Life's little interruptions

Hilda, our superb RN
Well, now that it's in the past, I think I can share what the little "minor interruption" I mentioned in my last post was all about. While I was finishing up the post mid-afternoon Saturday, I learned that Smart Guy had experienced some vertigo and broke out in a sweat. After calling our doctor's office and ascertaining that a visit to the Emergency Room was in order, we spent the next four hours there, having all kinds of tests run. Hilda checked us in and monitored our progress during that time. The doctor ruled out several possible causes and put him on an antibiotic, determining that a sinus or inner-ear infection was the likely cause of the vertigo.

It's three days later and he hasn't had another episode, and in general is feeling much, much better. It was very reassuring to learn that our emergency care is so good. Within an hour after it happened, he had had an EKG, blood drawn, a chest x-ray, and was on his way to get a CT scan of his head, when I left to go back home to get my book and some sustenance. By the time I returned, he was getting ready to be discharged, with anti-vertigo medication and a prescription for an antibiotic.

We bonded with Hilda and learned that Saturday was her very last day on the job, as she is retiring and looking forward to the next chapter in her life. We all three felt it was very fortuitous to have met each other, and I commented on the quality of the care we received. Hilda said it is the best place she has ever worked! In five years of being here in Bellingham, this is the first time we've needed to take advantage of the emergency care, and now I'm reassured that we are indeed in the right place for our golden years.

And in a few minutes I'm off to the movies with my friend Judy to see The Dallas Buyers Club. It's gotten rave reviews, and my sister saw it and said I simply have to see it, so I am happy to oblige. This is the season when we've got tons of good movies to see. I guess they wait until the holiday season to release them, partly because they will be uppermost in the mind of the audience when the Oscar nominees are chosen. That's what I think, anyway. There are numerous good movies that I'd like to see. I'll let you know what I think of this one.
:-)

  5. It is a comfort to be close to outstanding medical care. We feel very fortunate to have been able to count on the Mayo Clinic less than a half hour away.

  7. Good grief! That was scary! Art had a case of vertigo like that about 8 years ago. He even ended up losing his lunch. It was the most bizarre thing. He got a whole battery of tests including brain scans. Things turned out normal and the doctors called it a "head scratcher". He's not had en episode since so that's reassuring. I hope it will be the same for your smart guy. It's good you got him to the ER quickly. Your nurse is an angel. I do love nurses.
I'll be waiting it hear about the movie.

  8. I'm very relived to hear that it was not deemed serious. Maybe you were just meant to meet Hilda. And perhaps your paths will cross again - in a different way, of course.

It's also good to feel confident that you've settled where health care is good. I wonder about our new locality but hope we don't have to find out a hard way.

Enjoy the movie.. I'm sure you will.

  15. With those symptoms you did the right thing to go directly to the emergency. You never know if it could end up being more serious. It wasn't terribly serious so great. I hope he will not have any more problems.

  16. With the media broadcasting so many negative health care stories lately, it's great to here a good one. I'm happy to hear that Smart Guy is not suffering any ill effects of that episode. And what a relief to know you have a health care system that will be ready to handle whatever comes along.
I too will be interested in your movie review.

  17. I'm glad to hear Smart Guy is doing fine. It's good to have medical services close by that you can depend on. Hilda sounds like a very special, caring lady.

We woke up to snow this morning. Our temps are dropping. It was 14 degrees last time I looked.

    Hope you enjoyed the movie.

  18. You are most fortunate to have SG checked out and on proper medication for "head scratcher"??, wheatever caused the problem. Inner ear infections or infections in the sinus area are capable of these symptoms - anyway, good to hear he is much better. Hope you enjoy your movie :)

  19. Isn't it scary to get older? Every once in a while we have these events, rush to the doctor to see what's wrong ... and then hopefully find out it's just a false alarm (in the sense it's something minor, not major). But what gets me is that people incessantly complain about our health care; and yet when we actually go to the doctor or the hospital or the ER, we almost always have a very positive experience. Anyway ... glad everything worked out for you.

  22. I'm so glad Smart Guy is ok!
Our neighbor has experienced a couple of bouts of vertigo over the years, and it sounds just awful.
    Good nurses are so wonderful.
I wish Hilda a happy retirement!

  23. Wow....I'm happy t'read that it was 'only an ear infection'. It could have been much worse. And VERY happy to know that he's on his way feeling better. That's scary.

Can't wait to read your review of the movie DJan. I always respect your critiques. Very much so.

Hey, as I once again looked at you in your purple as your blog loaded, I think I've asked this before but I don't recall for sure. But, I've long been wondering just how you became an avid jumper? Was this taking place in Colorado when you worked, or is it a new thing since moving to WA.? Inquiring minds wanna know. And perhaps the story, if not posted before, would be some Blog Fodder?

  24. Let's hope that Smart Guy continues to improve D-Jan. Ears can cause vertigo very easily, can't they. How nice that you had such excellent service at the Emergency Room.

I already had that movie in my queue, too. ;)
