There's a fungi for you

Taken on a winter hike somewhere near Mt Erie
My friend Deb Shuka has challenged me to put up a nature picture on Facebook each day this week, part of someone else's challenge to her, and I agreed to do it. This got me going back through pictures taken in years past, and when I saw this one, I was really surprised. I'd stopped taking pictures of fungi because I thought I had never gotten a good one. Somehow this one didn't measure up before, but today I am thrilled to have found it.

I've also learned that my old Canon PowerShot that was stolen from me four years ago took some really good pictures, like this one and the one below. And I was reminded once again that the iPhone 6 might take good pictures, but it doesn't have salient features like a real zoom. I suppose I could check out add-ons that might give me that ability, but I'll probably just start carrying my camera along in my backpack so that I can take advantage of other options.
Mt Rainier captured from the top of Mt Erie
When I took this picture, I was standing atop Mt. Erie, the highest point on Fidalgo Island, where you can see Mt Rainier on a clear day, or on a day like this one. But I had to use my telephoto all the way out to make it look bigger than a teeny little mound, since it's more than a hundred miles away (118 to be exact). It's been fun going back and perusing my old pictures, and I realize that there is a real benefit to keeping these pictures handy.

So this little exercise that Deb challenged me to has got me all excited about photography again. Maybe I might find a little camera that does it all. Technology changes all the time, and I don't usually have any reason to keep up. It's Christmas, after all, and there are likely to be some deals out there. Right?
:-)

  6. So I can imagine that Santa might bring a camera!!!Buying cameras has become complicated as there's so much out there. Cameras will do much more than your ability to use the camera(at least in my case)

  8. There are a number of good little cameras out there now. My powershot has a great zoom, but not a good macro. I do carry it a lot because it takes good photos and is easy to carry around. I also do a bit of editing with Windows photo to sharpen image, adjust exposure and enhance color. It can make good photos better.

  9. The Panasonic Lumix cameras take very good photos. And they are much smaller than a DSLR. It's fun to revisit old photos isn't it?

  10. I still use my Canon Power Shot I believe we had the same one. SX160IS. And it takes great photos, I use mine in the winter (condensation) and when I don't want to take my big camera. They don't make that camera anymore but tyhere are a few at Canon that are interesting. I like to go to someplace like Best Buy to see the size and feel it in my hand. The SX530 HS was 230 at the Canon site but I don't know how big it is from the photo. I like a camera I can stick in my parka pocket or inside my sweater:)

  11. Oh my goodness!! Extraordinary...both.

And yes, I always have BOTH with me when birding...sometimes you really need a camera...other times you need to have a zoom lens that creates SHARP, more defined textures, that a cellphone/iPhone does not show.

  13. I prefer my Canon to my cellphone -- more options, easier to handle. But I've never gotten a photo as dramatic as your shot of Mt Rainier!

  15. I still like my little point and shoot. Then seeing the work many world class amateur photographers put on their blog convinced me to be content with my own puny efforts...:)
