Ebey’s Landing is the nation’s first historical reserve, created in 1978 to protect a rural working landscape and community on Central Whidbey Island. The reserve contains 17,500 acres, 18 working farms, 400 historical structures, native prairies, two state parks, miles of shoreline, a network of trails and the second oldest town in Washington. After we parked, we headed up a bluff to a wonderful overlook of the area: on a clear day, one can look west to the Olympic Peninsula and the Strait of Juan de Fuca; south to Mt. Rainier: and east over historic farmland and prairie to the Cascades. We hiked a few miles along the bluff and then we headed down to the beach.
The day started in Bellingham without a cloud in the sky, but as we headed south, the clouds built and we even had some sprinkles while in our cars. Not sure what the conditions would be for the day, we took everything with us when we started the hike. But the day got more and more clear, and by the time we stopped for lunch, we had more sun than clouds.
We had lunch on the beach, and some of us headed back up to the top of the sand dunes (since the sun had come out and pictures were beckoning), and others walked along the paradise to beachcomb and peruse all those wonderful rocks!
After we got back to the cars, we had an impromptu birthday party for Karen (with a birthday cake and candles, compliments of Amy) before we headed back home. It was a wonderful unforgettable day. I myself was assailed with memories of other times I have walked along the beach and smelled those smells, other times I've listened to the gentle crashing of the surf, and warmed myself in the rays of the sea-level sun. It was a great day, and now I'm ready to relax as soon as I post this!
:-)
It looks gorgeous! I am so glad you had such a lovely day!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you had a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful place to spend a day !
ReplyDeleteThe views are awesome. You are very fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, and that you are able to spend time with friends enjoying it.
Thank you for sharing with us landlocked souls ;)
Such beautiful scenery! How lucky you are to belong to such an active group! Glad you had a nice day!
ReplyDeleteSheesh...I sure miss the west coast....thanks for taking me along on these trips with you...
ReplyDeleteYou are one lucky duck, Miss DJan !!
Your group always finds the most wonderful places to spend a day. That beach looks like fun, I would have been one of the beachcombers. I'm glad the weather cleared for the hike.
ReplyDeleteThe mountains in my photo were the Blues, our little range on this side of the Cascades. Not as big as those you hike but aren't they pretty.
Wow what beautiful shots !! Simply amazing !!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful scenery. Must have been a fabulous hike.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been a nice little change to hike along the beach. Amazing photos, of course. It's great that ya'll ran across everything form overcast to sunny. It must have made for a more interesting hike.
ReplyDeleteLiving in Hawaii, I love being so close to the ocean. People think it strange that I don't get tired of living on an island. But, truly, I would feel claustrophobic if I were landlocked in the middle of the USA.
ReplyDeleteWhat else do you do for a hobby? I would think you might like to sit on the beach and put your toes in the water. LOL
ReplyDeleteYou are a hiker if I ever read about one. Nice post. Enjoyed the photos.
What a lovely place. You are having so much enjoyment out of life. You are an inspiration.
ReplyDeleteI can't think of a more perfect place to have a birthday celebration. Those water views are awesome.
ReplyDeleteGreat hike again today..thanks for sharing! :)
