| The sun from my front porch this morning |
When I woke and saw that it was still dark in the living room after the sun had come up, I took a look outside and this is what I saw: sunlight filtered through the smoke from the British Columbia forest fires. Our heatwave has broken early, because we are getting sunlight through thick haze, and the temperatures have dropped precipitously. Right now, at noon, it's only 65 degrees F (18 C), and although it's supposed to get almost to 80 today, I don't think it will.

This fascinating graphic is from a website I found this morning while looking for more information about the BC wildfires that are causing such a degradation in the air around here. It's called
Wildfire Today, and the guy behind it, Bill Gabbert, seems to be posting really interesting stuff daily about (you guessed it) wildfires. He's got plenty of them to choose from, unfortunately, but he must be scouring the web because he's got some great pictures and graphics. It doesn't look like it will get better around here until the end of the week when we've got a cool front headed our way.

And guess what? I finally saw a picture of my pal Gene, who is on his boat Hobo up in Alaska for his annual salmon catch. He left in early June. That's his crew with him. I sure will be glad when he's home; it's just not the same around the coffee shop without him.

We haven't got the smoke...yet. But we still have the hot temps. High is supposed to be in the 90s still today. Ugh - I'm so over this hot, dry weather!
ReplyDeleteI was so lucky to have been in BC a couple of weeks ago. The weather couldn't have been better. Hope you get some respite from all that smoke soon.
ReplyDeleteGood to see Gene on his boat! I can only imagine how good fresh salmon is! We are fee from the smokey conditions today so I weeded the flower bed and mowed and trimmed the yard....now I am going out to sit on the patio and watch some birds. They are advising people here to get masks. No fun and I hope the fires are out soon:)
ReplyDeleteThe fires are really worrisome, and I feel for those affected by them. Hopefully they will come to a speedy end. I looked at the pictures of Gene and I thought, what an interesting guy!

ReplyDeleteWe need a good front and some wind to move the smoke out. What we really need is a low to swing in with a few days of rain. We are very dry here.
ReplyDeleteWe're so accustomed to clean air, the smoke is especially bothersome.
ReplyDeleteTricky time of the year with winter just behind us and then no rain for a spell. All campfires, etc are banned in our province. One of our small mountains caught on fire from a lightening strike a few years ago and we had smoke around for a while, till the wind changed. Hope your air quality improves soon DJan and love the photo of Gene on his boat - we too have abundant fish in the Bay Of Fundy and just had some fresh salmon last nite from our fishin' buddies. ReplyDeleteThat's what they sky looked like here, too, with an orange ball of a sun. Our temps dropped, too. The last couple days it has suddenly felt almost like fall! 40s and 50s at night and low 70s in the daytime. But the heat is supposed to be returning in a day or two. Great pic of Gene! :)
ReplyDeleteThe fires have been so destructive. Hope you are staying inside. That smoke could be like smoking a pack of cigarettes. At least it is cooling your days off.

ReplyDeleteWhile I appreciate the relief from the heat, I don't like that it's coming from the destruction of forests, and that is is causing breathing difficulties for many people.
ReplyDeleteWe need some wind and some moisture to help clear the air.
We often get smoke from Mexico in the spring when the farmers burn the old crop. Not a fun, especially when doing outside activities. Hope BC gets some relief from their wildfires soon and you as well.

ReplyDeleteAhhh... your friend should be bringing home a lot of salmon from his trip. I hope the smoke drifts off quickly. Then again if that's what is keeping things cool for you... maybe not tooo horrible a thing.
