Battening down the hatches

From Climate Prediction Center
It looks like the majority of the country has got some cold weather a-comin' our way. The dark blue shows an 80% confidence level in the forecast that the weather will be colder than normal for the next week or so. My sister who lives in Florida will be having warmer than normal. I guess I should have made that plane reservation, but for now I'm staying home, battening down the hatches, and expecting to have temperatures 10–20 degrees F below normal. My hike next Thursday will be FRIGID, with the high for the day not getting close to freezing. We've done it before, but last winter never had any days this cold, if I'm not mistaken. I'll be ready.
Pretty blue skies
Yesterday five of us Trailblazers went out on an impromptu hike. It was supposed to rain later in the day, but it was quite mild and we never got any rain. In fact, the skies started to clear, and we even saw some sunshine. Today is another matter, however; it's been raining on and off, and tomorrow it's supposed to really rain, as in buckets, while the wind is predicted to blow a gale. The only place I'll exercise will be at the Y to use the treadmill, if I even do that much.
Our Thanksgiving table (sans salmon)
We had a wonderful dinner, and although I had seconds, I didn't overdo it. The salmon was just coming out of the oven when I took this picture so we could sit down and eat. Okay, the salmon's done. Here's a closeup of our magnificent meal.
Salmon, squash casserole, salad, wine
Today (Saturday), we finished up the last of our leftovers and Smart Guy is in the kitchen preparing our week's worth of steamed veggies. (We just had a minor interruption in our day, so I'll just sign off here, and look forward to writing more later, like on Tuesday.)
:-)

  3. Delightful meal; not-so-delightful weather. Be sure to put some lead in your boots if you go out, so you don't blow away. It's been up to about about freezing today, but over the next couple of weeks, our highs will be around -20C (or -4F). But then, it's December so this is about what we should expect.

    Blessings and Bear hugs!

  7. Your dinner looks delicious. I haven't made a squash casserole in a long time but seeing yours I think I might add it to this week's menu.

I am ready for the winter blast, we've already had some cold. My double-face sheepskin boots are ready and the gloves and scarves are in the closet. It's going to be like being in AK again...well almost.

  10. Never an outdoorsy person here in Minnesota weather we're giving it and even less so now in our golden years were giving it up, battening down the hatches.... and heading off to Florida in Jan...:)

  11. What a wonderful meal. I eat salmon once a week, but rarely do I fix a salad. That will change when I add lettuce and tomatoes to my grocery list this week.

  12. Looks like a great meal to me - fish is so good for you and I love squash and a fresh salad. Now, I have a question DJan - you used the phrase "cooking up a weeks worth the vegetables" - kinda neat - never thought of that - good idea - we are receiving some snow here today - YAHOO :)

  13. Yippee!
I know now what I didn't know two minutes ago: for the next 6-10 days we will be normal here.
It'll take some getting used to...

  14. Your Thanksgiving meal looks delicious... so much healthier than our traditional turkey one. But no one in our house will eat salmon but me. Think I will get some this week... :)

As for your *really cold* weather hike, just bundle up and be safe!

  16. Freezing temperatures are not something to look forward to, but that meal and glass of wine would be a definite spirit raiser for me.

  17. That looks yummy. Your salad makes me want to dig in and I absolutely love squash but seem to be the only one around here that does.

Stay warm and dry, DJan. And I hope your interruption was nothing serious.

  20. Dinner looks beautiful. If I'd eaten your choices, I think I would have felt a great deal better. Food comas and I don't agree.

Just finished reading Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I'm sure you have read it being an avid hiker. Cheers to you on the treadmill at the Y. I'll be behind you on the upright bike, jealous of your feet.

Stay warm. Here, yesterday, it was in the mid 70s. Tho we did have a cold snap last week in the mid 30s for lows. BRRRR.
