A fine way to start the weekend

Sunrise at Lake Padden

A dozen or so of us ladies met at Lake Padden for our Saturday loop twice around the lake. I had heard that recently the lake had completely frozen over, and that people were out walking and skating on it. If you look closely at that picture, you can see there is still some ice in the foreground of the lake, but the ducks and geese were in some open areas. Recently we had such a cold snap that many of our small lakes froze right up. I found some pictures on Facebook to prove it.

I even heard this morning about someone out there with a baby stroller, pushing his little one around on the ice. Frankly, I don't think it was such a good idea, but apparently the ice was solid enough that nobody fell through. In fact, the picture below made me laugh.
Ice hockey
Yes, some of these guys must have grown up around Minnesota and hauled out their gear in nostalgia for those other places in our country where they might have lived. Or maybe there really are ice hockey teams around here somewhere? In any event, Lake Padden no longer frozen all the way across. Although it was cold this morning, right around freezing, in comparison to these pictures, it was balmy.

  1. Oh how pretty. And as we swelter again, how blissfully cool.
Have a wonderful weekend dear DJan.

  2. Love the pictures! I'm not a fan of walking on frozen lakes, ponds or seas. I'd rather walk around the lake like you did.

  3. There are ice hockey teams around the area, any place where there is an ice skating rink. It would make me nervous to see them out there, however.
We enjoyed the mild weather today too, with a destination walk on the Soos Creek Trail. I think a weather change is coming tomorrow.

  4. Clear ice without snow cover is great stuff to skate and play hockey on. One does have to be careful or you can get wet.

  5. There's an indoor ice skating rink here in Hawaii, right down the street from where I live. It's quite popular, and I have hosted my kids' birthday parties there.

  6. A baby stroller? On the ice that may or may not be frozen thick enough? What are people thinking?

  7. Can't believe someone would take a buggy on the ice.

  8. You have several Hockey Groups in your area. There is a Whatcome County Hockey Association (The Whatcome Warriors) and The Bellingham Sportsplex Hockey Academy!!
That ice looks perfect for skating and as long as they were not in deep water why not enjoy it! :)

  9. Loved that first shot. Such a peaceful scene. I grew up on a lake and we never went out on the ice till a parent chopped a hole to see how thick it was. Pretty sure I wouldn't take a child out in a buggy.

  11. Ooh no, I agree with you, not a good idea to take a baby buggy out on the ice. No way! The ice does look pretty though, doesn't it and I know from my family in Holland that they were skating on the canals over there recently.

  12. Oh my! I'm glad no one fell through the ice. I'd be nervous and stay close to the edge just in case. This looks like a really cold day for a walk or hike.
