These doctors just keep getting younger

Dr Patrick Blair
Meet Dr Patrick Blair, my new Primary Care Physician (PCP). It was five years ago now that I wrote about my new doctor at the time, Dr Brent Whitehead and how young he looked. Brent has gone onto to a different clinic, and I was given a new PCP without any input from me. I saw him for the first time yesterday, and I was amazed that he's even YOUNGER than my previous doctor, who looked so young to me. I'll bet he isn't even thirty yet.

But lucky me, Patrick is a gem! We chatted for awhile about various things and I learned that he is just out of residency and this is his first job. He is from South Dakota but his wife grew up in Seattle, so they ended up here. He loves it as much as I do. I realized when I read that earlier post that I had decided to lose ten pounds I had gained and that I've kept it off since then. I patted myself on the back, but so did Patrick! He said that whatever I'm doing, I should keep on doing it. All my lab numbers are good, and he ordered a bone density test since it's been awhile. He cautioned me, however, that the drugs available for osteoporosis are not as effective as weight-bearing exercise.

I told him of my activities and he was suitably impressed and said that hiking and walking are the best things I could be doing for my bones. He told me that it's important to keep flexible and when I told him about my yoga classes, he suggested that I continue with them, so I will consider that my "prescription" when it comes time to sign up for the next semester.

Today when I took the bus to my yoga class, I got off a little early so I could walk in the brilliant sunshine and enjoy the sights of our early spring. I saw daffodils in bloom, and the trees everywhere are sprouting blossoms and tiny new green leaves. We have three days of sunshine and blue skies ahead, with above-normal temperatures, so I suspect that you'll be seeing lots of springtime pictures on my Thursday post.
:-)

  1. That I'd do also....get off the bus and walk! I love walking at my leisure [still getting exercise] and drinking in the sights and sounds...Especially of Springtime.

  3. Yes, he does look young! But I've found that what the young ones lack in experience, they make up for in *new knowledge and procedures*! Our PCP is our age and will probably retire soon. But his 2 young nurse practitioners are excellent.

  7. Congratulations on your good health. Keep it up and you'll only need to see that young guy for checkups. That's the best revenge--living well and healthy.

  9. It's great that you got a new Doc that you like. It's too bad we can't keep the same doc for a while. I'd say you got perfect marks from the new guy . Congratulations.

  13. Just like your lost keys in a previous post, it sounds like you have found the key to good health. A handsome young doctor and lots of exercise. You are an inspiration to us all. I just saw you commented over at my writing blog. Thanks so much for the visit!

  14. If he's young that probably means he's up on all the latest medical advances, so good for you. However (to paraphrase Bob Dylan), You don't need to be a primary care doctor to know you're doin' the right things.

  15. I'll bet if that doctor has a blog, he is bragging about the amazingly fit lady he had in his office. If everyone were like you, he would be out of a job. Keep doing all the right things.

  16. For sure. In fact some of the young doctors I see were children of former high school students of mine and in one case a grandchild. Yikes!!!

  18. I also recently acquired a new Doctor, she is a heart specialist from Bulgaria, and landed here in our town as my PCP, so I not only have a PCP, I also have a heart specialist. She also is called into the city to teach at the University. We are very happy to have such a talented Doctor. I am glad you have such a nice Doctor and just keep doing what you are doing kiddo.

  19. I'll bet he was so impressed with your lifestyle backed up by your results. I wonder if he'll be as fit as you when he gets to your age. Doubt it.

  20. He may be young, but it sounds like he's got your best interests at heart. He's also probably knowledgeable about the latest medical data around. Congratulations on your good health. I was admonished to do more exercising by my nurse practitioner, Kathy. He'd probably love it if I'd do some hiking and MORE walking. Sigh....

  21. When I met my orthopedic surgeon, I wondered what high school he had skipped out of that day.

I love this blog too. Must follow!

  22. Your new PCP seems like such a gem. PCPs are getting harder and harder to find. Good ones are a treasure. (He's cute too.) You are doing such a good job of self care. I bet you made your new doc's day.
