Brilliance in colors and a Netflix series

Now that's red (and yellow)

When I was out walking last week, I saw this incredible bush (or tree, I'm not sure) with the yellow leaves behind it. I know that this time of year we get some of the most beautiful colors ever, and this caught my eye and I knew I wanted to share it with my readers. When they get to this stage, it won't be long before they fall. It's wonderful to be able to preserve the moment with my trusty iPhone camera.

I've watched three of the seven episodes of The Queen's Gambit on Netflix and am enjoying it immensely. The series is based on a book by Walter Tevis, written in 1983. As you might expect by the title, it's all about a female chess champion.

The Queen's Gambit is a fictional story that follows the life of an orphan chess prodigy, Beth Harmon (Anya Taylor-Joy), during her quest to become the world's greatest chess player while struggling with emotional issues and drug and alcohol dependency. The story begins in the mid-1950s and proceeds into the 1960s.

I will probably get ahold of the book once I finish the series so I can compare the novel with the series. I am very impressed by Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Beth Harmon. She makes the character come alive for me. It's also pretty wonderful to have a diversion from the news of the day. I am tentatively optimistic about things, but I'll sure feel a lot better once we get through the next few weeks and months.

:-)

  1. What a brilliant colored bush, it looks like a burning bush, but not sure. Thank you for the recommendation, I shall look it up.
Hope you have a wonderful week dear friend,

  3. There is nothing quite like the reds of the Japanese maple trees. We have several lit up now in our yard. Sadly, the leaves are already falling.
I noted the Netflix series and will put it on our watch list. Right now we are still enjoying Shitt's Creek, and watching Orange Is The New Black.

  4. Don't have Netflix so I will try to find the book. Sorry I never learned to play chess. Guess it isn't too late.

  7. That does it, I'm starting Queen's Gambit immediately after Rachel Maddow. (I'm trying to cut down on the MSNBC binge-watching, but I can't give up Rachel.) :)

  8. That is an amazing tree! Wow! I can't remember seeing a color like that on a maple tree. I'm still watching Call the Midwife.

  11. I just finished watching Shitt's Creek on Netflix and found it to be so entertaining! I totally relate to Moira Rose, and one of my daughters is a combination of David and Alexis. It was amazing to me how unoffensive gay behavior was - how natural it was, and joyous.

  12. Around our house everyone says "no" to me when I want to play chess. They accuse me of cheating when in a few moves, it's checkmate! Beautiful crimson red leaves.

  13. Beautiful tree. I used to play chess and was lousy at it. Ha.

  14. We are into late autumn here, just the trunks and branches remain now. Sigh!

  17. Just wanted to share that I watched the first 2 episodes of Queen's Gambit, and it's really good. I love Beth (the chess prodigy) but there's something very brave about her that reminds me of a certain skydiver I know ;)

PS. Okay I just saw Honolulu Aunty's praise of "Shitt's Creek"; all I hear are good things about that show, after Gambit I'm giving it a go. Thanks for the good reviews here.

  18. Many people have recommended that series to me. I watched a couple episodes of Schitt's Creek and couldn't get into it at all. Didn't like the humor.
