A mostly quiet Fourth

Look at all that green
Usually I go to a potluck on the Fourth with the ladies that I walk with on Saturdays, but this year Cindy, our leader, is getting ready for an international trip, so she decided to skip it. Instead, we had a nice seven-mile walk along the Arroyo Park trail, a place I'm very familiar with from the winter hikes with the Senior Trailblazers.

It sprinkled on us a little, but nobody minded. We really enjoyed chatting and walking together and everybody was prepared for the conditions, which were so much better than they could have been. No real rain and even the occasional sun break. Afterwards, since all the coffee shops were full to overflowing, we got coffee to go and sat on the steps at the Village Green before heading off to our various holiday activities.

I had a wonderful quiet dinner at home, with no real desire to head down to the waterfront to watch the fireworks. Instead, I settled in with a good book and also spent some time chatting with SG before the fireworks started. I sure do feel for the animals that don't know what's going on and think the world is ending! The booms and whistling rockets went on until late, but somehow or other I managed to fall asleep anyway and woke to blissful silence this morning.

And other than my schedule being off by one day, everything is back to normal. I went to the gym and worked out with my usual enjoyment. Then it was time to catch the bus home and sit here and write a blog post before getting back to that book. (It's a sci-fi novel by Michael Swanwick.) I hope you had a good holiday and enjoyed your day as much as I did mine.
:-)

  1. I am so glad that you had a delightful day. After a mere seven mile walk.
    Hugs.

  2. Ours was very quiet too - in fact, I spent the majority of the long weekend on the back porch reading. After losing the internet for so long, I'm reminded about how nice it is to sit and read an actual book, especially if it's a good one! Have a great week, my friend!

  3. It sounds like a lovely day, with a hike and friends as a start. Glad you had such a great day.

  4. thankfully, we had gotten rain early the morning of the 4th so the fire calls were kept to a minimum last night, although we still got plenty of grumpy folks calling to complain about fireworks going off. *sigh*

  5. I did have a good day but my cat didn't. She came out of hiding this morning, only to have more explosions go off nearby and send her scurrying back to her safe place. BYW, fireworks are illegal here :-)

  6. Mine was quiet like yours but thankfully, involved a hike. Town is a zoo. I live in a beautiful place that everyone wants to visit!

  7. Sounds like a good day for you! We were quiet here too except for the fireworks down at the lake. WE went to the parade in the late afternoon:)

  8. There are many different great ways to observe the Fourth of July. You enjoyed yours.

  9. Hi Djan! Sounds like a good way to spend the 4th to me. We basically stayed home and had a quiet day also after our annual neighborhood 4th of July parade in the morning. Kids were going to a movie and then fireworks later - but we opted out for a quiet day.

  10. I hiked the day before, so on the 4th, I just stayed home and enjoyed a day off work. But our neighborhood was far from quiet....I nicknamed it "Little Beirut" with all the fireworks going off. Ugh!

  11. I hear there were lots of fireworks at home, as usual, but here in Bend it was fairly quiet. So many years of gathering with family and friends to watch - now we're content to remember.

  12. So, your ankle was okay then?

We didn't have as many fireworks in our neighborhood like we usually do...dunno why. But, no complaints from me.

  14. Was a lot quieter here on the 4th but I'm not sure if that was because of the weather or not. I didn't even open the blinds to see if it was raining. Very quiet for us--which Karma greatly appreciated. At the old apartment people were always setting off fireworks and firecrackers in the parking lot. I started reading Rules of Prey by John Sandford. :)

  15. A perfect way to celebrate in such good company. I feel very envious reading about your hikes. I am still injured and have been told not to go hiking although I can walk on the flat. Really missing my weekly rambles.

  16. That sounds like my kind of hike where you aren't obsessed with your foot placement and can enjoy conversation with friends.
I too feel for the animals that are frightened of fireworks and loud noises. I had a small dog like that once and there was no consoling her. For her it was pure terror.

  17. Sounds like you had a great day. David watched the fireworks on TV, while I headed to bed.

  18. Indeed. We also had a mostly quiet day at home with a short dog walk and later a good book...;)

  19. The dogs in our neighborhood spent the 4th hiding from fireworks!
