The great pumpkin

How much does it weigh?
Outside the Community Food Co-op, this enormous pumpkin sits, with a box to collect guesses as to how much it weighs. I woke up this morning pondering how one might figure that out. If it were a person, I'd guess in the 300-pound range. But it's a pumpkin, so I'm thinking it might be even more than that. Anyway, it's huge. It's the time of year when pumpkins and falling leaves remind me that winter is just around the corner.

We've had two full days of fog, basically negating any chance that I might have had to get a skydive under my belt here in Washington state before the season ends. Next weekend I'll be spending on Vashon Island with my blogging friends, so this was my last chance. We expected that the fog wouldn't hang around all day, but we were all wrong. It's because we've had a temperature inversion and little to no wind to blow it all away. It will probably be sunny and bright tomorrow, just to spite me.
Normal sized pumpkins
I've been enjoying seeing the fall colors and decorations that my blogging friends have posted on their websites, so I figure I should at least show you what it looks like around here. I'm reading three books at once and sort of forgot that I needed to put up a weekend post, so this is my attempt at quelling that nagging feeling inside that I was missing something...

  3. What a colourful post. Love pumpkin - anyway it comes. Some day I will have to try pumpkin pie.
I am sorry that the fog kept you from the skies.
Have a wonderful weekend with your blogging friends - and a great week before it.

  5. Thanks for checking in with your share of the autumnal color. I do love the leaves and the pumpkins, but I am getting weary of the fog. Looks like we may have it all week.

  7. Well at least the fog gave you a chance to catch up on some reading. Sorry you didn't get to go skydiving however. That is one big pumpkin!

  8. 300 lbs is very heavy, so that would be my guess for that pumpkin. Too bad you could not sky dive this weekend.

  9. Morning DJAN - Love the pumpkins - patch of pumpkins always so colourful, especially in field prior to clearing them for sale. That is quite the Mother of Pumpkins there. I have been out "Fall Photo Shooting" and loving it.

  10. Aw, sorry you didn't get to blow the dust off.
I know someone who was a competition pumpkin grower. Huge is not by accident. It takes care and knowledge and in his case, lots of milk.
Looking forward to your pictures and tales from the meet and greet with your blog buddies.

  12. I'm sorry but I can't give you hints on the pumpkin weight. All I know is that part of the pumpkin must be very dense as even the smaller ones are heavy when you lift them.
Have a good time with your blogging buddies.

  13. Wonder whether those large pumpkins have much flavour. No idea about weight but I like your thinking comparing it to your own weight.

  15. Dear DJan, I always read your "Eye" blog first. Yesterday on it you wrote about the possibility of skydiving but this blog tells me that you didn't get to do that. Bummer!

I remember your posting last year about the vacation with your fellow bloggers. It was from those postings that I started following two or three of the bloggers with whom you had such a great time. I was already following two of them.

I trust that the six of you will have an equally wonderful time this year! Peace.

Oh, and I just read on today's Google home page that this is the anniversary [216th, I think] of the first parachute jump.....thought of DJan right away!!

  20. Pumpkins in lots of different colours. Don't they look wonderful. I was looking at white pumpkins last Saturday, but in the end I chose an orange one. This weekend I will be decorating it.
I guess the pumpkin weighs around 250 pounds, but it is a guess, I have no idea really!

  22. I would guess under 200 for that pumpkin. but just. You're one heck of a multi-tasker if you can read three books at once.

  23. I too love Fall. I love pumpkins, they are friendly, I say. Their color and shapes are compelling, as are the autumn leaves.
