out a form to clean out our basement of obsolete electronics so a company would collect all of it to recycle it. So I start to wonder how much do I need to acquire so I can just struggle to recycle it in five years.

  17. Aah, the blessed world of Technology - I love it.
Give me a challenge, keep me updated, pass a new toy my way to conquer. I devour Technology like Kellogs serves breakfast. Occasionally my knickers get in a twist for the frustration sets in, only to discover the answers are there. My advice for everyone is "If ye do not know thee answer, type the question in YOUTUBE". All HAIL YOUTUBE. There is an answer for almost anything on youtube.
Safari, Snow Leopard, Lions, iCloud - Bring it ON :)
Good for you DJan - I like your SMARTZ.

  18. I love Quicken and need all the history, so I'm not going to upgrade to Lion.

I have MobileMe, though, so I already sync my desktop, my laptop and my iPad. That's enough for me.

  19. Technology is an amazing thing! Cloud servers are definitely a great idea where you store all your things in cyberspace and can then access everything from different devices. I can see where it would be very handy. Enjoy learning the new operating system.

  21. All of this is completely foreign to me. I have one phone attached to the wall in the kitchen and a computer that lets me read newspapers across the US. I need to get the book "Computers for Dummies

    Merry Christmas. Pam

  22. We don't use ICloud either. I really don't want all of my personal information floating around out there, lol!

  23. Kinda scary taking that big leap into a whole new system. I'm using a PC, but I love that cloud stuff. Got lots of my Kindle books saved somewhere up in that massive cloud and it sure is nice the way everything zips between all my gadgets.

  24. Hm-m-m, this post makes me wonder. I have had fits lately with my long adored mac, as it's slower than molasses lately! I wonder what I need to do about it. I'm actually going to make an appointment at the apple store to get some knowledgeable advise next week! Maybe I need that new operating system?? Or maybe I need to clean up my messes and file system??

Thanks for food for thought, DJan!

  25. Intuit just announced that they will have a solution that makes Quicken 2007 for Mac "Lion-compatible" by early spring. Nobody seems to know how they plan to do it, but one theory is that they will bake some Rosetta libraries into Quicken.

  26. I assume you know you can use the Mouse settings under System Preferences to get back to the old scroll direction. I had to change it back (although I gave it a week before giving up). Actually, I had to walk through a lot of the System Preferences again, and in the end, Lion feels a lot like Snow Leopard. :-)
