Cindy, the leader of our Fairhaven walking group, hosts a Fourth of July potluck at her house, preceded with an hour-long walk before settling in to eat the wonderful food that everyone brings. Nineteen of us showed up today, gathering at 8:30am (later than our usual 8:00 meeting) and a trifle more dressed up than usual.

Cindy's deck with three tables |
Although it wasn't terribly warm compared to the temperatures of the past few days, we headed out for a nice walk from Cindy's front door and covered more than three miles before coming back to enjoy a fantastic brunch, including three fruit salads, an incredible salmon strata (Cindy's specialty), and tons more food.

Waiting for the others to catch up |
We stopped a few times, allowing the slower walkers to catch up when we came to a fork in the trail. But we did walk at an almost four-mile-an-hour pace before we made it back to Cindy's. Once we got back, however, we enjoyed food, conversation, and coffee that just kept on going for almost two hours.

It was a wonderful gathering, my first Independence Day with Cindy and the walkers, but not my last. Then Smart Guy and I hooked up so we could go and see a movie together. Since it was the last day to be shown at our independent theater, the Limelight, we went to see
Love is All You Need, a Danish movie with Pierce Brosnan in it (some English, but with mostly Danish subtitles). It was billed as a "romantic comedy," but totally different from one you would see made in this country. I enjoyed it thoroughly, although I cried more than I laughed.
And now I am sitting here at five in the evening on the Fourth, listening to the first of many firecrackers that I will be enduring tonight. And tomorrow night, and probably until Sunday when it all finishes. It's been a wonderful Independence Day so far, and more to come...
:-)
Sounds like a busy, rewarding 4th - especially the potluck!
ReplyDeleteI'm hearing firecrackers in the distance, too, Jan.
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you had a lovely 4th of July.
Sending you hugs,
Jackie
Four miles per hour amazes me. And I think your traditions with your various exercise groups are nice ones.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful day you had, DJan! I just love your photos.
ReplyDeletesounds like another great group you hang with! :)
ReplyDeletefood conversation coffee and friends....what better kinda day could you have had? smiles...
ReplyDeletewe just got back from the fireworks...and still hear some going off in the distance...
Small world. My daughter attended a wedding near Bellingham and was in Fairhaven and went to the market.
ReplyDeleteI hope you had a great fourth of July.
Happy 4th! Getting dark here now and the firecrackers are popping down on the lake. Sounds like you had a great day, even if it was a little out of your normal routine:)
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a wonderful, wonderful day. Exercise, good friends, good food AND a movie with smart guy.
ReplyDeleteI notice in the first photo that you are all colour co-ordinated. With one notable exception. Ever the rebel?
Hsppy July 4th to you, Djan!
ReplyDeleteHappy 4TH of July!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like you had a great day with friends, food and a movie.
The fireworks are in the background here too but none close enough to scare the kitties.
The pot luck dinner looks really great. A nice walk, a great group and lots of wonderful food. I have only done 2 miles this morning as humidex is way too high for little Jack. I shall catch up during the day. I love the deck and have a nice weekend DJan :)
ReplyDeleteYour day sounds perfect. You look like you really had a good time. Nice pictures of you and your friends.
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect and balanced day. Looks like you are the runt of the group. I can relate.
ReplyDeleteFour miles per hour is a good clip. I would have been one of those you would have waited on.
Love the fact that you can just step out of your front door into such beautiful scenic walking paths. I am very jealous.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun day with the walkers. Surprised this is the first 4th of July potluck you've attended. Won't be the last, I'm sure. ;)
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting movie. I have it saved on Netflix now. Hope it was a good evening. :)
Happy post 4th and beyond Djan!
ReplyDeleteGlad you had such a great 4th! It's definitely a holiday to be spent with great friends.
ReplyDeleteHi DJan, Looks like you had a great 4th. Hope the fireworks were not too bad. Down here, the pretty ones were nice, but as you can imagine, there are a few clueless folks that set off ones that sound like a stick of dynamite. Those things kept up till about 3 am so not much sleep for the weary. Ha ha. Thanks for stopping by my blog and your kind comments. John
ReplyDeleteThat looks and sounds sooo fun. Love the camaraderie of exercise, food and friendship on a holiday. I always think everyone is with their families but now, with my sons living in AU, I realize it isn't all family style as you get older.
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated 4th Jan.
I am always impressed with how strong and fit you look in the pictures. It sounds like a wonderful way to celebrate the Fourth of July, with friends, a short walk, food and visiting. Then time for you and Smart Guy on a movie date.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun day all around...:)
ReplyDeleteYou really belong to a healthy, fun group of friends. How great to work up an appetite before a celebratory meal.
ReplyDeleteAm I ever far behind!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fine way to spend the day with friends. Did you all select shades of pink intentionally?
