Opening doors

Robert and Gene replacing the doorknob at Avellino's
When I got to the coffeeshop this morning, Gene was puzzling over the new doorknob he had just purchased to replace the one that broke at Avellino's this morning. The real problem was getting the old one off first. After trying various unsuccessful methods, another customer walked up and told Gene where the likely spot to press might be, and before long it was off. Then the only problem was putting in the new one, which was pretty straightforward.

Except that he managed to replace the outside knob and the latch first, and when he pushed the inside knob onto the correct place, the outside knob fell right off onto the pavement. Ooops! We were locked in. It took quite a bit of help from other customers before it was all finished. Fortunately he got help from an arriving customer who pushed the outside knob back on so she could come inside and get some coffee. The phrase "it takes a village" went through my mind as I watched. I was the holder of the flashlight as they worked away.
William at Yoga Northwest
Then I was off to open another kind of door at my Tuesday yoga class. I am now taking a class on Tuesdays as well as Wednesdays, and I am enjoying them both very much. William's class is easier and less challenging then the one Denise teaches, but both are helping to strengthen my back and to regain some lost flexibility. I always prided myself on how flexible I was, but as I've aged that has changed. Both of these yoga classes are designed to be gentle for people with knee and back issues. No shoulder- or headstands. And it's another place where I feel right at home.

  1. I think you feel right at home in most every situation. That must mean you are very comfortable inside your skin. That's such a good way to go through life. You go girl. The world needs more of your kind.

  4. Good thing that lady needed her coffee! You might still be there holding the flashlight. I love William's smile - a positive roll model.

  5. I think I may have had to fight back the giggles over that doorknob project. Good thing help arrived.
I'm not into group exercise, so even though Yoga might be helpful, I don't see myself doing it. I have a set of physical therapy prescribed exercises that I try to do most days that do help with flexibility, balance and core strength.
Glad you found another place to make yourself at home. :-)

  6. Another of those things we take for granted - until it doesn't work. We have had similar issues with doorknobs here.
You are nudging me towards yoga classes. I did it in the dark ages (I think I was in my teens) and let it slide. And I am now as flexible as a brick.

  7. The doorknob story almost reminds me of joke. It wasn't a joke that it took several to accomplish the task. Such jobs can be very challenging at times.

I've been thinking of joining a nearby Pilates place. I prefer it over Yoga. Although, if there was a place where I could do gentle Yoga close by, I'd go there. Flexibility is an issue as we age.

  8. I have a feeling that everywhere you go, you will feel right at home!

The door knob thing made me smile - mainly because I would have been laughing through the whole thing.

  9. Good to hear you like the yoga classes! Sometimes it does take a village to fix a problem, sounds like a very helpful group of people:)

  10. Great doorknob escapade. I am taking yoga, too, when not on the road, and it is also geared to us older folks with 'special needs'.

  11. The door knob issue certainly sounds very familiar. I was surprised when the outside knob dropped off with a big clatter.

  14. I was temporarily locked in a yucky bathroom in Panama. Luckily, I lived to tell the tale. Jeepers creepers. I'm glad you got a kick out of my Smartie Paws post. Are you still missing your neighbor cat?

  15. Yep, I would go for the more gentle Yoga class. I have been locked in, once when the doornob fell off the bathroom door. ha,ha My Dad took the hinges off the door. ha,ha

  16. Ha, ha! That's why I try to avoid doing home repairs as much as possible!

  17. Those kinds of repairs can definitely be a challenge sometimes. I should probably get back into a yoga class, now that my back has been repaired. My daughter takes a "hot yoga" class.

  18. Glad they got the doorknob replaced. All I could contribute is to hold the flashlight, too, and watch--LOL!

I am so glad you found not one but two yoga classes that you enjoy! That's wonderful. Have fun!! :)

  20. Ha ha, that doorknob thing was just funny. They are trickier than they look. I've never had one go easy.
So glad you found a yoga class that suits. Sure wish we had one like that (or any kind really) here.

  22. Coffee sounds good to me, but yoga does not afterI tried it a couple of times and then decided flexibility was not my strong point. Nice to have so many helpful folks around to fix the door knob.
