June market

This morning the sun is shining, which is very helpful in improving my mood. The blue skies with fluffy white clouds caused me to join the Fairhaven walkers' group early this morning for a nice four-mile jaunt along Bellingham Bay. Kids and parents were out on bikes, lots of walkers and runners all wearing smiles and summer clothes (with a jacket, since it was only in the fifties).

I headed over to the Farmers' Market at 10:00 when it opened so that I could grab some good organic kale. It is sold out within an hour at almost every stand, it is so good. I saw the gorgeous flowers shown in the above picture with amazing calla lilies and lupine and columbines and could not resist: I bought a bouquet, took it home and made two flower arrangements with it.
I spied this stunning young woman at work and asked if I could take her picture, and she readily agreed. The sun on her hair, the rose, and the heart tattoo all combined to make her simply the picture of summer. You would think it was warm, given her clothing, but right now at 1:00 pm in the afternoon, Bellingham is only 64 degrees -- not exactly sweltering -- with a light breeze.
This lady has a booth that offers face painting for children and their friends, and she attracts the kids (and even some older kids like me) by blowing bubbles with her bubble machine all day long every Saturday. For the last few weeks in Boulder, where I used to live, people have been experiencing a heat wave, with temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s, and it reminds me how nice it is to put on a light jacket in June and head down to the market.  As I get older, I find that given the choice between too hot or too cold, I'll choose the cooler option every time. How's the weather in your part of the world?
:-)

  1. I envy your cool temps. We are melting here. Your flowers are so pretty. I wish we had a farmer's market that sold such nice things.

  3. I guess the kid in me is attracted to bubbles, I would be over at her booth by following the source of the bubbles. Ha. Glad you had such a great day.

  5. Your cooler weather seems very appealing to me. At my age it's getting harder to take the heat and humidity. I just wish it wasn't so far from family...or I'd move out there in a heart beat. Your flower photo is outstanding. This are my favorite color combination in the garden. Have a lovely weekend. xa

  6. I am on your coast right now. The weather is so nice here (Long Beach), in the 70s, while it is in the mid 90s in Georgia. We have been gone every day so it’s hard to get close to a computer (I’ll do a post when I get back.) I read your post on Tom Lehrer who I do not know but my husband said that there may be a record of his in our house as he used to listen to him in college. Congratulation on winning the landscape category – your entry is truly excellent. As for squirrels, they constantly come to eat anything on our bird feeders. When I open our glass door in the den, it makes such a noise, that they run away, but they then wait a couple of minutes and they come back.
The 17th of June was our 43rd anniversary and our daughter took us to the Botanic Garden on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. There were so many flowers and plants of all sorts. We walked up and down hills and my knees are still sore; I wish I could walk like you do and without pain. Tomorrow, for father’s day we’ll go to the local farmer’s market then to a Japanese garden in the afternoon. I already took 440 pictures, of the botanic garden alone…

  7. I prefer summer weather when I don't need to wear a sweater or jacket. Temps in Hawaii range from 70s to 80s during the summer, and from 50s to 70s during the winter. I love sunshine and blue skies!

  8. looks like a great farmers market. i visit ours every week, but i haven't met a face painter yet. that gives me an idea for a little money making prospect this summer...

kale is awesome baked with a little olive oil and s&p in the oven. it gets crispy almost like a chip. have you tried it that way?

  10. Beautiful flowers! It is cool here today. Nice, as I continue to deal with moving issues. I had to close the doors and windows at one point as it was too cool. I have to wonder - is summer ever coming to Northern Nevada?

  15. Hot! It's been really hot and humid here lately; even sitting motionless in the shade causes me to break into a sweat. Jordan keeps wanting to go outside, and I keep telling her we've got to wait until later in the day.

Jordan had her face painted for the first time this weekend and proceeded to walk up to everyone and show them (she didn't care if she knew them or not). We also love bubbles!

  16. Your side of the Cascades looks great compared to our weekend. It has been overcast and in the sixties with on and off rain showers. More of the same is forecast for tomorrow but the rest of the week looks nice.

I didn't see too many folks without jackets at our Farmers' market this weekend but the veggies looked delicious.

  18. Our market has someone that pedals a bike to blend the smoothies. Kind of cool. And we even had a juggler. Oh, and vegtables.
