Almost gardening time

Rob's in on the right, my neglected spot on the left
A few of the Pinewood Heights gardeners have been busy lately. Not me, though. Rob's section, which is all nicely prepared for planting, is behind that blue bin that is filled with rainwater. Think we've had a little rain lately? Yes! The only things in my section are some white bins, a green watering can, and lots of weeds. Rob makes me look bad.
More rainwater and lots of stuff from last year, plus weeds
Looking across the way from Rob's and my garden areas, however, you can see lots of sticks from Carol's last harvest and a wheelbarrow filled with rainwater. We've got a lot of work to do, but when the sun comes out I get the itch. This will be the fifth year I've planted a garden, with some crops that never fail, and others that never work out. This year I'll stick with cherry tomatoes in case we don't have lots of sunshine, along with strawberries, raspberries (already planted), broccoli, kohlrabi, kale, and some squash.
The center section under Lynn's tutelage
We are very fortunate to have a new gardener, Lynn, who has won awards in the past for her gardens. And earlier this winter this section looked a whole lot more like the above pictures: nothing but weeds before she tackled it. Now, however, it's beginning to look like we will have a wonderful place this summer. I'm actually beginning to feel the urge to get my hands in that soil!

  1. Already? Wow! We have at least another month around here. But I did cut back our cherry tree today -- the first outdoor chore of the new year (you know, other than shoveling snow).

  2. How fortunate that you can grow such a variety. When we've tried to grow strawberries in South Florida, they invariably get eaten by bugs!

  3. Gardening is addictive isn't it? Despite the hard work and the frustrations...

  4. Enjoy!!
I love gardening, and I know that you enjoy it, too.

  5. Prepping the ground can be done now, but you'd better wait until the first of March for even cold weather crops.

  6. That Rob must be bored, if he sees you out there he might stop to help you out..as I can see he is a perfectionist! :)

  7. I have always wished I had a green thumb but it wasn't meant to be. But I do admire folks with community gardens. The work and patience that goes into them is obvious.
I'm sure you'll catch up soon!

  8. Won't be long now until gardening season! Can't wait to see what you grow this year.

  9. It's unbelievable that you would be ale to work soil at this time.Listen to Linda and don't plant until later. Soil has to warm up and the angle of sun much higher.

  10. I can't believe that your garden plot looks like that already! Green grass and dirt and weeds? Ours is still deep in snow, and will be for at least another month around here we wait for June 1st to avoid frost risk, though frost hardy crops can go in before that by a few weeks. When would you plant tomatoes?

  11. I always look forward to seeing how your plants grow, DJan. What fun to be out there with other gardeners and getting helpful hints from them too.

  12. Let's see, for a small space like this I'd have tomatoes, snap peas, onion, carrots, ---veggies for stir fry mostly.

  13. I do love those cherry tomatoes. I am putting another box garden in this year, with the help of my neighbour, but it wont be for a while....like till June with our colder weather and ice and snow. Have a great day.

  14. So am I Djan, if only the weather would co-operate! Lots to do in my garden too. Just waiting for the right day! Like you we've had too much rain and everything is too soggy to work with properly.

  17. Envy you the early start you get. Didn't remember the water barrels from last year. What a great idea. For now I can only flip through the seed catalogs and dream.

  18. Hope that sun shines for you so you can get your hands dirty.

  19. Maybe you could coerce Rob into plowing just a couple of nice clean rows for you. LOL! I've got my first seed catalog and I've been dreaming of fresh lettuce and tomatoes.
