Coffeemaker for home use

French press
Several readers wondered why I don't make coffee at home, and I figured I should tell you the truth:  I really like GOOD coffee, and those usual drip coffee makers don't do a very good job. Plus, I like the social aspect of having a cup or two with friends. My usual order is a "shot in the dark," coffee with a shot of espresso.

We've now got a French press coffee maker. It actually turns out that I must have bought it years and years ago, and when I suggested to SG that we get one, he paused for a moment and looked thoughtful. Then he rummaged around in our cabinets and pulled out a Bodum french press that looked vaguely familiar. It's never been used, and had all the instructions inside to tell me how to use it.

I think I bought it because I had been served some coffee at someone's home, made with a french press, and I liked it very much. But then after the purchase sat on the counter for awhile as I continued to go out for coffee, it disappeared from sight and, obviously, out of mind.

Today I bought some coarse grind coffee and tomorrow I'll give it a try. I think it's more like espresso (which I prefer to drip), and the coffee I bought is a local Bellingham blend. Just today our governor announced that all bars and restaurants will close for at least several weeks. He didn't say anything about coffee shops, but now I'm all set for the foreseeable future.

  2. The Gov added to the list and coffee shops are now on it, along with ice cream parlors and wine tasting rooms and barber shops and beauty salons (some of us are going to get pretty shaggy before this is over) and just about everything else. Take out and drive through service are still OK but no social lingering.
I just got an email from Kaiser Permanente and it looks like my scheduled echo cardiogram will be cancelled. Only urgent procedures and surgeries for now.
I'm feeling quite restricted, but at least it's better than being sick.
    Enjoy your coffee.

  3. Have to be prepared! Can't do this without coffee!

  4. I too like really, really good coffee. I seldom drink coffee away from home because few places can make it as good as I like. Terry buys our coffee and he always gets the darkest roast. There are brands he won't even consider as they don't have the ability to dark roast their beans.

We have a drip coffee maker and it does a great job, but as I wrote, it all begins with really good coffee beans.

  5. We have one of those in the cupboard somewhere. Himself prefers his espresso maker, and I drink tea.
Stay safe. We are not nearly as advanced on the 'shut-down' front and I suspect as an introvert I will handle it better than extroverts like yourself. Holding you in my heart.

  6. You should be able to give it a thorough trial.

  7. Slowly everything is closing around us too. Maybe we should just rip off the bandaid and close everything down like China and Italy.

  8. Funny how some things get lost in our house. The micro manager remembers everything. Me? I forget most things. Keep well.

  9. That's great! I hope it lives up to your expectations. I'm not particular about my coffee, but Art definitely is so he makes the coffee at our house. Please stay safe, DJan.

  10. Far Guy has a Keurig and he likes it very much! It makes a great Hot Chocolate! I had a French Press once upon a time never used it and sold it at a garage sale:)

  11. Success. I may not have a hoard of food (or tp) but I do have lots of coffee. It's the little things.

  12. I've never used a French Press but I've heard good things about them. Let us know how you like it. Our area has closed all restuarants, bars, libraries, gyms, etc. etc. My Granddaughter is a barista so she is now at least temporarily out of work. This will be hard on a lot of people.

  13. Starbucks is closed here (and as of today no virus). I don't drink coffee but Bud does & he has a French press.

  14. Now you can have fun experimenting till you get just right. If you can just figure out how to make a face time conference call you can still meet with your friends as you have your morning coffee. Almost as good.
    Stay safe.

  15. Those were a big item a few years ago. I remember getting one for my son for Christmas -- he, like you, is a coffee connoisseur and will only get it at his favorite place. Me? I'm a philistine. I drink instant.

  16. That looks like a very nice coffee maker. I love the aroma of coffee, but it keeps me too wired to drink. Alas.

  17. I like very good coffee, too. Grind the beans and I do pour over coffee. Enjoy! You will get better with the french press as you use it. Pretty soon you will know just the right amount to put in and it will be delicious! ;) Can't go without my coffee, either. :)

  18. We love our coffee here too... although I drink tea (with cream) also. We have an old Grind and Brew drip coffee maker, a French press, a Nespresso, and a Keurig! And it’s true that we may not have enough staples to get by past 2 weeks, but we do have coffee!

  19. We are all closed down here in CO. I used to have a french press but gave it to my son who roasts his own coffee. I first got one after visiting New Zealand many years ago and falling in love with their french press. Stay well!

  20. I'd get no use for it, since I dislike coffee.

I really appreciate your comments! If you see a word verification box here, just ignore it. I don't use the darn thing and Blogger is trying to get us to use it, I guess. Ignore it and your comment will still appear.
