Peeking inside their homes

Nice kitchen
It's been so interesting to see the homes of the people I usually see in studio settings, and they all tell a different story of who they are. Claire McCaskill is always in her kitchen, and I noticed right away that all her plates seem to be homemade, not stacking up perfectly, and that there's no way to keep these dishes from getting dusty. Makes for plenty of work for somebody; I wonder if she has a housekeeper. Probably. If you look online, you can see the rest of her lovely kitchen, but this is where she always stands for the camera.

I noticed my guy standing close to the TV one day, with his head cocked to one side. He was reading, or trying to read, the titles of the books on shelves behind some anchor or another. Then I started looking myself. This guy, a Princeton scholar, rearranges his books periodically, so I realize he knows there are lots of people like me who are interested in what people are reading.

The other thing that interests me are the number of people I admire who have pets. I got hooked on looking for the cat in William Brangham's home. The black cat is almost always in the same place on the couch, so when I noticed he was gone one day, I realized how much I missed seeing him. And often meteorologists working from home have dogs that ham it up in front of the camera, which always gives me a chance to smile.

Peeking into the homes of media celebrities has become a "thing." It's more fun than listening to the news, for sure!

  1. You obviously watch much more interesting news than I do. Of course I tend to listen more than watch, even on TV.

  2. Pets and books are MUCH more to my taste than the news as well. At any time, and particularly now.

  3. I agree with you about being fascinated by other people's homes during these strange times.

  5. At this time of lock down we get to see different things. who'd have thought that he kitchen would become a studio?

  6. It is interesting, DJan, to see inside their homes... more interesting than the studios. Our weatherman has dogs that are always laying behind him... and the weather woman has at least 3 cats! Didn’t know that before...

  7. I am missing out. Some of our extended family share daily selfies (as you know) but we are not doing live video or chat or whatever. Apparently,I am missing out. 🤓

  8. I am enjoying it around here, with our local news celebrities. Most are not wearing much make-up and I've often wondered what they're wearing below the tv screen that we can't see. Now, I would LOVE going thru his library!

  9. I have thought it was interesting, too, to see a bit of the homelife of TV folk. Since I don't have regular TV and only internet I don't get to see as many as you do but I notice a lot of people film before bookcases. ;) I am fascinated by her handmade dinnerware!

  10. I commend you for being a MSNBC watcher! Yes -- I too love the peeks into the pundit and hosts homes. Stephanie Ruhle (via instagram) and Katy Tur have also shown their homes and broadcasting offices.

    watch MSNBC.

  12. I do enjoy peeking in also. Pets must be part of the weather person's home life. My weather girl has an adorable little poodle that lays like a throw pillow on the couch behind her. She was missing one day and caused a stir.

  14. Our local weatherman is at home with his dog Pedro, sometimes they go on adventures! He also has a daily facebook weather segment for kids:) I haven't watched the news for a few day...sticking my head in the sand. :)

  15. A local personality broadcasts from her kids' playroom and mentioned that her mother texted her after a broadcast and said she should clean it. Another reporter got comments on his huge TV screen and on the fact that he was interviewing someone online while barefoot. My online Barre instructor has a cat named Biscuit that loves to wander in and flop in front of the camera. I love it.

  16. I also am interested in the books although I don't read as much as I used to! The other thing I notice are the choices of art.

  17. Hmmm... That’s very interesting. So far, our news people are all at the station so we don’t get to see their homes. That would be very interesting if they did work from home though.

  18. I’ve been watching Trevor Noah’s shows from his home which doesn’t show just how luxurious it actually is.

  19. I've been peeking as well . . . not into the homes of celebrities but into the homes of my friends and family on Zoom. Uh, suffice it to say that my friends and family are not as educated and sophisticated as Mr. Glaude.

  20. I'm really interested in what other's are reading. I often jot down titles that might appeal to me. I haven't been watching much tv except for shows we record. News not at all!

  21. Dear DJan, I just finished listening to the PBS Newshour for Monday, May 11. (It's on from 6-7 PM CDT here in Independence.) Then, Judy Woodruff announced that they'd put together some photographs of the Newshour pets! So I started to watch--using my eyes! You mentioned William Brangham in this posting and sure enough we met his 3 cats and the dog with whom he lives. I so hope that you will be watching the program tonight and that this segment will air on the West Coast. So many, many of those who work on the Newshour live with animal companions! Peace.
