Bellingham loves Halloween

I went down to the Farmers' Market this morning to pick up my weekly veggies, and since Monday is Halloween and I remembered last year everybody was in costume, I hoped to find some fun pictures to share. This adorable young lady was hoping I'd take a picture of her dress, she looks so cute in it, and her mother (?) is also in costume. But I'm afraid the flower child stole my heart.
This vendor has an entire costume for a party she's attending, but this morning wore only the headdress, which I must say is quite beautiful. Obviously she's going as a unicorn; she told me she made this and is quite happy to find her horn isn't going to fall off. This morning the festive atmosphere was heightened by sunny skies (at least partly sunny) and no rain! It rained all day long yesterday and is forecast to do the same tomorrow. Sort of like our hiking group noticed, lately we've had one nice day interspersed with a not-so-nice one.
Here's an organic farmer who shares a hippie background with me, I'd say. Love her glasses! She and her partner are both in costume today. Too bad I need glasses to see; I can never wear this kind of cool eyewear because they don't fit over the ones I need to keep from bumping into things.

After Thursday's wonderful hike, I've come down with a head cold that makes me wonder if it's because I did so much last week. I skipped the walk and swim today and will go to the movies instead and sit inside. My friend Judy and I are going to see 50/50 -- everybody needs a good cry now and then, right? (For those of you who don't know the premise, it's about a 27-year-old guy who learns he has cancer. They say it's not only a tear-jerker but also humorous.) I'll wait to read the reviews (in the link above) until after I've seen the movie.
:-)

  4. Gorgeous costumes at the markets. Get better soon. I always think that colds make a person feel miserable out of all proportion to the severity of the illness. Hope it leaves you quickly and I am waiting for a movie review.

  6. There are some cool costumes out there that would even get a response from spoil sport like myself!
I've herd about your winter rain. My son lives in the Vancouver area so I rear about the rain.
Look after yourself and slay the cold.

  7. I know I've been absent and need to keep reading to fill myself in on all you've been doing! I'm sorry you're under the weather; I hope it's short lived. I think a quiet day and a movie sound lovely.
I love the costumes. It's sweet to be around children this time of year, particularly young ones. It's all about dressing up and candy:)

  8. I thought of you today, DJan, as I was doing my version of "hiking" with my sister. Mine wasn't nearly as strenuous as your typical trek, but I loved getting out! Sorry you have a head cold, and hope you are quickly back to your usual busy self!

    Loved the pictures!

  9. You lead such a rich and full life, DJan. A much more active one than mine. I spent part of the afternoon watching UH beat Idaho in football in Idaho. One of my blog friends joined us for lunch and the game. Great fun! Now, I am catching up with blog-reading. That's fun, too.

  11. The little girl is so excited in her costume. Interesting that the Farmers Market vendors dress in costume for Halloween. I do miss a Farmers Market here in our little town. I hope you feel better soon. Let me know when you read the book and when you get started. Or if you have any questions, email me. Take care of yourself today. I wish I could share my homemade soup with you.

  13. Costumes look great and most colorful - Nice
Market looks cheery and everybody getting ready for Halloween. We have approx 120 kids come to our door. Must be the squeaky music that attracts them or perhaps the lone wolf howling in the night. he,he
Thanks for the Costume Post, n hope your cold is gone soon.

  14. I am surprised some of the girls around here have not mentioned it yet.

The term 50/50 used to be a dancing event. Half or 50% of it was country or hillbilly and the other was regular ballroom or popular dancing.

  15. What a fun post! I wish I had a farmer's market to go to where I could see some Hallween/fall things.

I'm so sorry you've caught a cold. This is the season for it, I'm afraid. Please take care. Airborne helped me... I think.

  18. I'm just getting over a cold so you have my deepest sympathies!
The halloween costumes were great. Loved looking at those and what a good idea for the farmer's market sellers to do that.
As I sit typing this, the trick or treaters are doing their rounds. Some of them aren't even wearing a costume!
    Get well soon.

  19. Flower children indeed. What fun. Here Holloween isn't the same as the demographics of our neighborhood have changed from young families with kids to mostly retired people. No

  20. Jan,I finally figured out how to comment! I've had a cold too. We've had out of state company, now out of town company is coming on Wed. I miss seeing you at the Y, but we'll be there when we can be. Your pictures are soooo good and love to hear your story. We did Yellow Aster Butte last Tues, lovely with the snow and blue sky-Roger & Dorothy

  21. I've seen some creative costumes this year. I am totally without imagination that way, so I try to hide on Halloween.

  22. The little girl in your first photo is absolutely adorable, I love her costume. It does look like a beautiful day at your market. We had sunshine on Saturday and it poured on Sunday.

I hope you are feeling better by now. There is nothing like a cold to dampen ones spirits.

  24. It's best to take it easy when one feels the sniffles - and what better place than in a nice warm movie?

  25. Even though Spain doesn't really "do" Halloween, I saw plenty of kids in costumes walking around with their parents this weekend. Adorable they were, but none as original as the people you've shown us here!
