Abundance

Rob's ripe raspberries
I've been out in the garden today picking raspberries. These are Ron's, which he is guarding carefully, but he must pick them himself when he's ready. I hauled in three large containers full today, and there's that many more in my garden ready to eat. I'll go out again tomorrow, probably.
Remaining fennel
I picked one of the three bulbs of fennel I had grown in my garden. Hauling out the Crock Pot, I threw in a bunch of vegetables along with the sliced fennel, some black-eyed peas, and cooked it all night long. The resultant soup/stew has a light anise taste from the fennel, which is otherwise unrecognizable. The green fronds didn't cook down or anything, so I pretty much took them out. It was a good experiment, though.

Hope you have a wonderful Fourth of July celebration if that's your thing. I'll be sticking my head under the covers during the loud fireworks! Make sure your pets are inside and safe.
:-)

  1. I cooked today, so I can add to the food for our Fourth celebration tomorrow evening at Jan's house on the water near Gig Harbor. there will be a fireworks show. Yes, that is my thing. We'll attend a brunch and a parade in the morning. We celebrate the day fully. But i will have no raspberries to pick and share again this year. Maybe we'll have a few by next year. The plants are growing.

  2. We had raspberries in back of our house when I was a kid. I'd wade in to pick them -- they were great -- but oh, the prickers!

I think raspberries here are still a week or so away from being ready.

  11. Those raspberries are beautiful. Our wild ones are ripening here tiny little berries, but oh so good. Happy 4th! We keep having thunderstorms so Chance is hiding most of the time...under the stairs or under my feet:)

  12. I'm glad I'm not too close to fireworks here and it's too hot to have the patio door open. The sound will me more muffled with the door closed but I'm sure Annie will be hiding under the bed tonight till it's over.

The raspberries look luscious! Happy 4th! :)

  14. My husband and my friend were just discussing fennel over dinner tonight. My husband loves to make a fennel salad (don't ask me what's in it - ok ask, and I'll ask him) that they both love. Those raspberries look yummy! Happy 4th.

  15. MMMmmmm! Those raspberries look yummy! There weren't any in the market this week, but the BC cherries are in so we are eating our way through a four-pound bag of those. Don't you just *love* summer?

  16. Those raspberries look so good! How I miss the days when I once grew raspberries. The bears would get them here if they would even grow in the environment.

Hmmm fennel in a stew is something I will have to think about. Was it good?
