A momentous week

Terry showing what's left of Chuckanut Creek
My morning walk with the ladies started at the Ferry Terminal and traveled down to the Arroyo Park trailhead and over the bridge that spans Chuckanut Creek. I was really shocked to see how little water is in the creek, and we are just now starting our normal dry season. In the fall, the salmon spawn in this creek, but who knows what will happen this fall? Terry would normally be standing in water to mid-calf. Not this year. And hot? We Pacific Northwesterners are not used to this kind of heat, and it's just beginning. Our summer usually starts (read: dries out) after the 4th of July.

But! Most momentous of all this week are the two Supreme Court rulings that surprised me. The Obamacare challenge worried me the most, because if they had ruled against it, the cost of everybody's insurance would have skyrocketed. I was so relieved when I heard the news that I woke up Smart Guy (it was 7:00am here) and told him about it. And that the ruling was 6-3 surprised me even more.

And then yesterday, they affirmed that gays have the right to marry in every state in the nation. This one was a 5-4 decision, but still, it means that we have now joined twelve other nations in recognizing that we are all equal under the law. I didn't expect this one.

Oh, and we got our advance directives for our end-of-life care notarized and filed, and today I sold my skydiving gear to a wonderful young woman. What a week! It will take me awhile to integrate it all.
:-)

  1. What a huge week.
And I love the affirmation that love is love is love.
I hope my country will come to the party soon as well. Very soon. It is already well overdue.

  2. DJan, I too was happy (and surprised) with the decisions that came down this week. It's a slow process... one step forward, 2 steps back... but maybe we're getting there.

  3. I have heard many com[plaints that Health Insurance premiums went sky high after Obama care...we are not personally affected so I don't pay too much attention.
As for the other ruling...I saw no point to it other than to get healthcare. I am certain God will sort it all out...so I won't judge. Many of my friends are quite outspoken about it. We have a fair amount of Gay/Lesbians in our area...none of whom are married:)

  6. I am sitting here in the late afternoon, avoiding the heat outside, by reading on my laptop. I just watched a series of videos of our President, speaking about the Supreme Court rulings about health care and same sex marriage, and then delivering the eulogy at the funeral for the pastor shot in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he broke into song, singing Amazing Grace. It was certainly a momentous week for President Obama, and for our country, and for all of us. And for you too, DJan. I also read and saw that you sold your sky diving gear. I'm sure that young woman will carry on the legacy you have passed to her.
Now to stay cool during this prolonged heat wave. Thank goodness it isn't the sticky heat I left in the south this Wednesday.

  8. A wonderful week for our nation, the President, and you too! Sometimes the long, slow road taken finally results in victory.

  9. You had a big day with the two social issues. I'll never forget a woman I talked to and how important it was for her to marry her partner. There are too many people who cannot afford any health care and that is a tragedy. So what did you do to celebrate this week???

  10. Happy to see that gay marriage is now legal nationwide. And happy about the Obamacare ruling too.

  11. It was rather an incredible week and it ended with the President singing Amazing Grace. I'm so glad the Supreme Court did what was right instead of ruling in a partisan manner.

  12. Obama was incredible singing Amazing Grace. & he had plenty of grace this week - ObamaCare upheld, gays can marry. I'm shocked that the latter was still an issue, but hey, better slow change than none at all.

  13. You have had a rather incredible week DJan ending with selling your sky diving equipment on a less than one liner at the end. Whatever will the skies do without you jumping into them. The young jumper that bought your equipment must have been excited to buy equipment from "Legendary DJan". May she always be safe in the skies and I hope you follow her a bit. Will you have anything at all to do with the Skydiving Club now? I think you and the olde fella should buy a sailboat, eh :) lol

  14. Yes, I was happy with the recent Supreme Court rulings, also.
And it hit 90 degrees here in Hawaii yesterday, a record for the day.

  15. There's hope for us yet!! :) :) I was happily surprised, too.
You have passed the baton...I mean, parachute. The young lady will absorb some of that Djan knees-in-the-breeze good luck.

  16. Great news indeed. And now DJan moves on finding new adventures without jumping out of airplanes!...:)

  17. I was very surprised by the Supreme Court rulings. No more jumping for you. Yes that is quite enough for one week.

  18. Yes it was a big one and luckily, it all went the way it should.
I know how you feel about someone good getting your gear. I know when I sold my bike, I was so happy that it went to someone who would really enjoy her.
Sure hope you cool down soon. You all aren't accustomed to high heat like the rest of us are. You have nice thick blood.

  19. Wow you are ahead of me with paper work.we're stuck in legal stuff to verify Buddy's Down syndrome and need for the trust fund and care givers. POA ?

  20. Speaking of hot....you don't know what hot is. LOL [kidding]
Awww, yes, America moves forward. I for one still think that the Supreme Court Decision was momentous. Of course, the constitution and bill of rights told us that gays can marry long before the ruling...it just boggles my mind that we need a LAW for this to be approved in the first place.

As long as the country moves on without hatred, I'm all for it. Live and Let Live I say. [I have a thought that has been rolling around in my head for a couple of days now, and I'd like to blog about it...but who knows I may just keep it personal and not do a thing about it...in words that is]

It's sad to know that you gave up sky diving...I'm sure you're gonna miss this...but, you WILL keep in touch with all your friends made from this, right? You too can move on and find another NEW interest to broaden your horizons...right?

  21. A momentous week indeed DJan. So many changes for you to adjust to, mostly for the good though. It will take you some time to come to terms with the loss of your sky diving suit and all that goes with it but rather give it up before it gives you up!
We are set for a heatwave over here too, starting tomorrow so no doubt I will be moaning about that very soon.
I hope you get some more water for the creek before the salmon come back.
