My little hummer

Yesterday I caught this little guy drinking the nectar from my planter flowers. (You can click to enlarge to see his pretty little backside.) Last year I put out a hummingbird feeder, but I found that the hummingbirds much preferred my flowers, so I planted these to capture their interest. This is the first one I've seen here this season, because the first flowers have just bloomed.

Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback about your dealings with the wild creatures that inhabit your back yards and sometimes your gardens. I feel much more serene and better able to handle the ups and downs of my front porch critters. I would much rather have them around than not; they are very engaging and, yes, I can even appreciate the House Sparrows now and then.
This is an excellent year for goldfinches. I saw this purple finch alight on the thistle sock with them. The male goldfinch at the top is looking at the other finch as if to say, "hey, this is my territory!" The male goldfinches have that black mark on their heads, and the females are not as brightly colored. The one in the middle right is a female. But they are all so pretty!

And just as I was writing this post, the hummingbird came over to my flower pot, so I crept outside hoping I might be able to get a good shot in the low light. As I was adjusting my camera, the hummer flew right up to my face, mere inches away, as if to take a good look at me! It was thrilling. But I was unable to get another good picture, so these will have to do for now.

  1. That's actually a great shot of the hummingbird! I really do keep meaning to hang a hummingbird feeder up. It brings back great memories. I can easily picture my dad and I making sugar water for the birds and him grabbing my arm as I would walk by so that he could point out the hummingbirds to me. That makes me smile; thanks for this:)

  2. What perfect timing on capturing the Hummingbird !
We had them earlier in the Spring, but sadly they seem to have dwindled off again this year.
Love the Goldfinches, they are such a sweet looking little bird.
Lovely post, thank you for sharing !

  4. We hung a basket of petunias in front of the family room window where we also have the bird feeders. As the petunias come into bloom, the humming birds are coming as if to a feeder. We've always had better luck with flowers than with feeders for the hummers. I do love the goldfinches. We get them only rarely here in suburbia.

  5. I like your birds as much as mine. In fact your variety is better than mine. I seldom see the hummer here. But they are around. I guess eating somewhere else.

  7. I say, we all say, Thanks for the comments.

And, if you tell me what it is you want to do I will tell you how I do it. I am not sure. So explain by looking at one of mine and tell me which part (a couple of words) you want to add.

  8. Great shot of the hummingbird. I haven't seen any here. Do you have them all out there in the Pacific Northwest? Send some out here.

  10. Wonderful photos. I can't explain why it is such a magical experience to watch the birds go about their daily life, but I love it too. One day I hope to have a hummer land on my hand.

  12. I love my hummers. I put out four feeders for them because deer will eat flowers. I can watch the hummers from various rooms in the house. It is a really spiritual feeling when they hover around my head. I like to think I am contributing something to wildlife by feeding them.

  15. What luck to catch a hummer on "film"! Even more to have it on your own porch!!! :o)

Reminds me of once in school in Mexico when a hummingbird was "stuck" in the entrance hall ot our school which was just all huge windows... I remember staring at it for a long time. I don't know how they ended up helping the poor little critter out...

  16. Just won't keep still, will they, those little critters. You keep feeding them and they'll keep rewarding you with their presence.

  17. Great shot of the hummer, they are one of my favorites each summer. Like you I don't put out feeders for the hummingbirds as they seem very happy with my flowers.
