Back to my routine

The wind piled up these leaves
Sunday afternoon, as I was driving north up I-5 from Linda's home (where I had left my car when we carpooled to Vashon Island), the wind started up. It blew for the rest of the day, with some gusts reaching 50mph (80kmh) in Bellingham. It made short work of the fog we've had for two weeks, as well as taking leaves off trees all over the area.

The picture was taken of the leaves in front of my local coffee shop yesterday morning. It was early enough that store owners and customers hadn't yet disturbed them. Although it's hard to tell from the picture, they had piled up almost to my knees. I walked happily through them on my way to the Y, and a man traveling the opposite direction playfully kicked some of them towards me. We had some fun with the leaves, and he was at least as old as me. Imagine two kids playing in the leaves, and you've got a little bit of the feeling I had.

The brilliant blue sky has lifted the spirits of passersby and my fellow bus riders. It's been a good morning. I learned that the weight of the pumpkin I showed you last week (here) will be revealed on Halloween, which is now only a couple of days away. We'll be hiking that day, and the forecast keeps promising some precipitation after three days of sunshine. Oh, well; I'll still have fun. Wonder if any of my fellow hikers will dress up for the occasion. You can never tell about us. Reminds me that I have a black cape somewhere in my closet.
:-)

  2. Reminds me of the old Irish poem:

May the road rise up to meet you.
    May the wind be always at your back;
To blow the leaves to someplace new,
Where someone else stuffs them in a sack.

  8. That must have been quite a wind or there were an awful lot of leaves. I guess if they all go at once they make a big pile.

  9. What a great little encounter you had with the stranger in the leaves. I love that you both had some fun with it. I wonder if a passerby grabbed a video of your leaf-kicking. Wouldn't that be a hoot to find yourself on YouTube.

  12. Your black cape will be perfect! Draw some polka dots on your cheeks and you will be all set! Your leave look way prettier than mine:)

  13. What is it about a pile of leaves in the fall that brings out the kid in us? I'm glad you and the gentleman had some fun.

I agree, the Trailblazers should be in costume for this week's hike.

  14. I have loved seeing the sun lighting up the leaves still on the trees. With another storm coming Saturday they will all be on the ground soon - too soon. But November is almost here.
We have been very busy getting the house ready for Jill to move into. We'll take time to go to another soccer game and celebrate Halloween with the kids.
    Happy Halloween!

  15. Haha. I can just picture you and the man kicking leaves at each other, much like a snowball fight. Give me blue skies any day. I hate fog.

  16. Jack, Toby and I played in the leaves yesterday. I raked them and they ran through them - we all had fun. Nice to see you and fellow playfully kick leaves at each other - from the child within each of you - Always remember to play, my Mum would say. Get that cape out SUPER JAN and climb those mountains - just......for goodness sake.....don't jump off one - the cape trick doesn't work - you were one of the kids that jumped off the barn roof with us with our capes on, wern't you ---except in another yard in another part of another country :)

Can't wait to see if you all dress up.

  18. Gotta shuffle through the leaves at least once every autumn. And I'm so glad you finally get to see sky and sun! Happy Halloween, with or without a costume!

Way to stay forever young, DJan!

  20. I'm always so bad at estimating weight or girth. This should be interesting. I love Tom Sightings comment. We used to wish that during the Midwestern falls.

  22. Wow. That is a big pile of leaves. And fun too. I really like you pictures of Vashon Island. Just gorgeous. We're to spend some time on an island in the Big Bend of Florida this winter. A first for us...:)

  24. Love autumn leaves too! Would never rake them up if it were up to me... just leave them on the lawn to look beautiful. But DH says that they would kill the grass.
