News from near and far

Chris and Rich on the Camino
I snagged this picture off Chris' Facebook page, of the two of them walking the Camino in Spain.(They are two of the Senior Trailblazers.)  I just saw that they have arrived in Santiago de Compostela, after walking 500 miles in 34 days. Now that's an accomplishment! I am sure I will hear plenty of their adventures when they get back to Bellingham. I have to say I really love being able to keep in touch with my friends and family on Facebook as they go on their journeys.
Beginning broccoli and salad greens
That was the news from far away, and here's the news from right here in my backyard. The broccoli is already on its way to my kitchen a few weeks from now, and those huge broccoli leaves are also very tasty when steamed. I could pick them now, but instead I'll harvest those pretty (and spicy) salad fixings.

I realize that the garden is not all that exciting when compared to Chris and Rich's adventure, but to me it's rather amazing that I've become a gardener at all!

  1. Walking the Camino sounds great, but if I was going to do it I should have done it years ago. As for gardening, there is nothing better than fresh from the garden pickings. Picked our first strawberries yesterday!

  2. I cannot imagine walking that far. Wow.

As for your broccoli, it looks very good.

Enjoy your salad. I have never had spicy salads so wonder how spicy is spicy. Maybe you can explain.

  3. That is more than 15 miles a day! There must have been places to stay along the route...what an adventure!
My x brother in law has hiked to Manchu Picchu in Peru and then other hikes in Columbia and Ecuador...he is very adventurous I really enjoy visiting those places through his eyes. He goes places I would never dream of visiting!
Your gardening talents are great, you can do anything if you put your mind to it. :)

  6. A friend of mine walked the Camino a few years ago. An amazing thing. Something I would love to have known about when I was more mobile.
And the magic of your garden is also special. Very special. Home grown anything has a joy all of its own.

  11. Now my dear....an accomplished gardener is just as 'fruitful' as walking a foreign land!! Different, but still it's a good life either way.

  12. This is a really great adventure for Chris and Rich. I always loved Spain and when living in England I could pop over quite often. While studying nursing, I taught "Spanish People" (olde and young) to speak english in return for board and food on my summers off. Aah, those were the days my friend, those were the days :)
Love your garden and I have also begun mine finally. Have a wonderful day DJan.

I have grown broccoli but never tried the leaves. See what you can learn by blogging?

  17. Congrats to Chris and Rich ... quite an accomplishment. My sister and her husband did about 100+ miles of the Camino two years ago; they're going back for more later this summer -- thanks to my sister's new knees.

  18. There's a Road Scholar (used to be Elderhostel) trip that includes selected parts of the Camino (4 to 8 miles a day, it says), with comfort at meals and nights. I'm thinking about signing up next year.

    Hurray for the gardens!

  21. I would like to walk the Camino. There is a fine movie titled The Way, starring Martin Sheen walking the Camino. It is fiction but seems like a documentary. He meets an odd assortment of characters along the way, and his son, Emilio Estevez, created the film with his father in mind as the lead actor.

  22. I used to love facebook for family sharing but now find the younger crowd uses it for all sorts of social media interaction so it gets crowded with maps and adds and places that want to sell.
