Frosty Christmas week

Rose hips (Jessica Hamerski)

While looking for a picture to grace my Monday post, I found this lovely shot, taken this morning and posted on the Seeing Bellingham Facebook group. Jessica Hamerski captured what to me is a perfect Christmas scene, frosty red rose hips. I didn't even venture out to walk today, but I could have taken this myself if I hadn't been feeling so lazy.

It's definitely feeling a lot more like Christmas here, with the temperatures plummeting and the stores filled with shoppers. I went to the grocery store and was amazed at the numbers, then I remembered that it will be like this right up to Saturday, when many places will close for the holiday. I'm finally set for the duration.

It was very strange not going to the coffee shop this morning. I'm going to stay away for awhile, until the virus settles down a bit. My partner decided that, in order to get a good seal on his new masks, he needed to shave off his beard and moustache! It's been ages since I've seen him clean shaven, but I'm already getting used to it. Men can change their looks so much by simply changing their facial hair. And it's been decades that I've seen that bare face I love so much.

We might actually have a white Christmas here, with our ubiquitous precipitation possibly becoming snow on Saturday! We'll see. At least I won't have to drive anywhere: no place will be open, other than Safeway where we found coffee on Thanksgiving. Maybe John, Gene, Lily and I will get together there, masked and socially distanced, of course. John's heavy truck should do just fine in a little bit of the white stuff.

I'm hoping you are all staying safe and warm in your own happy places. It's the season to be celebrating, whatever your beliefs. In the words of a dear blogging friend, Merry EVERYTHING!

:-)

  1. We have snow on the ground.

I've been largely wearing bandannas over the course of the pandemic.

  2. We had slush fall most of the morning here, but the forecast says we will get cold enough for snow on Christmas day and thereafter. We'll see.
Today was housecleaning and laundry day here, and now we are finished and can be lazy. It's 3:30 and very dark. I have both Christmas trees lit and soon we'll turn on the outside lights. Tomorrow is Solstice!

  5. I know it is hard for you to give up your coffee shop mornings for now but I am glad you are staying safe. Enjoy getting reacquainted with your newly shaven man--LOL! I hope you do get a little snow for Christmas. :)

  6. We’re very nervous with Omicron hitting our island hard now too. Our infection rate was 150 on December 13th. It went to 972 yesterday. My nephew is an ER nurse and he says it’s like it was before the vaccine. AND he says young vaccinated people are testing positive. Someone admitted to testing positive and then going to a bar. Arrrghhh… I would love to see Art barefaced. 😊

  7. If you stay in as much as I do, Christmas just might pass you by and you wouldn't know it.

  9. That is a stunning photo.
And Merry Everything indeed - all year round.
I have only once since my partner's naked face in over forty years. I liked it - he didn't.

  10. Had to smile about your clean shaven SG. I had a friend's husband do that and she said she felt like she was cheating on her husband as the new guy looked so different:)
Have a wonderful and Merry Everything.

  11. Love that photo! Frosty redness is so appropriate for the season.

Smart move for you hubby to shave his facial hair for mask fitting. The spread of the latest variant is scary fast. Staying safe is the goal again this holiday season. I double mask when I ventured out.

  12. I always enjoy the photos you take (or select to use) for your blog DJan. Well, I'm sorry about you having to cut back on your socializing, but it sounds like the smart thing to do with this latest runaway variant. I feel like we're living in a Michael Crichton novel! Until you blog again, I hope you & your clean shaven SG have a wonderful Christmas holiday. :^)

  13. Lovely photo of the rose hips. You have to do what you feel is necessary to stay safe. I just need to collect a few bits of food which I've ordered for the holiday and then enjoy the company of close family. Merry Christmas DJan.

  14. I've often wondered about that... the beard kind of negating the use of a mask to some extent. Didn't know others thought about that too. And I, like Dug, often feel like we're in a sci fi movie when walking around in the grocery with everyone masked and the announcer saying "... with the new variant, we recommend all our customers wear masks... etc." Who knew that we would have days (months/years) like this? But glad you and your partner are playing it safe.

  15. Hey, you should have posted a photo of SG without the facial hair. I bet he looks a lot younger!

  16. I have just returned from grocery pickup. From what I could see, the parking lot and store were bust busy busy. I don't know about your assessment about men and facial hair. With the hair that women do have, they can redo it and colour it at will. Mind you, your guy probably has hair too. Sigh. 😔

  20. Dear DJan, a feeling of contentment emanates from this posting. So glad that you are within yourself in such a good place. Glad also that you are enjoying the Advent Calendar. I play the five activities in the room each day and search for the hidden ornament. (I"ve found them all thus far!) I'm also enjoying reading--each day--the London book on the side table to the left. I like the one today on Santa and his various origins and names. Peace.

  21. I got my booster and a week later, feeling wild, mall walked without a mask. I got sick. Now I'm a recluse. Have a safe and happy holiday! And fun hikes in 2022 too.
