Noooo!

Al took this picture, me with my missing camera
I just returned home after attending a wonderful end-of-summer party at Jonelle's home, celebrating the end of a super hiking season. Eleven of us Trailblazers showed up at her house to show each other what we have found to be the oldest items in our closets, as directed by Jonelle. I took lots of pictures, and got home to download them, and guess what? No camera. I left it at her house, so now I'm reduced to finding a poor substitute. Al just sent me this picture, with me showing my captures to Ward, Peggy, Jonelle, Rita, and Udo. Sigh. The story of our party will have to wait for another time. What else has happened in my life lately?

Well, I saw a really good movie last week, and I enjoyed it more than I expected I would: The Butler, starring Forest Whitaker as a black butler who was in the White House during several administrations. It was really well done, with cameo spots by people like Robin Williams playing Eisenhower, Oprah Winfrey playing the butler's wife, and many, many more interesting performances. It was very entertaining, and I enjoyed it immensely. I would see it again in a minute.

This week I also finished a very interesting book. I was at the bookstore when I saw it on the shelf, never having heard of it before, and I toyed with buying it. I loved the title: The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared. I had a sudden thought, was it available at the library? I looked on line and found that it was indeed at my local library, drove there and picked it up instead of buying it. I enjoyed it, too, although it wasn't exactly the kind of book I would read again. The protagonist lived a very interesting Forrest-Gump kind of existence in his early days, and I had quite a few good laughs thinking about his life.

The author of this book is Jonas Jonasson, who lives in Sweden and is now in the process of making the book into a movie. If it comes to this country, I will definitely see it, finding that many Swedish movies I've seen have been very interesting. I loved all the Dragon Tattoo movies, just so you'll know my taste in Swedish movies, which is not to everyone's liking.

Well, that's about all I can come up with, since those wonderful pictures of our fun party are languishing inside my camera, which is sitting on Jonelle's coffee table, she tells me. One day you will get to see us in some amazing costumes, but not today.
:-)

  1. Doggone it! We were going to see The Butler today because so many bloggers have been posting about how much they loved it. Double doggone it! We've been so busy. Maybe Friday... Sigh...

I love your first photo. It may be out of focus, but it gives it a magical look which I love.

  2. Kay, I changed the picture you commented on, since Al just now sent me this one. I am still mad at myself for walking out without my camera! :-)

  3. Oh I know the feeling of walking away from your camera. I did that the last time I was up at the new place. I picked up Frank's camera and brought that home with me instead. The camera bodies are identical but I left behind the standard lens that I like to use for most portraits and landscapes. I do finally have it back now. I hope it won't be too long before you are reunited with yours.

I read The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared a few months ago. It was available on my e-reader and the name intrigued me so I downloaded it. I enjoyed it immensely. Shortly after that, I found another intriguing title which I also enjoyed and recommend - The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce. You might like that one, also.

  5. If the engrossed expressions are a clue (and I am sure they are) those photos are going to be well worth the wait.

I will keep my eye out for The 100-Year-Old Man who Climbed out a Window (and thought of a 100 year-old-woman who WILL jump from a plane) and am adding another vote for The Unlikely Pilgrimmage. I really, really liked it.

  10. I love that photo of you in your hat and jacket. Very cute!
I want to see that movie too. Don't know if we'll get to the theater to see it or will have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

  11. You must feel naked without your camera! I read that same book about the 100yr old man a few months ago and enjoyed it very much as it was a little different from the norm.

  12. Ooh DJan, leaving things behind - I left my spare battery charging in the charger at my friends cottage and did not realize till I got all the way back home - YIKES - for the camera and charged batteries go everywhere with me, incl iPhone....- its like leaving home with one shoe - for me anyway. I did get it back the next week as someone was coming to St. Andrews and we met them on the highway.
My niece saw The Butler and loved it. I have not seen it yet. Dragon Tattoo - loved them. "100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out The Window and Disappeared - I shall check that out in Kindle Library and our own Library of course.
You look too cute in your suit - will be anticipating that post once you get your camera. Have a wonderful day :)

  13. The Butler is waiting in my queue at Netflix to be dropped. My nearest theater is a 3 hour round trip ride over mountain roads. It is on my must see list but I will have to wait.
That book sounds like something I would like and I will check my library. Thanks.

  14. Too bad you forgot your camera, DJan. I would have loved to see those photos. Interesting movie and book.

  15. I won't go to see The Butler, what Jane Fonda did to our soldiers in Vietnam should never be forgotten...just my opinion. Perhaps that is old school...but I have strong feelings about it. We never go to movies anyway.
I bet you are lonely without your camera:)

  20. You guys know how to have fun at a party. You left one thing out that I'm most interested in knowing. What was the oldest thing in your closet?

  21. I love the shot of you all - and look forward to seeing more when your camera returns!

I have not seen any of the Dragon Tattoo movies, but thought the books were excellent. Not my usual reading style, and not to everyone's liking, but I really gobbled them up & found the background of the author deeply fascinating.

I have made a book list that I've posted up on a clipboard - since whenever I get good book recommendations, I file them to memory or note, and lose them!
I'll add this one to the list.
I just added Uncle Tom's Cabin earlier today - one that has slipped through the cracks for me somehow & I've never read yet.

  22. Ditto on your take of the movie...
And I couldn't stop giggling when Jane Fonda appeared as Nancy Reagan. What a combination. :)

  23. Sorry you forgot you camera, but I can wait. ;) I had The Butler in my Netflix queue already and it sounds really good. The book also sounds really good. I loved the Swedish version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo! Was dark and gritty and I loved it. I'm going to have to see if our library has that book. Thanks! :)

  24. Can't wait to hear about the party...LOVE your outfit, by the way!

You need to move to NC and be my movie buddy - I am desperate to see The Butler but have not yet been able to coerce anyone to go with me. I may just have to go alone!

That book sounds interesting - I am adding it to my list!

  25. Book sounds great; movie sounds so-so (not based on your review but the various ones I've read or heard). I thought perhaps you were attending an early costume party when I saw the photo. Ha!

Our weather is changing. It's definitely Fall. Thank God. Summer was either super wet or super sticky & buggy. This is the best time of year.
