| Why do glasses and frames cost so much? |
Although I only need to make a co-payment to the doctor, I need new frames, and we all know they are very expensive, especially when you want all the bells and whistles (transition and progressive lenses and non-glare coating). It's possible he'll tell me that I might finally qualify for cataract surgery in the eye that has deteriorated the most. I know it's easy these days, but I still am scared of it. It's great when it works, but sometimes things go wrong. I'll put it off as long as I can.

Maybe I'll be surprised at the eye doctor's office and I won't end up spending as much as I think I will. New glasses are always fun in any event. I'm going to pick out the frames before my appointment, since my eyes will be dilated afterwards and there's no telling what I might end up with.

Good luck at the eye doctor's. I haven't gotten new frames in a while... and yes, they're expensive as I get all those things you mentioned (transition, prog, etc.). As for the cataract surgery, I'm supposed to get that this year. And I know it's simple, but still it worries me too.

ReplyDeleteCataract surgery isn't that bad if you have an experienced surgeon. I know quite a few patients who have done well.

ReplyDeleteWe no longer have optical insurance and we both went to the eye doctor this past year. Whew. That cost us a bundle. Terry did not get new frames but new lenses. I got new sunglasses and picked a pricey designer frame. A couple of thousand dollars. We called it our birthday, anniversary, and Christmas gifts.

ReplyDeleteI was supposed to have an eye exam today, but the doctor is sick so I got a call this morning cancelling. It will be two weeks before I can go again. This was to be my second trip to the eye doc in three weeks. I had a clogged gland in my eyelid that got infected and left a bump. During the exam, my eyes watered and caused my focus to change so we couldn't get a good reading. I have been treating the eyelid bump and it is almost gone.
ReplyDeleteOur Group Health medical insurance includes eye care and $150.00 toward eyeglasses every two years. But that will not cover even half of the cost of new glasses. I do not like my current frames, and will be happy to get new ones.
Ugh - yeah it's criminal how much they charge for eyeglasses these days. I have vision insurance, and still it's at least a $400 bill by the time I'm done. And yes, I have distance and reading corrections, plus astigmatism, plus super slim lenses with scratch coat...I feel your pain!
ReplyDeleteDon't have cataract surgery when Mercury is retrograde. Mercury rules the eyes. Mercury retro from April 27/28, depending on where you live in the world, and May 22.
ReplyDeleteWe've been getting our glasses at Costco and it's a lot more inexpensive. Mom's was from Sam's Club and she's been satisfied too.
ReplyDeleteI've heard such wonderful things about cataract surgery. Mom will be needing it soon too, but because of her vein occlusion she's hesitant to get anything else done to her eyes just yet.
Love your kale, by the way. Growing your own garden is so much healthier.
ReplyDeleteSame here, so I drove to the the city and went to Costco to get my new frames and glass with my prescription and saved over $300 dollars. I do believe in supporting local business, but not when they cheat you. No pair of plastic or metal frames in the world are worth what the eye doctor has displayed. Good luck with your appointment DJan. My Mum had both eyes done with cataract surgery and it immensely improved her sight.
ReplyDeleteI hope it went well. I have to have somebody with me to pick out frames because I can't even quite see what I look like. I have been putting off a visit for a long time, too. Cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration run in my family, so I had best get in there this spring. :)
ReplyDeleteThere really aren't many opportunities to keep down the cost of eyeglasses, even just the lenses replaced in your old glasses.
ReplyDeleteSmart move picking out the frames first. Take someone with you for when you try the frames on, you can no longer see that well as they have clear glass. I have gotten burned that way.

ReplyDeleteI have a love/hate relationship with new glasses. I've worn corrective lenses since first grade. However, I can't really tell what the frames look like when I try them on. Sometimes, the hip young gals at the eyeglass places have lead me astray! Bob is having appointments with an eye surgeon for cataract surgery. He's nervous, too!
