First day of fall

Grey skies, muted colors at Lake Padden this morning. It's the first day of fall, and I took this picture right at the equinox, 7:49am as I waited for the other walkers to appear for our 8:00am meeting time. Around twenty of us walked twice around the lake, a total of 5.2 miles. I'm glad to have the cooler weather, but I'm still hoping that the "partly cloudy" forecast for tomorrow will allow me to get a few skydives in.

This morning was the first time I've joined the walking group in a couple of months, since my Saturdays have been filled with blue skies and week after week of being able to spend money at Skydive Snohomish. I just looked at the Harvey Field webcam and see that it's raining at the moment with skies that look similar to those around here. Although only 75 miles separate Bellingham from Snohomish, the weather can be completely different.
As I unlocked my car before leaving Lake Padden, I saw these pretty red berries (not sure of the plant), but they also make me think of the changing season from summer to autumn. Although I'm sure we have plenty of blue sky days ahead of us, today (so far) and yesterday we have not seen the sun or even had any sun breaks.

This afternoon I'm going to visit my Russian friends who have promised me they will have borscht made especially for me (vegetarian). I'm looking forward to it. Now that I have written today's post, I think I'll delve back into the book that is consuming me. It's Isabel Wilkerson's book about the Great Migration of blacks from the South to the North and West of the country. She follows the lives of three people, and although it's not a novel, it reads like one. The book is called The Warmth of Other Suns and I'm truly engrossed.

  3. You seem to find lovely days no matter the weather. And I so appreciate you sharing them photographically.

Frank wants me to learn how to make Borscht. I've never been ultra fond of it but I can learn to like it, I'm sure. Is it not usually devoid of meat?

That book sounds very interesting. I think I'll add it to my must read list. Thanks!

  7. I just made a note of that book. It sounds like something Tom would like. I finished "Quiet", about introverts like me, and have moved on to "Wild", which you recommended, and I'm liking it very much.
We had a few sun breaks this afternoon when I was out walking, and there are some gaps in the clouds to the west. It should stay dry for our sounders match tonight. But it is definitely not summer any longer.

  8. Borscht! I don't know DJan - Maybe it's an acquired taste.

I am also looking forward to fall. Our temps will drop into the 70's!! No changing of the leaves, just a lot of snow birds. Be well.

  16. Very striking photo - just about the same here yesterday and I just happened to take a photo out on St. Andrews Bay, with the fog lightly lifting and dark water surrounding the island. Fog lifted to give us a brilliant afternoon with soaring temperatures and then to top it off - a horrendous rain storm late afternoon. Talk about a mixed up weather day. That is great with the hike twice around the lake and I am thinking about Borchst and must google it to see what exactly is in it. Sounds tempting as I enjoy new tastes. Have a great day.

  17. I bet real Russian-made borscht is delicious. I have made it but I bet there's something in Russian fingers that makes it better than mine was.
I'm glad for the cooler temperatures too: yesterday morning's walk was beeyootiful. I do wish I had a nice levelish lake trail to walk on just for a break from all this up and down, down and up.

  18. I have tasted borscht only once and didn't care for it, but who knows, you might really like it.

I bought the Wilkerson book on my Kindle because you and 2 other people recommended it on my blog yesterday. Looking forward to reading it!

  20. You are so ambitious to walk the lake twice. I'm a once kind of gal. But at least I do it. We are pretty bundled up for our evening walks though now.

  21. I didn't know you are vegetarian- me too, for 20 years. We share a number of interests- vegetarianism, hiking, reading and writing. Cool.

  22. That book sounds like something I'd like to read myself. And as for borscht I've had it once in my life, and didn't like it...I was MUCH younger; I think now I'd like it.

And to me, those gray, wet, heavy skies look downright pretty!!! I want some like that here.

  23. Dear DJan, thanks for the thumbs up about the book you're reading. I'm starting this week one you suggested several months ago: "Finding Serenity in the Age of Anxiety." Peace.

  24. I like the low clouds over the lake. I missed the first day of fall, worked right through it. But that's okay, kitties come first.

Hope you enjoyed the Borscht. I haven't had it since I left Anchorage.
