We got a little rain

The sunrise yesterday morning
We were all excited around here yesterday, when we finally got a forecast of rain. After so many days (weeks, months) of dry weather, nobody minded much. When I opened the front door, right at sunrise, I saw the above scene. Although the sky was cloudy, there was a small opening between the clouds, and within a minute or two after this picture was taken, it was dark again. This was one of the first pictures I've taken with my camera lately, because I needed to use the zoom and my cellphone was not going to capture this. Maybe I should carry the camera around with me; who knows when another wonderful shot like this one might be missed?

Anyway, we only received a bit more than a tenth of an inch of rain here in Bellingham, although it was cloudy all day and spit some rain now and then. Only once all day did it really rain, and that was when I was getting ready to head out to the movies with my friend Judy. We saw Tangerine, an art type movie filmed completely on the iPhone5s. It has gotten great reviews and is billed as a comedy, but it's not. It's about the rather tragic lives of transgender women of color, pimps and prostitution. That is not to say I'm sorry I saw the movie, but it definitely left me feeling sad for these people I ended up liking and caring about. Afterwards, I read several articles on the internet about the dangerous and precarious lives of these women.

Today or tomorrow we'll go see Ricki and the Flash with Meryl Streep. Although the reviews are not good for this one, I suspect I'll leave the theater with a smile. After all, who can resist thinking of Meryl as a rock star guitarist? Her real-life daughter also stars in the movie. Now I'm off to the library to pick up some books I put on hold. They always seem to show up at the same time.

  1. When I left Texas eleven years ago I never dreamed I would ever say the words "we need rain" again. After all I was moving to Oregon! But I'm back to saying "we need rain."

  2. I love going to the movies with you. I have seen the promos for the Meryl movie.
We need rain here to the woods are getting dry...but that is typical August for us. We got an inch of rain the other day, enough to perk up the lawn so I will have to mow again:)

  6. LOVE that sunrise.
And hope you get some real rain soon. Less incontinent pigeon rain, more gentle soaking, healing magic.

  7. Stunning sunrise! So glad you you had your camera handy. Yeah, we only got a tiny sprinkle yesterday......this dry spell has gone on so long I'm beginning to forget what rain looks like.

  9. That was one breathtaking shot. So glad you caught it in its brief window.
Let us know about Ricki and the Flash. I heard her sing in A Prairie Home Companion and was quite surprised. She can sing. Is there anything she can't do? BTW, it is her real daughter playing her daughter in the movie. Both her daughters are actresses.

  11. Wonderful photo!
We got about an inch and a quarter of rain! I think it saved the lives of some local trees and shrubs.
I'll pass on Tangerine, but I do want to see the Meryl Streep movie.

  12. I don't ever remember even thinking that we needed rain round here. We seem to get an equal amount of each. Perhaps a dry spell now and then for a few weeks, but not much longer than that. I agree, I would love to see Meryl Streep in this film too. I absolutely cannot see anything but laughter and a smile. Kinda cool that her real life daughter is in this too. I must watch for it. Have a wonderful Day DJan and lovely capture outside your front door this morning. We have a heavy land mist which usually burns off by 9-10am, living by the bay n all.

  13. That shot of the sunrise is beautiful. I always carry my small Canon PowerShot camera in my purse and whip it out whenever I need to.

I rarely watch movies now. The last one I saw was Cinderella, which I really loved. I hate movies with too much noise and sound effects.

  14. Spectacular shot, the sky looks like it's on fire !
It's been awhile since I watched a movie at the theatre, much too loud for my taste, I end up putting an ear plug I one ear :)
It looks like a fun movie though....enjoy !

  16. Wow, filmed entirely on the iPhone? I'll have to see this just for that reason! Streep is great in everything.

  17. What a photo! Fire in the Sky I'd say... And if Meryl is in the movie at least one thing is very good about it....:)

  19. That is an amazing photo, Jan! Wow! Awesome! They say we're supposed to be hit by thunderstorms, but so far nothing. In fact, nothing for the past week. It's very dry over here. I love Meryl Streep too.

  20. I don't think my earlier comment went through, sorry if this is a repeat!
This is a spectacular sunrise moment! Really splendid capture.
We had temps in the 90's this last week and through the weekend. They always say of the midwest, "It's not the heat, it's the HUMIDITY." Very humid, heavy air in the 90's here in MN making it unpleasant. But this evening it's brisk and raining.. in the 50's. What a contrast!
I've made note to myself that *I need to see more movies.*
