Three more fun skydives

Linny (with red circle), Christy, me, Tyson, Dave
That little lady with the red circle around her head has been missing in most of my skydives this summer. Last September she had a hard opening and injured her neck pretty severely (whiplash), and then in June she came out to make a couple of jumps, considering herself to be almost back to normal. She made two skydives, which didn't turn out so well, as she ended up with a busted lip and pain in the front of her chest. She then went to the doctor to find that something was sprained in there, and she's still trying to work out the problems.

This is one reason why I'm ready to hang up my gear at the end of the season: the older we get, the more likely it is that we can get injured. Christy and Tyson are both much younger than Linny and me (I'm five years older than she is), and Dave is somewhere in the middle. He's still working, so I suspect he's in his late fifties, but I haven't asked him for some reason. His wife Cindy stayed home on Sunday, so the five of us went up and made a skydive, came down and packed up and made one more! Christy, Dave and I had already made a three-way skydive before Linny arrived, and Tyson is actually the Drop Zone Owner, so he's always there. He made time to join us because of Linny.

Although it was a really good day in some ways, it was hard to see how fragile Linny is right now. Before the whiplash injury, she would make up to eight skydives on Saturday and then come out the next day and make eight more! I have always been content to make no more than four in one day, and that's with me paying someone to pack my parachute in between jumps. Last year I did make four jumps in one day and packed up each one myself, but I'm willing to be much more laid back now, in my final skydiving season. I intend to enjoy myself and not push too hard.

That said, as I'm approaching the end of the season, with only two more months to go, I am beginning to wonder if I am being premature in stopping now. I had so much fun on Sunday!

  1. I'd say go for as long as you feel you're capable of doing. Of course, as we age [and I'm talking from experience] it takes a longer time to heal than when in my 20s. That said, I still think that it's entirely up to you, but NOT if you have bad vibes.

  3. I am thrilled that you had such a good day - and that Linny could play as well.
Never say never. Jump when and if you want to.

i guess it is better to know when you time is, than to push it though...

  5. They say to quit while you are still ahead. You don't want to end up like your friend. On the other hand, you still like the fun and camaraderie, don't you.

  6. It's great that you had a fun day. Stay with your head about ending sky diving. As Gigi says, quit while you're ahead.

  7. I'm glad you had fun. I know you will find the balance point where concern overtakes joy. Only you will know.

  8. I think you will know when it is time without having to think about it too much.

  9. I do love the color of your jump suit. I think it's fabulous that you're still sky diving. You must have strong bones. I know I'd be in real trouble with my osteoporosis.

  10. If you actually retire from skydiving, I will believe it when I see it.

  11. I have always quit while I was ahead so I am a poor one to give advice. I always worried that the "just one more time", might leave me with lingering miseries.
I think you will know when the time is right for you. We are all different.

  12. You are a big girl and can decide for yourself. I would hate to see you injured...because at your age it is harder to heal. Just saying:)

  13. D'Jan, you continue to amaze me with your daring adventures. I'm happy that you had no injuries, and I'm sure that is somewhat because you know how to land and are in great shape. Take care, but don't miss those opportunities when they are there.

  14. Cutting back slowly and carefully is something I've been doing since I had to give up tennis in my late forties with a bad knee and later A-Fib. The key has been to replace with something new, fun and doable. Hunting with birding. Flyfishing with a fishing boat. etc. Go for it...:)

  15. Well, giving things a considered second thought is always a good plan. I hope you keep having fun, but I hope you don't get hurt.

    Blessings and Bear hugs.

  16. You already have alternative physical activities all in place. They're not the same as jumping into the sky, but I'd hate to see you say bang up a knee or a hip and not be able to do any of it. But then I am more cautious and hate heights in the first place--LOL! I just know being laid up would drive you absolutely bonkers! ;)

  17. You take such good care of yourself. You are much more physically fit than most people I know. As long as you have the physical and mental capacity to perform safely, you could choose to continue. A Linda said, you'll know when it's time to quit.
