Home today, no hike, but pictures anyway

Peggy, Ward, Linda, Mike, Ellen, Al, Rich (and Melanie took the picture)
My phone buzzed and told me I got some pictures from Melanie, with a text that they are missing me (and probably missing my brownies, too). I recognize the places from this British Army Trail hike that I'm not on, one we have mostly done it in the rain. I typed in "Lizard Lake" in the search box in the sidebar and realize that it's been very rare for us to have sun on this one. They don't have it here, either, but I think it took awhile before the rain started up. I sure missed being there with my friends.

But I've discovered a couple things about my hip injury: it's not the new shoes, because every pair of shoes I've tried as I've walked some each day made no difference: still pain when I try to walk too fast, with what feels like an ice pick stabbing into my right butt cheek. A squeal of pain and then I slow down. But every morning when I first start my day I'm convinced it's completely healed (it's not). Time will tell but you know how impatient I am. An impatient patient.
Interesting tree roots, eh?
Since Melanie took these pictures, she saw things I've missed in past excursions on this hike. Isn't this amazing? It almost doesn't look real, but I know it's a second tree growing out of the remains of a nurse log. Those roots make it look like the tree could just take off and walk along with the hikers.
A beautiful shelf fungus
And this pretty fungus, which I think is actually pretty large, when I look at the branches in the foreground, I can see why she snapped this one. Plenty of snow still on the ground, too, which I also noticed in that first picture at Lizard Lake. The lake also seems pretty frozen still, too, from this picture.
Lizard Lake (I think)
At first I thought this might be part of the trail, but on second look I decided it's probably the still-frozen lake, but I could be wrong. In any event, in the higher terrain around here it's still not springtime yet. No signs of an early spring up there. But I am sure glad that Melanie was able to send me these pictures so I could show you what I missed today. There were eight Senior Trailblazers, and I know from past trips that they covered around eight or nine miles and 2,000 feet of elevation gain and loss. I sure would have been able to rack up the steps for the week, but instead I have been lucky to just make it to 10,000 steps by early afternoon.

If I'm good and don't push too much, I should be able to make next week's hike! For the moment, I am happy to be slowly improving.
:-)

  3. It's good that they included you as best they could. Our walks are only 3.35 miles each day, but we did get one in today with only occasional light showers.
10,000 steps is a lot for someone trying to heal.

  5. Take it easy with the hip and get somebody to check it just in case there's something they can do.

  6. Sounds like an IT band problem. I just suffered from it as well. I started hiking with an IT band strap and it helped so well I'm pain free now and able to hike without it. Another great but painful thing to do is to sit on a tennis ball right where it hurts, I know ouch right??!! but it really does work Hope it heals soon, I know you're itching to be on the trails again. Take care, Kim

  8. How wonderful that they sent you photos! I am sure if you behave yourself you will be out there next week! That was one wonderful photo of the tree! :)

  9. Aww, you do have sweet friends to take you vicariously with them. I am like Linda R though. 10,000 steps is a lot if you are trying to heal. Maybe a pinched nerve?? If not better soon I hope you will see a doctor.

  10. I am glad you have nice photos of the hike. If your pain does not disappear soon, you should have it X-rayed to see how bad it is.

  11. So nice of them to send pictures! I'm glad you are testing out the hip, though. I'm sure the massage and yoga you do will tell you some more, too. :)

  12. The joys of ageing . Minor aches and pains linger on and become debilitating. At 76 I seem to accumulate more and more. Our motto here these days is "We're and team" and "Keep on trukin.." :)

  13. Just catching up on your posts. Sorry to hear about your hip. Maybe you'll have to give up on the step count for a few days until you have it sorted, rather than do more damage. We have to look after ourselves at our age!

  14. Hello dear one. I've played some catchup reading your multiple posts that I've missed this past week. I haven't been home for much online time, but today I'm determined to visit. Oh, I have those aches, limping, and back pain all the time....that is one reason I keep the minimum step count for three days a week. Trying not to overdo which is easily done when I'm not paying attention to the amount of time walking. And here too, it's not the shoes or the walk, it's the time out walking! I've learned to take things much slower and just enjoy what I can. The snow is pretty, but I'm glad I'm no longer in that kinda environment. And she took some beautiful images....I enjoyed the last three posts I've skimmed through this morning...and hope that you will recover fully sooner than later.

  15. I'm surprised at how cold it looks out there ... it's been warm here in the east. Take care of yourself and don't slip on the ice!

  16. It's wonderful that your friends are taking you with them on the hike in spirit. That's an amazing tree with all those roots. The hip pain is really worrisome.
