Our first snow of the season

Not much but quite pretty

It's been a couple of years since Bellingham has seen any lowland snow, but I think this year might be different, for a few reasons. One, the incredible amount of rain we've had so far (with more in the forecast), and knowing that it only needs to be a little colder (which is what happens during winter) for us to have the precipitation turn to snow.

Today, when I looked outside before sunrise, I saw white stuff on the lawn and reflected in the outdoor lights, still on as the days have gotten so short. We are not far from the shortest day and longest night of the year: December 21, 2021 at 7:59 am PST. That's two weeks from tomorrow! And not long after that, the new year will begin and the holidays will be behind us.

I've been enjoying the holiday season very much so far. Even the ubiquitous commercials all clamoring for me to buy something haven't bothered me very much. That could be for several reasons, the most important being that at my age there is nothing much I need. Yes, I'll probably make a purchase or two, but I and my partner don't exchange gifts, and there are no children looking to me for anything. I remember how much I looked forward to Christmas when I was a kid. My sister and I would even search for where our parents hid the presents and try to find out what we were getting. I know it was wrong but we were unable to wait! I got pretty good at feigning surprise (smile).

Santa needs a boost

Walking to the bus this morning in the dark, I passed by this home that always makes an effort to decorate. I noticed that Santa and his reindeer were a little collapsed on the roof, probably from the weight of the snow, miniscule as it was. You can see on the lawn there was a mere inch of the white stuff. But then again, it's early December, with much more likely to come. I'll keep an eye on Santa.

:-)

  1. Your snow is very pretty. Very, very pretty. In days gone by I was an expect at pinch, poking and rattling a wrapped parcel to determine what it contained. I got so good I could tell you what brand soap was used...

  2. Love your snow. I'm envious for we are scheduled for warmer than normal winter. Sigh. Seems you have really had an unusual weather season. I too remember the excitement as a child. Kind of miss that.

  3. That is pretty.

I want Christmas to be done and over. Without fail it is a difficult time of year each and every year.

  4. OH, I do love Christmas lights in the snow!
Not even a flake here south of Seattle. But I can wait. Snow now would be inconvenient. I'm holding out for January.

  5. You enjoy the snow!! I'll bask in the warm south clime.

Christmas wasa big thing as a child, but now, nothing special/gift giving. We buy year 'round instead of just one day!!

    Enjoy your Washington winter!!

  6. Well DJan, you beat us to the punch! Pittsburgh usually has a couple snows by now, but we're still waiting. Your pics were very pretty and I enjoyed your childhood memories. One year when I was a kid, my sister and I went through the house on Christmas Eve and turned the clocks ahead an hour so Christmas morning we could jump on our parents' bed and tell them to get up it was 6:00 a.m. They bought it until someone turned on the TV while we were unwrapping presents and it was still static. ☺️🎄⛄

    1. What a charming story of creative children. Nowadays if you see static on your TV, something's broken. Linda in Kansas

  7. You have more snow than I have. It was very dry all summer so it looks like it's going to keep on being dry.

  8. Hard to believe the shortest day of the year has almost crept up on us, esp. we have not seen any snow yet.

  10. Watch a peaceful way to walk in the morning. (Maybe the roof items are those blow-up puffy things?) Linda in Kansas

  11. That slightly sticky snow that clings to branches are so pretty. We don't have snow here except on Mauna Kea on the Big Island, but right now we are having torrential rains and floods. We were having a bit of a drought and suddenly we seem to be making up for it all at once.

This might be an interesting winter. :)

  13. I always checked around the house looking for the hidden presents when I was a child ... found them sometimes too... but never let on. DH and I don't swap gifts anymore either, although sometimes we put a few things under the tree to share. But I do love the holiday season and so glad you got snow!

  15. Dear DJan, thanks for sharing the "tipsy" Santa with us! Like you, i need so little nowadays. And what I do need, I order from Hy-Vee (grocery store) for delivery or Amazon or Chewy (the cats insist on this!!!!) So I exchange gifts with only a couple of friends. One thing in life we can be certain of--there is always change happening. Peace.

  16. I just returned from a short trip to Seattle to see my new (and cute) grandson. It was supposed to snow on Monday but it didn't. The weather was easy for me - 40's and no wind. I would have liked to see snow but glad it didn't because I am always worried about the kids driving in the snow.

  17. You and Melanie are absolutely amazing. Just looking at all those wet snow photos made me shiver. I love that photo of the tree roots over the rocks. Wow!
