My edible garden

I didn't know pansies are edible
Yesterday my neighbor Lynn and I took a trip over to Bellingham's Garden Spot Nursery, which is just beginning to ramp up for the spring season. Although there are lots of empty shelves for the new items that will be arriving, I saw this already created edible garden and had to have it. Everything in this pot is good to eat, which surprised me! I didn't know that pansies are edible, but Lynn told me they are a spicy addition to any salad. That's sage in the front and parsley in the back, with lots of other goodies for me to enjoy. For now it's to delight in looking at it, and later maybe I'll partake.

Today it's raining and it will continue for most of the day. I walked to my yoga class and took a couple of pictures of the daffodils I noticed last week. Although they are not as fresh as they were, when I showed SG this picture he said it looks like they are peeking around the corner to see who's coming.
The daffodil Gang of Four
After he said that, it's all I can see when I look at it. Makes me smile; I hope it does the same for you. Everything is blossoming out, and here the first day of March is coming in like a lion (lots of wind and rain), which I hope means it will go out like a lamb. According to Wikipedia, the phrase is credited to a poem by Lorie Hill:

March roars in like a lion
So fierce,
The wind so cold,
It seems to pierce.

The month rolls on
And Spring draws near,
And March goes out
Like a lamb so dear.

Don't you just love the internet? Every bit of information is right there at my fingertips! This is something I didn't know just a few minutes ago. Ain't life grand?
:-)

  1. It sure is. Remember the days when you needed a set of encyclopedia to look things up. We need never like in ignorance of the facts any more. It's too bad there are so many people who don't realize this fact.

  8. Yes you can eat Pansies! Nasturtiums too! Your pot is very nice, and you should probably use some of the stuff in it, just pinch at a node. and it will come in fuller! We cam in lionish too bitterly cold. It was a knee length parka kinda day. Far Guys surgery was today and all went well, we are exhausted ...but happily retired so we can just stay home for a few days to get better:)

  9. I love your garden in a pot! It will be so handy to have right outside to pinch off an addition to your meals. I've had herb pots before but never thought of adding edible flowers for color. Great idea!

  10. I have much appreciated having the world and all its knowledge at my fingerprints....and yes, I still have my edition of Britannica knowledge, which leaves me to believe I have the best of TWO worlds.

  11. I used to get pansies/lettuce in my farm share box. It sure makes a salad look special. Thanks for your visit to my writing blog! Oh, and spring arrived here last weekend. It was almost 60. Of course, we're off to Florida. So Spring can do what ever the heck it wants. Until we come back at least.

  12. Snowing and blowing in Breckenridge today. I won't be taking my walk unless the wind calms - too dangerous in the forest. I like seeing your blooming things.

  13. I know some flowers are edible, but I am still hesitant to eat them. Too paranoid I might eat poison.

  15. Our daffodils are blooming here too. My favorites are the ditch dwellers that thrive in spite of where they live.
Thanks for the info. I may have to try pansies in my next salad. And yes, how did we manage before the Internet? We either shuffled though stacks of books or lived with unanswered questions.

  17. I have to say most days in Hawaii are lamblike. Pansies are edible? Good gracious! I had no idea. I friend used to put chive flowers in salads which made it very pretty.

  18. I love your edible garden! It does look too good to eat though. I've seen pansies on desserts before, but haven't every actually eaten them. The daffodils and other spring flowers aren't blooming here yet. Seeing your pictures of them does put a smile on my face and reminds me that my own daffodils aren't far behind.
