The raspberry thief

Rob's sign in the garden
A couple of days ago, when our raspberries first began to ripen, my garden neighbor Rob (who gave me a bunch of raspberry branches earlier this year) found that someone had gone around and snatched his raspberries and managed to break off several main branches. Since I have my own berries, thanks to Rob, it wasn't me.
My raspberry patch
That said, I may have been partly responsible for some of his by the gate being gone. However, a man was spied with a glass that he was busy filling up with raspberries outside the fence, where the breakage occurred. Rob, upset, put up signs but when I spoke to him just now, he said he's going to take them down. It bothered him last night that he was making such a big deal over it, and it's just raspberries, after all. But he's not even had a chance to taste them yet, and many of them are already gone.

My garden is beginning to be harvested for kale and soon, broccoli. I know I would be very upset if someone were to come in and take MY garden stuff! Take a look at my broccoli, which won't be harvested for at least another week or so.
Pretty broccoli florets
I remember last year being surprised that once I harvested the florets, I kept getting new ones. This year I am planting something called "late broccoli" so that maybe we will be able to have it all year round! Well, that's the garden news from my little corner of the world.

  1. Well, I hope the person who took the raspberries was so very hungry that he couldn't help himself. Otherwise, he's a thief! Yes, this is a little thing, but still - who would do that? I'm protective of my gardens and sometimes have to say something to people who let their dogs run loose to play havoc on my plants. I love dogs, but I also work hard in the gardens and don't want the plants broken. Of course, when the moose or fox travel through, I hold my breath and hope everything isn't stomped! Your broccoli looks great.

  2. How rude of the thief, I'm sure if he would have asked Rob would have shared some with him.
Your broccoli looks healthy, let's hope it grows to be harvested and enjoyed by the gardener :)

  3. That would have steamed me too! It's not only stealing but vandalism as this person damaged the plants.

  4. I would be upset about the raspberries too but I understand Rob's take on it as well.

Your broccoli looks great. Mine may be ready by mid August. Gardening of any kind is a great hobby but gardening for food is wonderful. Knowing exactly what went into the food production is my favourite part as well as the taste.

  5. Our raspberries are behind shrubbery so they are safe, but I'm keeping an eye on the strawberries by the curb.

  7. Taking one or two is perhaps understandable. Filling a glass? Hiss and spit.

  8. People who sneak garden produce have to be pretty low. They think it's just a few berries. why don't they go and raise their own?

  9. Raspberries! My favorite fruit! So expensive in the stores, especially the organic ones. What a treat to be able to grow them. So sad about Rob's being taken.

  10. It takes a lot of time and a lot of work to grow a garden. There is a sense of loss when someone robs you of the pleasure of your own crop.

  11. Could be birds too...they are hard on plants...chance likes them for a snack too! Our wild ones are loaded so maybe we will have a good crop if the skeeters don't eat us up! :)

  13. Oh no... garden thieves? How aggravating! Over here, it's mango season and mango thieves abound. Yay for the never ending broccoli!

  16. It's one thing to have critters stealing food from a garden--one can fully understand that. But to have a thieving human being--well, that's awful. I can't blame Rob for being upset--but after he calmed down he removed the signs. I'm so glad. Sadly--carrying around all that frustration and anger only hurts the carrier. The thief probably feels no guilt at all. But I truly do believe they will get theirs in the end because what you put out to the universe comes back to you--and so I'm glad that Rob took down the signs. Good for him!

Your broccoli looks great! That would be so cool to have it growing almost year round. Sounds like you might even be able to share a few raspberries with Rob this year. ;)

  17. We have a raspberry patch on our property,(actually we have several) but it's behind our neighbors garage. Last year, her handy man accidentally cut down the whole patch. Down to the nubs. Needless to say, the unhandy man still gets a wee bit of stink eye. But, we'll still have plenty of raspberries.

  18. Here in Hawaii, there are thieves who chop down other people's papaya trees. Some people are just plain mean.

  19. Amazing that people just think they can take what they like. I can understand Rob's anger.

  21. I think Rob was right to put up those signs! Nobody has the right to just help themselves unless they have been told to do so. Your broccoli looks magnificent!
