It's still December (barely)

Solstice snow

A week ago today, we got some snow, the first we've seen here in more than a year. I don't think we had any lowland snow last year, and this one was a surprise: we weren't expecting to get anything out of this northern blast, but we got about a foot of snow, depending on where in the area you live. It was actually pretty delightful, since I didn't need to go anywhere, and I could just enjoy it.

Today, after some fog, we will have sunshine for most of the day, and the temperature is expected to be above freezing. Not exactly balmy, but definitely great for a nice walk in the sun. We don't do much celebrating for the holidays, but I did visit my friend Lily to watch the new Wonder Woman movie with her on Christmas. With all the windows open and keeping socially distanced, it was a delightful way to spend the day. And then I went home to my very own Grinch (he only said "bah humbug" a few times) to enjoy the rest of the day.

I was dismayed to see how many people actually traveled over the Christmas holiday, with the TV showing packed airports and full flights. It will undoubtedly lead to more infections, and I'm truly frightened about how awful this is for our health care workers. Not only are they already overwhelmed, but if it gets worse, they will be unable to give adequate care to their patients, through no fault of their own.

I saw a sign on TV held by an unmasked man that said, "Selfish and Proud." I never thought the day would come when I would say, "What is this world coming to?" But I wonder, I really do, especially about my beloved country.

  1. Dear friend this post makes me both glad and sad. Snow? How beautiful. A pleasant holiday season with your friend and your very own Grinch (love that term) - wonderful.
Selfishness being something to be proud of? Huge sigh. And sadly he is not alone.

  2. Sounds like an enjoyable Christmas despite all the restrictions. Like you, I don't understand the selfish behaviour of others.

  3. The snow I do envy and am glad you got such a nice one. As for that creep, I just shake my head in wonder and disbelief. What is wrong with people? Hopefully when their role model is out of office, maybe the license to be a jerk will fade.

  4. I am beginning to realize that people aren't different, better or worse than they have always been. We've always had people like the jerk with the sign, but now, with all of the different ways to connect via media, we see all of it, the good and the bad. We just have to hold up the good and diminish the bad.
As for snow, we had a bit of slushy stuff, but then it got cold and hung around on the roof tops and the shady parts of lawns. It was rather nice.

  5. When we were first married Bud used to say "Christmas is just another day". He grew up with Grinches...until he celebrated Christmas at my folks with 30 relatives & guests...he changed his mind overnight! Your hubby sounds like Bud many years ago. You can have the snow, thank you very much (now who's bah humbugging?)

  7. A foot of snow for you guys is nuts! I hope it melts quickly. I'm with you on these fools. What are they thinking? Yes, I think we are in for a good big increase in cases.

  8. We too had a white Christmas, I mean it was something right out of "A Christmas Story". It began Christmas Eve around 10pm, and by morning... Anyway, had a chuckle over your smart grinch's humbugs and yes, seeing all those travelers on the news was awful. That "selfish" sign... what a slap in the face to healthcare workers & people who have lost someone to covid. Anyway, Happy New Year (hopefully) DJan.

  9. Like you, it also makes me sad to see people so selfish and uncaring gathering/flying to be with relatives over Christmas. They may not know it yet, but some of them have sickened or killed their parents, grandparents, siblings, etc. And it is true that social media brings it all out -- one of the worse things about this pandemic/Trump-era/economic catastrophe is finding out that people you may have called your friends and neighbors are so uncaring and ignorant.

  10. What a pretty sight from your window! All that snow. Lovely. My husband wants to see Wonder Woman.

  11. I only saw snow once - in Narita, Japan, while walking in the town. It was so beautiful, falling like petals and landing on rooflines like frosting on a cake.
Our Christmas here is warm weather and green everywhere. And yet, one of the prettiest songs that people like to sing is White Christmas.

  12. No snow here, DJan... beautiful day! As for the man with the selfish sign, it does make you realize that there are many out there who just don't care. Sad... for them and for our world.
We watched "Soul" on Disney+ yesterday. Interesting movie for Disney...

  13. We're having a winter storm here for a couple of days--just steady snow and gusts. Our white Christmas came late but I am glad to see it. The partridges have something to dig down into with those little legs to make their hole-nests to hunker down against the wind. Makes me happy to see them warmer. :)

The "Selfish and Proud" sign...appalling! They've always been there but these past few years, by example, they have been given permission to have no shame...to boast instead. Hard to watch, yes.

  14. You got snow? We had a little in Puyallup, but you're much closer to Canada than we are. I was supposed to travel in December to New York to spend the holidays with my 7 month old grandson, daughter and husband. I cancelled my trip. So, seeing all those selfish people traveling makes me particularly furious and resentful. We are ALL paying for their thoughtlessness.

  15. The unmasked remind me of my kids when they were in middle school -- they rebelled for the sake of rebelling, whether it made any sense or not. So to the unmasked I simply say: Grow up!

  16. Selfish and proud? What the heck is going on? Locals are quite upset here in Hawaii because so many tourists are walking around unmasked. Uncaring. We’ve worked so hard to keep our numbers down so tourists can come to help our economy, but they have not shown the same aloha.
